New website: War on West Papua

From War Resisters International:

We are very excited to share news of a new website, called War on West Papua. The website identifies a wide-range of #weapons and #military equipment used by the #Indonesian security forces in their ongoing #occupation of #WestPapua.

If like me you may not have known anything about this occupation, the website provides valuable background on the situation, along with other information about those complicit in the occupation.

International military and police training and joint exercises contribute to a culture of impunity for the #occupying #forces in West Papua. #Soldiers and #police grow more confident that they will not be held accountable by the international community any more than they are in #Indonesia itself.

The accelerating rate of weapons sales to Indonesia, where the #defense budget has tripled in five years, is of grave concern to people in #Papua and many other Indonesian-controlled territories.

In the UK? They're trying to force militarism on little kids

If you're on Twitter you can join in the social media response:

On Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 June, members and allies of the Peace Pledge Union will tweet @Tesco to ask the company how they feel about small children handling weapons – and why they are sponsoring an event with so little concern for the welfare of children.

You can also protest in person: Day of action: resist militarism, resist Armed Forces Day!

Peace Pledge Union statement on Ukraine and Russia

UK Tanks

The #PeacePledgeUnion (PPU) has today issued the following statement with regards to the prospect of #war over #Ukraine. The #PPU is #Britain's leading #pacifist organisation and the #British section of War Resisters' International.

The Peace Pledge Union shares the concern felt around the world about the possibility of war between #Russia and Ukraine. Sending more #troops and more #weapons to the area is only making the situation worse.

We oppose the actions of #politicians and #military leaders on both the #Russian side and the #NATO/Ukrainian side who are stirring up military #tension and using each other’s #aggression to justify their own. We stand with people in all countries who are resisting the drive to war.

We utterly reject any suggestion that to oppose NATO’s #militarism means supporting #VladimirPutin and Russian #forces. We oppose militarism on all sides.

We condemn the action of the Russian #government in building up troops on the #Ukrainian border. We do not accept their claim that this is not aggressive because the troops are in Russian territory. We similarly condemn the aggressive actions of NATO members, including the #US and #UK governments, in building up troops on Russia’s other borders. This follows NATO’s expansion eastwards since the 1990s, which has broken promises made at the end of the #ColdWar.

Each side uses the other’s aggression to justify their own. Each side claims that their actions are purely defensive. This situation has occurred countless times before in many parts of the world. It illustrates the futility of seeking to solve #conflict through #violence. Militarism anywhere fuels militarism everywhere.

As the British section of War Resisters’ International, the Peace Pledge Union stands in #solidarity with #pacifists and other #anti-militarists around the world. We are confident that the people of #Ukraine, Russia, the US, the UK and all the other countries involved have more in common with each other than with the #militaristic politicians, generals and arms companies who would wage war in their name.

As an organisation based in the UK, we note that UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss repeatedly states that UK troops and their NATO allies are promoting “freedom”. Yet the lack of #democracy and civil #liberties in Russia is mirrored in countries that the UK government counts among its military allies. NATO members include the #authoritarian regime of #Turkey. While Truss claims that UK troops in #Estonia are defending #freedom, other UK troops are training the #Saudi forces bombing #civilians in #Yemen. The Ukrainian government has recently imprisoned members of our sibling organisation, the Ukrainian Pacifist Movement, for campaigning against militarism; these actions mirror the Putin regime’s repression of peaceful #activists in Russia.

There is no military solution to the #crisis over Ukraine. We urge both sides to withdraw troops from each other’s borders and to stop pouring further troops and weapons into an already highly volatile situation. We encourage them to focus on tackling the real dangers that threaten us all, including Covid, poverty and the climate emergency. We support people in all countries who challenge militaristic polices and we welcome the actions of individuals in the armed forces in any country who refuse to obey orders to fight or to prepare for war.

December 1st - A Day to Write To Prisoners!

Prisoners for Peace Day

December 1st is Prisoners for Peace Day. On this day (and every day) we encourage you to show #solidarity with the #activists and #ConscientiousObjectors imprisoned due to their #peace work and their refusal to take #arms and perform #military service.

This year we want to highlight and denounce how countries like #Singapore, the Republic of #Korea, #Eritrea and #Tajikistan continues to prosecute and imprison conscientious objectors.

Find a list of #prisoners for peace here, download the list here or below.

As we get closer to this day, what can you do?
We have been told repeatedly by people who have been sent messages of solidarity while in #prison, either via #letters or solidarity actions, that the moral support of like-minded people has been invaluable. Your solidarity is crucial to remind the #imprisoned refusers and peace activists that they are not alone and that we are aware of the significance of their #resistance. On this day,

  • Join many others from across the world and write to those imprisoned for their peace work and conscientious objection.
  • Encourage your friends, peace group, student, faith or community group to organise a card-writing session (online, or if the Covid-19 regulations allow, physical).
  • Help us spread the word on social media. Use the hashtag #PfPday21 and post your messages of solidarity with prisoners for peace on social media, and invite others to write to those in #jail.

If you have details of other prisoners for peace not yet listed, please write to info@wri-irg.org.

For anyone who has fooled themselves into believing that the #Biden administration cares about minorities (or anyone), just check out this information from Peace Action:

Peace Action

Two weeks ago the Biden administration notified #Congress of a $650 million #arms sale to #SaudiArabia. This sale comes on top of a $500 million arms deal back in October. That’s over a BILLION dollars in #weapons to a country actively waging a brutal #war and naval #blockade in #Yemen leading to the planet’s greatest #humanitarian #crisis.

In his presidency’s first speech on #ForeignPolicy, Biden announced that the U.S. would end all support for Saudi Arabia’s “offensive” operations in Yemen. Yet these arms sales fly directly in the face of that...

The Biden administration's latest sale would give Saudi Arabia 280 advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles, along with 596 missile launchers, support equipment, spare parts, U.S. #government and contractor engineering, and technical support. You’ll not be surprised to hear that the principal contractor for the sale is #NorthrupGrumman, one of the largest arms manufacturers in the U.S. #MilitaryIndustrialComplex. Rather than brokering an end to the humanitarian #catastrophe in Yemen, Biden is choosing to further line the pockets of war merchants. It truly is #unconscionable.

The situation in Yemen is beyond dire.

  • An estimated 11 million children there are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
  • Nearly 2 million children are acutely malnourished, and the United Nations forecasts that more than 400,000 Yemeni children under the age of 5 could die of #malnutrition by the end of 2021 alone.
  • Almost 10 million Yemenis are considered "one step away from #famine."
With only half of the country's medical facilities fully functioning, almost 20 million people lack access to adequate #healthcare.
  • Almost 18 million do not have enough clean #water or access to adequate sanitation.
  • Yemen’s fishermen fear being blown out of the water by Saudi-led coalition helicopters. Yet a greater fear keeps sending them back to the water -- #hunger.

If you missed the Peace Pledge Union's National Alternative Remembrance Ceremony today, you can still watch here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_pzI_TX954

#WhitePoppies are worn in the run-up to #RemembranceDay every year by thousands of people in the #UK and beyond. They have been worn in this way for over eighty years.
The #WhitePoppy stands for three things. They represent #remembrance for all #victims of #war, a commitment to #peace and a challenge to attempts to glamorise or celebrate war.

You can buy white poppies through our online shop here. You can also find them in a number of shops, cafes and other outlets across the UK.

White poppies are at the heart of our National Alternative Remembrance Ceremony every year. On our events page you can find out about this and other alternative remembrance ceremonies around the country. You can watch and read about our 2020 ceremony here.

Remembering all victims of war
White poppies stand for remembrance of all victims of all wars. This includes #wars still being fought. It includes people of all nationalities. It includes both #civilians and members of armed forces.
In wearing white poppies, we remember all those killed in war, all those wounded in body or mind, the millions who have been made sick or homeless by war and the families and communities torn apart. We also remember those killed or imprisoned for refusing to fight and for #resisting war.

Today over 90% of people killed in #warfare are civilians.

We differ from the Royal British Legion, who produce red poppies. The Legion has traditionally said that red poppies are to remember only British armed forces and those who fought alongside them. In 2019 they shifted their position to say that they "acknowledge" civilian victims of war, but did not extend their remembrance to all nationalities.

A recent poll shows that 83% of UK adults believe victims of war of all nationalities should be included in remembrance, whilst 86% believe civilians should be included.

We want to remember #British #military dead, but they are not the only victims of war. We also remember the many civilians who have died or suffered in war, both in the past and today, in Syria, Yemen and many other places around the world. #Suffering does not stop at national borders, and nor should remembrance.

Militarism and the police: how our streets became battlefields

When faced with #conflict, human beings respond in various ways and often choose #solutions that avoid #violence. We are very good at #negotiating, #communicating, #cooperating, as well as, of course, submitting to those more #powerful than us. Violence in our societies is pervasive; it is experienced every day by victims of #crime, domestic and more. But the systemic way #armies and #militarized #police units plan and prepare for the use of overwhelming violence is specific and unique.

A key example of militarized #policing is the #suppression of #protest and #dissent. Social movements come into conflict with the #authorities via lobbying, #protests or direct actions. Authorities respond to these #conflicts in various ways, sometimes reaching for militarized options. This violence is planned, trained for, repeatedly rehearsed and often delivered in a calculated way that aims to disorientate, overwhelm or eliminate the perceived enemy or threat.

Through the lens of #militarism, conflict stops being something that drives #change and #transformation; it becomes a #threat to be neutralized and the individuals and groups driving conflict become enemies akin to a foreign invading #army. Violence of this nature relies on its perpetrators’ #obedience to orders, the #dehumanization of its victims, and a heightened perception of threat.

The experiences of the democracy movement in #HongKong serve as one particularly extreme example. While in Hong Kong these tactics have been deployed by an #authoritarian #government, we have seen similar examples of police violence leveled against #activists across the world — in Chile, France, Germany, Indonesia, Myanmar, South Africa, South Korea and the US, to name but a few.

Don’t Wage Economic War on Afghanistan

#Sanctions advocates from the hardline Foundation for Defense of Democracies recently made the case for piling on sanctions on #Afghanistan by adding the #Taliban to both the FTO list and the list of state sponsors of terrorism. Hawks have been disastrously wrong about the use of sanctions for decades, and now they propose to strangle a country that has been wracked by #war for the last four decades. The last thing that Afghanistan needs after generations of armed #conflict is a new #US #economic war.

These calls for designating the Taliban would have a few practical effects, all of them bad: it would impede the delivery of #aid and the conduct of #trade with the rest of the world, it would deprive the #Afghan #people of being able to import goods from elsewhere, it would worsen the #refugee #crisis, and it would give Taliban every incentive to cooperate with and support #hostile groups.

Report: US Navy Might Continue Air War in Afghanistan

The last known #US #airstrike in #Afghanistan was in #Kabul on August 29th, which was carried out by a #drone from outside the country, or “over the horizon.” The US claims the strike targeted ISIS-K, but witnesses on the ground said it killed 10 civilians, and the #Pentagon has not disputed the account.

New Publication: Conscientious Objection in Turkey

Conscientious Objection in Turkey

#War Resisters' International, together with Connection e.V. and Union Pacifiste de France, released a new publication, #ConscientiousObjection in #Turkey.

The booklet, published in English, Turkish, French and German, includes articles on the situation of #ConscientiousObjectors (COs) in Turkey, the #history of conscientious objection movement in the country, as well as the experiences of COs from Turkey who sought asylum in other countries.

You can download its English edition here.

Call for actions in solidarity with Ukrainian pacifist Ruslan Kotsaba

#Ukrainian conscientious objector and journalist #RuslanKotsaba will be on trial again on September 20th. Support #Kotsaba with your actions ahead of his trial!

Kotsaba, president of the #Ukrainian #Pacifist Movement, is accused of treason and obstructing #military operations for his expressions calling for #peace in a video he posted in 2015. In the video, Kotsaba was calling to boycott military mobilisation for the #conflict in Eastern #Ukraine.

Kotsaba had already spent 524 days under #arrest for his expressions opposing the #war and was duly acquitted in 2016. His retrial is a clearly politically motivated #persecution which must end immediately. Furthermore he was attacked by neo-Nazis several times and seriously wounded. For background and more information on Ruslan’s case, see here.

War Resisters’ International ( #WRI ), European Bureau for Conscientious Objection ( #EBCO ) and Connection e.V. are calling for #international actions ahead of Kotsaba’s next hearing, scheduled to take place on September 20th.

What can you do?
- Write to the #Prosecutor General of Ukraine demanding an end to his #prosecution. You can use our template letter which can be reached here.
- Organize a #vigil in front of an Ukrainian #embassy or #consulate in your country. You can find the list of Ukrainian embassies here.
- Ask #politicians in your country to support Ruslan Kotsaba by sending a letter to the Ukrainian authorities and/or the Prosecutor General.

Please contact us about your activities via actionruslankotsaba@Connection-eV.org.

WRI, EBCO and Connection e.V. are standing in #solidarity with Ruslan Kotsaba. We urge the Ukrainian #government to end his prosecution and to ensure that all #pacifists, in Ukraine, including the #activists of Ukrainian Pacifist Movement, are able to freely express their opinions and continue their non-violent activity. We also urge the Ukrainian government to safeguard the right to #ConscientiousObjection to military service, according to the European and international standards.

Has anyone seen this documentary about drone warfare called National Bird?

National Bird follows the dramatic journey of three #whistleblowers who are determined to break the silence around one of the most #controversial current affairs issues of our time: the #secret U.S. #drone #war. At the center of the film are three U.S. #military #veterans. Plagued by guilt over participating in the killing of faceless people in foreign countries, they decide to speak out publicly, despite the possible consequences.

Their stories take dramatic turns, leading one of the protagonists to #Afghanistan where she learns about a horrendous incident. But her journey also gives hope for #peace and #redemption. #NationalBird gives rare insight into the #US drone program through the eyes of veterans and #survivors, connecting their stories as never seen before in a #documentary. Its images haunt the audience and bring a faraway issue close to home.
