For years, Australia has called on the U.S. to drop its prosecution against Assange, an Australian citizen who has fought U.S. extradition efforts from #prison in the U.K. Asked about the request on Wednesday, as he hosted Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for an official visit, Biden said, “We’re considering it.”

Hopefully he won't think about it until he forgets it again or is no longer President. 😒

The discouraging bit is that the comments appear to be more extracted through political pressure than voiced with enthusiasm. But we'll take what we can get for now.

Call for actions in solidarity with Ukrainian pacifist Ruslan Kotsaba

#Ukrainian conscientious objector and journalist #RuslanKotsaba will be on trial again on September 20th. Support #Kotsaba with your actions ahead of his trial!

Kotsaba, president of the #Ukrainian #Pacifist Movement, is accused of treason and obstructing #military operations for his expressions calling for #peace in a video he posted in 2015. In the video, Kotsaba was calling to boycott military mobilisation for the #conflict in Eastern #Ukraine.

Kotsaba had already spent 524 days under #arrest for his expressions opposing the #war and was duly acquitted in 2016. His retrial is a clearly politically motivated #persecution which must end immediately. Furthermore he was attacked by neo-Nazis several times and seriously wounded. For background and more information on Ruslan’s case, see here.

War Resisters’ International ( #WRI ), European Bureau for Conscientious Objection ( #EBCO ) and Connection e.V. are calling for #international actions ahead of Kotsaba’s next hearing, scheduled to take place on September 20th.

Around 120 #politicians, #journalists and #artists appealed to #ChancellorAngelaMerkel yesterday in a letter asking her to raise the ongoing #prosecution of #JulianAssange with #US #PresidentJoeBiden in her upcoming trip to Washington.

They ask the Chancellor for her assistance in ensuring that "Assange does not have to remain in detention" and to make clear in their discussions "how important the dropping of the charges against the WikiLeaks founder is in terms of defending press freedom – in order for him to return to good health in liberty in the company of his family."

The letter also says: "Like many well-known human-rights organisations and journalists’ organisations, we view the persecution of Julian Assange as an attack on press freedom and freedom of speech, which must be decisively rejected. Anybody committed to human rights and democracy must work to achieve Assange’s freedom."

The letter was initiated by the investigative journalist and writer Günter Wallraff and was co-signed by Sigmar Gabriel (former Federal Foreign Minister), Sevim Dagdelen (Member of the Bundestag), Wolfgang Kubicki (Vice-President of the Bundestag), Alice Schwarzer (editor of Emma magazine), Günter Verheugen (former Minister of State), Friedrich Küppersbusch (television producer) and more.

Another letter was sent by members of #IcelandicParliament last week to President Biden asking to drop the charges against Julian Assange.
"Recent revelations, where a key witness in the case admits to fabricating accusations against Mr Assange, should mark the end of this year-long assault on an award-winning journalist," the letter says.

95 #Greekparliamentarians joined the appeal to Biden calling to "drop this prosecution, an act that would be a clarion call for freedom that would echo around the globe." The letter follows: "Our countries are also increasingly confronted with the contradiction of advocating for press freedom abroad while holding Mr. Assange for years in the UK’s most notorious prison at the request of the US government."

Around 250 #doctors from across the globe urge President Biden and #AttorneyGeneralMerrickGarland to "drop the appeal and all charges in this case that constitutes an egregious violation of the rule of law, human rights and press freedom." The doctors implore the President "to end the misguided case you have inherited that violates the bedrock principles of our democracy."

In a narrow interpretation of the law, the #court essentially interpreted the #CFAA as a prohibition on breaking into a #computer system, whether that's as an outside #hacker or as an authorized user breaking into some gated part of that system.

"This provision covers those who obtain information from particular areas in the computer—such as files, folders, or databases—to which their computer access does not extend," the majority opinion reads. "It does not cover those who, like #VanBuren, have improper motives for obtaining information that is otherwise available to them."

Now remember the case of #AaronSchwartz. He downloaded the files with his normal access rights and did not commit any #crime according to the decision above. Nevertheless, he was investigated, which led to his suicide. Unfortunately, this will probably have no #consequences for the #prosecution.
