The #hubris of Western foreign #policy

The Western #system won the #ColdWar and this gave rise to a certain sense of superiority among the victors that this system will now prevail #worldwide. Instead of democracies, however, autocracies have prevailed. #Capitalism also works quite well in #China. When it comes to condemning the Russian war of aggression, important states prefer to remain neutral. Bitterly poor Africans can see the Western lifestyle in advertising and would like to live it, but this does not necessarily have to be in a #democracy for them. A democracy brings people like Trump to power and there are irreconcilable differences on important issues such as climate change. It doesn't matter whether you believe in climate change - nature conservation should be a worthwhile goal for everyone. Ultimately, it's not about #climate change, but about the society we want to live in. The desire to at least live in a peaceful world after the Second World #War has not been fulfilled. #Humanity has also failed to distribute #wealth fairly, which is the reason for many of today's conflicts. We are heading towards a new very dark age and we cannot prevent it because we have created an economic system that rewards short-term profits at the expense of the #environment. Since we don't begrudge these profits to others, we can only join in and destroy our own habitat, democracy and #future.

We all know the problems of the #modern #factory #farming #system. But, as bad as things are, they’re about to get even worse. New technologies are coming online that threaten to upend our understanding of food altogether. Technologies that could, ultimately, begin altering the human species itself. This is The Future of Food on The #Corbett Report.

Corporations invested in #carbon offsets that were ‘likely junk’, analysis says

source: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/30/corporate-carbon-offsets-credits

#Delta, #Gucci, #Volkswagen, #ExxonMobil, #Disney, #easyJet and #Nestlé are among the major corporations to have purchased millions of carbon credits from #climate friendly projects that are “likely junk” or worthless when it comes to offsetting their #greenhouse gas #emissions, according to a classification #system developed by Corporate Accountability, a non-profit, transnational corporate watchdog.

So the capitalists really don't give a shit about anything for short-term #profit, even if #humanity is destroyed in the process.

How our #financial #system works and the #redistribution

An investor suddenly appeared in a small Spanish town and rented a huge warehouse. He then announced that he would pay €10 for every cat that was brought to him. The inhabitants could hardly believe their ears, as the town was full of wild cats, but some went on the hunt and brought cats. They received their money. Word spread quickly and the warehouse was half full of cats. After a while, there were hardly any cats left in the village. Then the investor announced that from now on he would pay €20 per every additional cat. People hunted in the surrounding area and in neighboring villages and they received their money. There were hardly any cats left in the whole area except in the warehouse, which was well stocked. Now the investor has announced that each additional cat would be worth €50 to him from now on. However, he would now travel to the capital for his business and his managing director would look after the warehouse. When he returned in a week’s time, he would pay for all the cats. No sooner said than done. As soon as the investor had left, the manager told the people that they could buy cats from the warehouse for €45. They could then sell them back to the investor later for €50. People scraped together all their savings and some even went into debt. Everyone bought as many cats as they could. The more cats you owned, the higher the expected profit. Within a few days, the warehouse was completely empty and the managing director had made a handsome sum. Now everyone was waiting for the investor to return. But he never came and the managing director had also disappeared. You will have guessed it by now, the investor never returned and the entire region had to suffer under a heavy burden of debt from then on.

This is exactly how the #stock #market works.
