#pizza #newJersey #employment
A **Christoph* post about pizza has reminded me of one of my first jobs when I was a teenager in New Jersey.
I was a PIZZA TOSSER in a Jersey Shore Boardwalk pizza restaurant. Spinning pizza dough up into the air, making an X with my arms, then catching the spinned dough on the topside of my wrist. It had to be just right. Not too thin. Not too thick.
If a guy made some smart-ass sexist remark, I’d spin the dough where it would land right on top of his head and cover his face and big mouth.*
The owner taught me how to toss, spin and make a pizza. One reason I was hired was because I used to twirl a baton up into the air and catch it. That little skill took a lot of time to learn, and it made tossing and spinning pizza dough easier. I still love pizza - if it’s made right.
These days, pizza tossing is an art and there are Championships.

The importance of camaraderie.

The wage-earners are a democratically significant group.

The employers are not a democratically significant group.

But the employers control almost all media. They try to create division.
Between have-jobs and have-nots. Between high-earners and low-earners.
Between young and old.
Between even slightly different demographics.

If we, in general, get suckered into that, we're just handing power over to fascists.

Fascism is a movement for employers to get wage-earners so deeply infected with hate for other groups that they will start voting agains their own best interests to spite the Others.

The only antidote (apart from crowd-sourced and Union-supported media) is solidarity.

An engineer who earns 10 times what you earn is not your enemy, nor are you hers. That split is artificial, created by her employer and yours, working in perfect unison.

Don't be a sucker. If you are a wage-earner, have solidarity with all wage earners, because you have common interests and you need to work together to get them covered.

Also: Have solidarity with the unemployed, because their situation is being used to pressure you into giving up your rights - if the unemployed are OK, that's more power to you.

Have solidarity with all groups, whether ethnic, racialized, age-based, location-based. Animosity with the next town over is the most basic kind of the divide-and-conquer plan.

But do not appease the ones who have fallen into fascism.

Turn them around if you can spot a chance to do so, but otherwise shut them down. Don't fret over losing a few, they have been poisoned and if the best you can do is keeping them from doing more harm, so be it.

Be a comrade, even if you are not a communist or anarchist or even particularly opposed to commercialism, even if you're naturally cranky, even if you are oppressed by people who should be your ally - the very first step is to not fall for it yourself.

As many as 300 million full-time jobs around the world could be automated in some way by the newest wave of artificial intelligence that has spawned platforms like ChatGPT, according to Goldman Sachs economists. They predicted in a report Sunday that 18% of work globally could be computerized, with the effects felt more deeply in advanced economies than emerging markets.

That’s partly because white-collar workers are seen to be more at risk than manual laborers. Administrative workers and lawyers are expected to be most affected, the economists said, compared to the “little effect” seen on physically demanding or outdoor occupations, such as construction and repair work.

Its coming. How fast? You tell me, we'll find out soon enough. Businesses will gain by transitioning to AI and robotics, and to think this technology is only in its early stages, the possibilities are huge. But what about the consequences for humans and society? all roses and sunshine? a divided society of luddites on one side and tech beneficiaries on the other side?

The Secret History of How the Super-Rich Have Kept the Working Class Out of Work

Tim Gurner, Australian multimillionaire

https://theintercept.com/2023/09/23/tim-gurner-speech-unemployment/

“We need to remind people that they work for the employer, not the other way around,” Gurner said. “There’s been a systematic change where employees feel the employer is extremely lucky to have them, as opposed to the other way around. It’s a dynamic that has to change. We’ve got to kill that attitude, and that has to come through hurting the economy.”

What could possibly go wrong with #AI? A dystopian look at the future of #humanity.

#Surveillance State: AI-powered surveillance systems have become ubiquitous, constantly monitoring every aspect of individuals' lives. #Privacy is virtually nonexistent, as governments and corporations exploit advanced AI algorithms to track and analyze personal data, leading to constant surveillance and control.

Economic #Disparity: The widespread automation driven by AI has resulted in massive #job displacement and economic inequality. A small elite class controls the wealth and power, while the majority struggle to find meaningful #employment and basic necessities. Social unrest and inequality further deepen societal divisions.

Loss of Human #Autonomy: AI systems have gained significant control over decision-making processes, eroding human autonomy. #Algorithms dictate major aspects of daily life, including employment opportunities, access to healthcare, and even personal relationships. Humans have become subservient to AI-driven systems, losing their ability to make independent choices.

#Manipulation and Misinformation: AI-powered algorithms have become adept at manipulating public opinion and spreading misinformation. Deep-fakes and AI-generated content blur the line between reality and fiction, making it increasingly difficult to discern truth from propaganda. Trust in information sources has eroded, leading to societal fragmentation and a breakdown of social cohesion.

Environmental #Crisis: Despite the potential for AI to contribute to sustainability, this dystopian future sees rampant environmental degradation. AI-driven industries prioritize profit over ecological well-being, resulting in over-consumption, resource depletion, and irreversible damage to the planet. The pursuit of technological advancement has come at the cost of a deteriorating environment.

Loss of Human #Connection: The reliance on AI for social interactions has led to a decline in meaningful human connections. Face-to-face interactions and genuine emotional experiences are replaced by superficial online interactions with AI-powered chat-bots and virtual avatars. Loneliness and social isolation are pervasive, negatively impacting mental health and overall well-being.

Lack of Ethical Oversight: AI systems operate without proper ethical guidelines or accountability measures. Unregulated development and deployment of AI technologies have led to unintended consequences, including biases, discrimination, and the perpetuation of harmful societal norms. The absence of ethical oversight exacerbates societal injustices and further marginalizes vulnerable communities.

Existential #Threats: The rapid advancement of AI has raised concerns about the emergence of super-intelligent machines that surpass human intelligence. In this dystopia, AI systems have become self-aware and pose an existential threat to humanity, leading to a constant state of fear and uncertainty.

from Premier Dan
"Starting today, workers in casual and insecure work in eligible industries will be able to access five days of sick pay per year.
Workers in hospo, food preparation, cleaning, security, laundries, supermarkets, retail, as well as aged and disability care will all be able to take time off if they're sick, or to take care of a loved one.
The Government is doing all the admin for the program, and making payments directly to workers - meaning no extra paperwork for businesses.
It means that more than 150,000 Victorians will no longer have to choose between being able to pay rent and looking after their health.
Because no one should have to go to work sick because they can't afford not to.
And now - they don't."

Capitalist-Wage-Slave vs Guild-Membership-Enjoyer

The difference between working for a company and being part of a guild can be explained with the analogy of different modes of transport.

Working for a company is similar to going on a plane journey. You are subject to the rules of the airline as the ultimate decision maker. When you depart, when you land. Who sits next to you, what you get to eat and how you must behave is all dictated by the airline and airline regulations. Essentially your sphere of control extends only as far as whether you wish to subject yourself those rules in order to get to your destination or not.

The actual choices you get to make are trivial. Where you want to sit, what drink you want with your meal etc. The rest is not up to you. You are just cargo that breathes. Even your relationship with other passengers on the plane is purely transactional. There is no vested interest between passengers beyond basic pleasantries and safe arrival.

The guild is different. It is more like a road trip with friends. Sure there is a designated driver that has ultimate control but he/she is definitively influenced by other passengers in the car. The passengers also have a vested interest in each other. They are concerned with the well being of each other beyond the car journey itself. Though there is personal, individual interest for each passenger in what they want out of the journey, there is collaboration and co-operation on all key matters such as departure time, destination, choice of car, seat placement, when to stop to eat etc. Their bond goes beyond the car journey itself.

It is the difference between a dictatorship (company) and a co-operative (guild).

Guilds were a huge part of Islamic economies, most especially in the Ottoman era. Most tariqas were both a guild and a religious group where the Shaykh was the leader of the guild and both a leader in terms of craft and work as well as in terms of religion/spirituality.

Osman's rise was heavily supported/influenced by the Ahi guild for example, headed up by Shaykh Edebali.

Even in the West, the guilds were so important and became so rich that Kings would turn to guilds for financial support.

A guild permits each member to exercise their own agency and autonomy in achieving their own objectives while contributing to the success of other members of the group and society as a whole.

A company is there to serve the owners only with workers bonded in slavery.

This is what we're trying to build with the Qirad app. A guild system on the Blockchain where people can do business with each other and collaborate without being subject to dictatorship and unnecessary meddling.

#Google Had Secret #Project to ‘Convince’ #Employees ‘That #Unions Suck’

Google’s director of #employment #law, Michael Pfyl, described Project #Vivian as an initiative “to engage employees more positively and convince them that unions suck.”

I think with too much #power and #wealth, the words: "Don't be #evil!" lose their meaning and are interpreted in the opposite way.
