NOSFERATU, THE CALL OF THE DEATHBIRD by jozefvanwissem

  • "I was commissioned by Cinémathèque Française in Paris to compose the soundtrack to the restored original version of the “Nosferatu” film (1922). When I was writing the score I found a Dutch double 7 inch record with sounds of extinct birds on the streets of Rotterdam. I manipulated these found bird sounds by using electronics and added them to the score. “Beginning with a lute solo, his soundtrack incorporates electric guitar and distorted recordings of extinct birds, graduating from subtlety to gothic horror.” My soundtrack goes from silence to noise over the course of 90 minutes, he said, culminating in “dense, slow death metal.” (Jozef van Wissem)

Dat de huidige Nederlandse welvaart mede tot stand kwam dankzij slavernij is bekend. Minder aandacht is er voor de enorme inkomsten die voortvloeiden uit het cultuurstelsel. Bewoners van Nederlands-Indië waren verplicht een deel van hun oogst af te staan en dwangarbeid te verrichten. (...)

Dit [cultuurstelsel] was voor Nederland zo profijtelijk dat dit op het hoogtepunt eenderde tot zelfs de helft van de inkomsten voor de schatkist opleverde. Nederland kon daarmee niet alleen de staatsspoorwegen aanleggen, maar ook het Noordzeekanaal en de Nieuwe Waterweg, die de Amsterdamse en Rotterdamse havens hun strategische positie gaven. Nederlands-Indië was dus letterlijk een wingewest waarop de Nederlandse welvaart dreef. (...)

Het cultuurstelsel dat begin 19de eeuw door de Nederlandse koloniale staat werd ingevoerd was een radicalisering van de grondslagen die de VOC met de corvee had gelegd. De bevolking werd tegen schamele vergoedingen gedwongen op eenvijfde deel van de grond koffie, thee en andere commerciële agrarische producten te produceren en af te dragen (cultuurstelsel). Daarnaast werden zij gedwongen om zogenoemde ‘herendiensten’ te verrichten, te werken aan de koloniale infrastructuur van wegen, spoor, water- en irrigatiewerken. Dit gebeurde onder slechte omstandigheden en leidde tot hoge sterfte. Het verzet was grootschalig. De bevolking kwam in opstand of liep weg. Maar het koloniale dwangsysteem werd kracht bijgezet met rotanslagen of zware gevangenenarbeid. (...)

De afschaffing vanaf 1870 leidde slechts gedeeltelijk tot verbetering. Grond werd op nog grotere schaal vrijgegeven aan Europese koloniale ondernemers. De niet-Europese arbeiders waren onder de koloniale wet vaak niet vrij om zomaar te vertrekken en konden zwaar gestraft worden. De veroordeling tot dwangarbeid verving daarbij de vroegere fysieke bestraffing met de rotan. (...)

In the United States, the report's open-source data indicated one such service center in #NewYork City. In #Canada, three were established in #Toronto.

In South #America, there was one each in #Quito and #Guayaquil, #Ecuador; #Rio de Janeiro and #SãoPaulo, #Brazil; #BuenosAires, #Argentina; and #Viña del Mar, #Chile.

Most of the Chinese overseas police stations were located in #Europe, including nine in #Spain, the most of any country on the list: three in #Madrid, three in #Barcelona, two in #Valencia and one in #Santiago de Compostela.

#Italy was hosting the second-most stations in Europe with four: #Rome, #Milan, #Florence and #Prato.

In #France, three service centers were operating out of #Paris. #Portugal also hosted one each in #Porto, #Lisbon and #Madeira. In United Kingdom, the report found two in #London and one in #Glasgow.

The #Netherlands was hosting two such centers in #Amsterdam and #Rotterdam, respectively, while the #CzechRepublic had two in #Prague. #Budapest, #Hungary, also had two, one for each of the #Fuzhou and #Qingtian police bureaus—a common phenomenon across Europe.

European countries each hosting only one Chinese police station included #Dublin, #Ireland; #Bratislava, #Slovakia; #Frankfurt, #Germany; #Athens, #Greece; #Stockholm, #Sweden; #Vienna, #Austria; #Odessa, #Ukraine; and #Belgrade, #Serbia.

In #Africa, #BeninCity, #Nigeria; #Maseru, #Lesotho; and #DarEsSalaam, #Tanzania, each hosted one.

In Asia, at least one police center was operating out of #Ulaanbaatar, #Mongolia; #Sirdaryo, #Uzbekistan; #BandarSeriBegawan, #Brunei; #Tokyo, #Japan; and #PhnomPenh, #Cambodia.
