It's unfortunate that so many have no interest in questioning the official US version of government news concerning war and military conflict in light of the very shameful and violent history of US foreign policy. War requires state propaganda or citizens would not support it.

But “much worse” goes far beyond the grim toll in Ukraine...

Noam #Chomsky: What #Merkel had in mind we do not know. We do know that there is no basis in the historical or diplomatic record for her claims. I am inclined to agree with the astute commentator who posts under the name “Moon of Alabama.” He points out that “Merkel is under very harsh critique not only in the U.S. but also in her own conservative party. She is now out to justify her previous decisions as well as the current bad outcome in #Ukraine. My hunch is that she is making things up. Unfortunately she also creates serious damage.”

In general, the mainstream media all make certain basic assumptions, like the necessity of maintaining a welfare state for the rich. Within that framework, there's some room for differences of opinion, and it's entirely possible that the major #media are toward the liberal end of that range. In fact, in a well-designed #propaganda system, that's exactly where they should be. The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum—even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate. ~Noam #Chomsky

Noam Chomsky on Ukraine, US Foreign Policy, etc

Some points made by Chomsky:

  • The US is repeating the Soviet-Afghanistan conflict in Ukraine, trying to "bleed" Russia
  • Russia could have put more effort into diplomacy right before the war
  • The US is not interested in a diplomatic solution
  • A recent Washington Post article about Ukraine showed surprise at the restraint shown by Russia (as compared to the brutality of US/NATO attacks/invasions)
  • The Russian invasion of Ukraine was heavily provoked through NATO expansion but we cannot/won't say this in the west
  • There was no justification for the NATO attack against Serbia
  • "The treat of China" means that they don't take orders from the US
  • The US is acting lika a mafia - Even if countries disagree with the US they often obey out of fear of punishment

Take the United States today. It is living under a kind of totalitarian culture which has never existed in my lifetime, and is much worse in many ways than the Soviet Union before Gorbachev. Go back to the 1970s, people in the Soviet Russia could access BBC, Voice of America, German television, if they wanted to find out the news. If today, in the United States, you want to find out what [Sergei] Lavrov of Russia is saying, can't do it, it's barred. Americans are not permitted to hear what Russians are saying. Can't get Russian television, can't access Russian sources.
