The French far-right figure's remarks on Muslims in France were deemed discriminatory by a Paris court. The European rights court said the verdict against him did not violate his freedom of expression.
The ECHR today ruled that a conviction of hate speech by the French judiciary against far-right figure Eric Zemmour did not violate his right to freedom of speech.

With the populist slogan "Italy and Italian people first!" Meloni has called for less European bureaucracy, low taxes and a halt to immigration.
Her critics warn she's flirting with Italy's fascist history.
Neofascist parties have been based at Via Della Scrofa 39 since 1946— the Italian Social Movement, the National Alliance and now the Brothers of Italy, named after the first verse of the Italian national anthem. Party leader Giorgia Meloni has made a point of keeping the office in the historic building, which was once frequented by followers of former fascist leader Benito Mussolini.
Meloni said she has an unbroken relationship with history. Dictator Mussolini was "a complex personality," she has said in interviews. Even today, many Italians don't think everything was bad under Mussolini.

Perreau, the MIT professor, suggests the best defense lies within the texts that conservatives are distorting. “#GenderIdeology” may not exist as framed by its creators, but there is plenty of serious theoretical work on gender. A better understanding of those ideas would inoculate people from believing their misrepresentation, and make them realize that when it comes to gender construction, religious institutions are seasoned authorities. What else, other than social constructs, are the ideas that woman came from the rib of a man or that only men can serve as priests? What of the notion that the Virgin Mary procreated without ever having sex? “It’s actually the church which believes in #creationism,” Perreau says.“They are the ones who believe that you can define yourself out of nothing.”

The right’s position here is the better known, the movement having aggressively dedicated itself to stripping #women of fundamental rights for decades. Thanks in part to two #SupremeCourt justices who have been credibly accused of abusive behavior toward women, #Roe v. Wade, nearly 50 years a target, has been ruthlessly overturned.
Far more bewildering has been the fringe left jumping in with its own perhaps unintentionally but effectively misogynist agenda. There was a time when campus groups and activist organizations advocated strenuously on behalf of women. Women’s rights were #humanrights and something to fight for. Though the Equal Rights Amendment was never ratified, legal scholars and advocacy groups spent years working to otherwise establish women as a protected class.
But today, a number of academics, uber-progressives, #transgender activists, civil liberties organizations and medical organizations are working toward an opposite end: to deny women their humanity, reducing them to a mix of body parts and #gender stereotypes.

Following Russia’s unsuccessful assault on #Kyiv and northern #Ukraine, the Russian military has intensified its efforts in Ukraine’s east, particularly in the #Donetsk and #Luhansk Regions. But Russia’s #military has not been alone as its soldiers have edged slowly forward in recent weeks. Groups of irregular troops and fighters have also been seen in the area, operating alongside the Russian military in the direction of #Kharkiv Region.
Fighters from the #Wagner Private Military Company ( #PMC) have reportedly participated in the assault on the town of #Popasna. The National Bolshevik “Borey” group, meanwhile, has posted about their participation in an offensive in the #Donbas. The Cossack group, “Don”, is also reported to have been operating on the #Izyum front in the southern Kharkiv Region. (...)
Pavel Luzin, the Russian military analyst, told Bellingcat that groups like the #SDD – much like Ramzan #Kadyrov’s Chechen fighters – may be in Ukraine at least partly for PR reasons.
“All these mercenaries prevent the armed forces from increasing the popularity and political weight of the military within #Russia. The #war is conducted by unknown soldiers and officers, but the ‘volunteers’ are represented in official #media, mercenaries are represented in their social media and Chechens are represented on #TikTok”, said Luzin.
“So, the SDD together with other mercenaries are aimed to balance the armed forces and the officer corps from posing a potential political threat for the #Kremlin”.

A week and a half after an 18-year-old white supremacist murdered ten Black people in a mass shooting in a #Buffalo supermarket, another 18-year-old killed nineteen children and two teachers at a school in #Uvalde, Texas attended by predominantly working-class and Latino/Latina students. The husband of one of those teachers subsequently died of a heart attack brought on by grief.
The town of Uvalde budgets almost half a million dollars for school #security and monitoring services, augmented by $69,000 from the #Texas state #government for metal detectors, barriers, security systems, “campus-wide active shooter alarm systems,” and the like. Despite receiving almost 40% of the city budget and an additional half a million dollars of state grant money, the Uvalde #police dragged their feet for an unusually long time during the massacre while parents begged them to do something.
