Ukraine
The mass-media memory hole is proving invaluable in protecting the public from uncomfortable truths about Ukraine. Western leaders’ expression of concern for Ukraine is cover for their desire to see Russian leader Vladimir Putin removed from power and Russia ‘weakened’, as US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin admitted earlier this year. Australian political analyst Caitlin Johnstone noted recently that:

‘Arguably the single most egregious display of war propaganda in the 21st century occurred last year, when the entire western political/media class began uniformly bleating the word “unprovoked” in reference to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.’

Pointing out that the West ‘provoked’ Russia is not the same as saying that the Russian invasion of Ukraine was justified. In fact, we were clear in our first media alert following the invasion:

‘Russia’s attack is a textbook example of “the supreme crime”, the waging of a war of aggression.’ (...)

‘We know that western actions provoked the war in Ukraine because many western foreign policy experts spent years warning that western actions would provoke a war in Ukraine.’

But, ultimately, the US blocked the peace efforts. Sachs paraphrased Bennett’s explanation as to why:

‘They [the US] wanted to look tough to China. They were worried that this could look weak to China.’

Incredible! The US’s primary concern is to look strong to China, its chief rival in world affairs. This recalls the motivation behind the US dropping atomic bombs on Japan at the end of the Second World War as a show of might to the Soviet Union. (...)

Libya
The memory-hole phenomenon is a huge factor in media coverage of Libya which, as we wrote last week, has suffered terribly in recent flooding and the collapse of two dams. The city of Derna was washed into the sea after 40cm of rain fell in twenty-four hours, leaving 20,000 people dead.

But vital recent history has been almost wholly buried by state-corporate media. In 2011, NATO’s attack on Libya essentially destroyed the state and killed an estimated 40,000 people. The nation, once one of Africa’s most advanced countries for health care and education, became a failed state, with the collapse of essential services, the re-emergence of slave markets and raging civil war. Ministeries in Nederland geven jaarlijks miljarden uit aan extern personeel zoals consultants. Rosie Collington (30) deed onderzoek naar de consultancy-industrie. Ze waarschuwt ervoor dat de publieke sector wordt uitgehold door een bedrijfstak vol belangenverstrengeling.

Politici en publiek hebben het geloof in publieke diensten verloren, zegt Rosie Collington. En mensen die in de publieke sector werken, hebben het vertrouwen in zichzelf verloren. Dat is volgens haar, in de kern, de reden dat complete overheidstaken zijn overgenomen door consultants. ‘Ze bedenken beleid én voeren het uit.’ Welke dramatische gevolgen dat heeft, zet Collington (30) uiteen in het net verschenen boek De Consultancy Industrie. Ook de Nederlandse overheid besteedt veel uit. Vorig jaar gaven ministeries een recordbedrag van 2,7 miljard uit aan extern personeel, zoals ict’ers, interim managers én consultants. Dat is ruim 14 procent van het personeelsbudget, ook al is in 2010 afgesproken dat 10 procent het maximum zou moeten zijn. (...)

‘Dat komt niet alleen door de verkooptechnieken van consultants, die hun cliënten ervan overtuigen dat zij neutrale handelaren in expertise zijn, en werkelijk waarde toevoegen. De diepere oorzaak ligt in de geschiedenis, in de manier waarop we binnen het kapitalisme tegen de rol van de overheid aan zijn gaan kijken.’

‘Het is geen toeval dat de uitgaven aan consultants in de jaren ’80, onder Reagan in de Verenigde Staten en onder Thatcher in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, spectaculair zijn gaan stijgen.’ (...)

‘Het voor langere tijd uitbesteden van overheidstaken, dat kwam daarna pas echt goed op gang onder de linkse leiders van de zogenoemde Derde Weg: Clinton in de VS, Blair in het VK en bij jullie Wim Kok.’ (...)

‘De filosofie van de Derde Weg was dat de overheid moest sturen en niet moest roeien. Maar dat is onlogisch. Overheden weten niet hoe ze moeten sturen als ze al zo lang niet zelf meer hebben geroeid. Je hebt eigen, praktische ervaring nodig om te kunnen bepalen wat er moet gebeuren.’ (...)

‘Inkopen kan veel meer kosten dan wanneer je een taak zelf had verricht. Die kosten zijn vooral hoog op de lange termijn. Want we willen als burgers een overheid die zich kan aanpassen als wij nieuwe behoeften hebben. Zoals nu bijvoorbeeld de klimaatcrisis te lijf gaan. Of het reguleren van big tech. Maar doordat de overheid allerlei competenties niet zelf ontwikkelt, verliest zij het vermogen om zich aan te passen aan nieuwe situaties. Daarom schrijven wij dat het uitbesteden van werk aan consultants de overheid infantiliseert.

‘Die theorie van de slanke organisatie gaat uit van een idee over kennis dat volstrekt irreëel is. Alsof je die in een presentatie kan zetten en kan overdragen. Maar met de meeste kennis kan dat niet. Zeker niet in de publieke sector, waar je je hoort te baseren op wat je van dag tot dag leert over je beleidsterrein, je team en vooral de gemeenschap voor wie je beleid is bedoeld. Dat is niet te standaardiseren.

‘Neem klimaatverandering. We weten dat de overheid daar nog heel lang mee bezig zal zijn. Dat maakt het nog logischer om kennis in huis te ontwikkelen. Toch is de klimaatconsultancy geëxplodeerd. En wij zeggen niet dat de overheid nooit met anderen moet samenwerken, uiteraard niet. Dit is geen pleidooi om overheden alles zelf te laten doen. Maar ook om goed samen te werken heb je kennis nodig.’ (...)

‘We vergelijken consultants met een slechte therapeut die zijn cliënten eeuwig in therapie houdt, in plaats van hen te helpen instrumenten te ontwikkelen waarmee zij op eigen benen kunnen staan.’ (...)

De oorspronkelijke, Engelse titel van het boek is The Big Con, de grote zwendel. De schade van het outsourcen, beschrijven Collington en Mazzucato daarin, is vaak pas na jaren te zien. Zo is met het outsourcen van ict al in de jaren ’90 begonnen en pas de laatste jaren worden de gevolgen duidelijk. (...)

Collington wijst er fijntjes op dat buitenproportioneel veel werknemers van de grote consultancyfirma’s werken in belastingparadijzen zoals de Kaaimaneilanden. Het is dus aannemelijk dat zij bedrijven helpen om zo min mogelijk belasting te betalen aan de overheden die ze intussen adviseren. Zo helpen ze dus actief om die overheden te verzwakken. (...)

(now 20 years ago) Ten years ago, a major American magazine published a bombshell report about the non-existence of Iraq’s WMDs. But it was hardly noticed by a corporate press corps too busy hyping the threat from those non-existent weapons.

The story appeared in the March 3, 2003, issue of #Newsweek–a short piece with the headline “The Defector’s Secrets.” It almost seemed as if the magazine didn’t know what it had on its hands. Or perhaps it did.

Inspectors were told “that after the Gulf War, #Iraq destroyed all its chemical and biological weapons stocks and the missiles to deliver them,” Barry wrote. All that remained were “hidden blueprints, computer disks, microfiches” and production molds. The weapons were destroyed secretly, in order to hide their existence from inspectors, in the hopes of someday resuming production after inspections had finished. The #CIA and MI6 were told the same story, Barry reported, and “a military aide who defected with Kamel… backed Kamel’s assertions about the destruction of #WMD stocks.”

20 years ago, US started the illegal invasion of Iraq, based on lies and manufacture "proof", a crime against humanity that went unpunished.

The architects of the invasion, the ones who lied again and again and those who committed war crime in the 2 decades long invasion of Iraq are all free. Except for a few "bad apples" some who received the presidential pardon from Trump. They all living their happy lives.

The got rich, either during the war, or after it when they wrote books, received 100s of thousands of dollars for speech and interviews justifying their actions or play dumb or forgetful.

The same people are now calling for prosecution of Putin and his criminal foot soldiers for the invasion of Ukraine.

En als het even kan plaatsen de nieuwe asocialen zichzelf buiten de samenleving, op een autarkisch boerderijtje in Portugal.

In Eigen welzijn eerst zet schrijfster Roxane van Iperen zeer effectief de kettingzaag in het gedrag van yogamoeders en andere spirituele kruidenheksen die Facebook en omstreken opstoken met deskundologische wijsheden over opvoeding of huidverzorging. (...) Wat we moeten zien is ‘wellness-rechts’, een agressieve marketingmachine die extreem-rechts gedachtengoed normaliseert. Men schakelt in die contreien nu in één moeite van anti-vaccinatie naar pro-Poetin. Tussen ‘eigen lijf eerst’ en ‘eigen volk eerst’ zit weinig licht. (...)

[V]an Iperen (...) laat zien hoe de pseudowetenschap over het ‘zelfreinigend vermogen van het lichaam’ op twee manieren raakt aan hedendaagse onverdraagzaamheid. Door het ‘terug naar de natuur’-thema van al die websites, waarvan de kern is dat mannen werken en vrouwen het gezin onderhouden. En door het wantrouwen in overheid en onderzoek dat ‘wellness-rechts’ koestert. (...)

Een van de verklaringen die Van Iperen geeft voor het ontstaan van wellness-rechts is de statusangst van de middenklasse. De afgelopen decennia heeft de overheid burgers met meer eigen verantwoordelijkheid opgezadeld. Veel mensen zijn er sindsdien ook in geslaagd iets van hun leven te maken – mooie banen, mooie huizen, leuke kinderen. Maar daarmee kwam ook angst. Dat mensen die niet hard werken toch geld krijgen, maar dan van de staat. Of nog erger, dat ook vreemdelingen een plek in de middenklasse krijgen. En dat dus de eigen status daalt, of anders wel die van de kinderen. (...)

Dat solidariteit lijdt onder het idee dat je eigen verdienste de enige maatstaf voor succes is, is scherp verwoord door de Engelse socioloog Michael Young (1915-2002). Diens satirisch-futurologische klassieker De opkomst van de meritocratie uit 1958 is opnieuw uitgebracht. (...)

In 2034 is zowel de Britse aristocratie als de moderne democratie vervangen door een ‘meritocratie’: de verdienstelijken besturen het land. Dat klinkt eerlijk, want het luie en domme kind van een rijk man kan dus geen aanspraak meer maken op een mooi baantje en het slimme hardwerkende kind van een gewone werknemer wel. Maar Young beschrijft ook de nadelen van deze gedachtegang, namelijk dat de nieuwe elite zich ontheven voelt van verantwoordelijkheid ten opzichte van mensen zonder succes. Arme mensen kunnen immers niet beter? (...)

[D]e overspannen focus op de economische kanten van het onderwijs; het dwangmatig testen van kinderen op intelligentie en het negeren van moed, charme of creativiteit, de verlatenheid onder de groep mensen die al vroeg uit het schoolsysteem zijn geduwd, bleek vrij nauwkeurig te voorspellen. (...)

Ook in het egoïsme van wellness-rechts klinkt de dystopische kant van de meritocratie sterk door, zoals van Iperen laat zien. ‘Van noblesse oblige, een zekere mildheid jegens mensen die het zwaar hebben, of een gevoel van verantwoordelijkheid om zich in de wereld om hen heen te verdiepen is nauwelijks sprake.’ Of dat indruk maakt op Facebook-moms is de vraag. Het pamflet lijkt vooral bedoeld als wake-upcall voor het midden. Dat het tijd wordt woorden als ‘tolerant’ of ‘verlicht’ eens af te stoffen, voor we allemaal nieuwe asocialen zijn.

It pulls no punches about how the #slaughter was to help Tony #Blair's party gain re-election.

In 2002, Ferguson predicted that, by 2080, up to 150,000 people could die from exposure to #BSE (mad cow disease) in beef. In the U.K., there were only 177 deaths from BSE.

In 2005, Ferguson predicted that up to 150 million people could be killed from #bird flu. In the end, only 282 people died worldwide from the disease between 2003 and 2009.

In 2009, a government estimate, based on Ferguson’s advice, said a “reasonable worst-case scenario” was that the #swine flu would lead to 65,000 British deaths. In the end, swine flu killed 457 people in the U.K.

Last March, Ferguson admitted that his #Imperial College model of the COVID-19 disease was based on undocumented, 13-year-old computer code that was intended to be used for a feared #influenza pandemic, rather than a #coronavirus. Ferguson declined to release his original code so other scientists could check his results. He only released a heavily revised set of code last week, after a six-week delay.
