We need to talk about water – and the fact that the world is running out of it
The Guardian
On a planet getting hotter and drier by the year, governments are wilfully ignoring a looming crisis. (...)
(Text continues underneath the photo.)

To keep pace with the global demand for food, crop production needs to grow by at least 50% by 2050. (...)
A paper published in 2017 estimated that to match crop production to expected demand, water use for irrigation would have to increase by 146% by the middle of this century. One minor problem. Water is already maxed out.
In general, the dry parts of the world are becoming drier, partly through reduced rainfall; partly through declining river flow as mountain ice and snow retreats; and partly through rising temperatures causing increased evaporation and increased transpiration by plants. (...)
Already, agriculture accounts for 90% of the world’s freshwater use. We have pumped so much out of the ground that we’ve changed the Earth’s spin. The water required to meet growing food demand simply does not exist.
That 2017 paper should have sent everyone scrambling. But as usual, it was ignored by policymakers and the media. (...)
Above all, we need to change our diets. Those of us with dietary choice (in other words, the richer half of the world’s population) should seek to minimise the water footprint of our food. With apologies for harping on about it, this is yet another reason to switch to an animal-free diet, which reduces both total crop demand and, in most cases, water use. (...)
This is yet another of those massive neglected issues, any one of which could be fatal to peace and prosperity on a habitable planet. Somehow, we need to recover our focus.

Maps help us see where we are & how we relate to & interact with places or a place (as if there were edges! ALL maps lie, AND they can offer big pictures of reality.)
This video of maps features views of #permaculture teacher / designer Geoff Lawton's home in #Australia. Using maps provided by Ben Missimer, Geoff was able to improve his already outstanding watershed restabilisation plan after it stood the test of extreme heavy #rainfall & #flooding. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qeb6nfvakmk81q1/AABw5yg-uSjwqHRWml8mOoG7a?dl=0&preview=Zaytuna+Farm+Animation+Sampler+Blowout.mp4

Heavy rain has made the life for displaced Palestinians even harder
Many parts of Gaza have received rain equal to 3 months of average rainfall in 24 hours.
It has made life of those homeless and living in tents even harder and impossible to bury their deaths.
Some people may find this image disturbing.

Rainfall levels across Mexico reach historic lows
#Mexico is experiencing historically low levels of #rainfall this year, according to the National Water Commission (Conagua).
From Jan. 1 to June 11, the country recorded 20.1% less rainfall than in the same period of 2022, decreasing the level of water stored in reservoirs.
The Conagua said that the accumulated rainfall in the first half of the year was equivalent to 115.8 mm - 29.1 mm below the 20-year average.
Because of the blistering heat wave sweeping over many parts of the country and drought in some regions, Mexico’s major reservoirs reported a drop of 2.5% in water storage levels between June 5 and 11.
Of these 210 reservoirs, only three reported full storage capacity; the majority reported water storage levels below 50%.

#Drought takes toll on #Tuscany's famed #olive oil and #wine #production
A lack of #rainfall since spring has affected even #plants that traditionally thrive in #hot and dry conditions.
...
The effects of #climate #change not only impact production and plants but are even changing the #geography and rhythms of the Italian #farming landscape. A few years ago, olive groves were mainly the preserve of historically hot and arid areas such as #Sicily. Now regions such as Val d'Aosta in the far north of Italy, famous for its ski resorts and mountains, can produce their own oil.

Soil water availability today in Brazil
Most of Brazil has a serious deficit in soil moisture today. The southern parts of the Brazilian Amazon are also affected via deforestation and alterations in regional rainfall. Defend natural habitats and their peoples, boycott businesses that profit from destruction and oppression.
