The #anarchist case against militant #atheism

Unsurprisingly, the vast contingent of radical socialists, anarchists, and religious scholars from a diversity of backgrounds have a lot of trouble interacting with anti-theists in any serious capacity, as it usually becomes clear that these folks don’t actually care about nuanced engagement with historical record, religious studies, or anthropology. Most often, anti-theism is a misplaced vitriolic reaction to the violence committed by the Church, its abusive Clergy, and its vigilante crusaders that places the blame not on the institutions and individuals involved, but the God they claim to understand.

To be blunt: anti-theists take reactionary zealots at their word when they claim to have read the Bible accurately and insist they’re doing God’s work. This is an abjectly awful way to engage critically with religious texts from any perspective. It affirms the divine status of holy texts, rather than regarding them simply as texts; it grants legitimacy to traditionalists who claim to know the will of God; it implies that Christian nationalism is as good for Christians as it claims to be (a claim falsified by the most cursory glance at the history of religious governance); and it ignores the actual reason why things like traditionalism, biblical literalism, and dogmatism are bad. Secular reactionaries push the exact same bullshit and appeal to the exact same audience as Televangelists and alt-lite youth pastors because, fun fact, all of them are fucking liars.

#Russia is the aggressor here. This is crystal clear. What is not clear is what should attract these “superfluous” Ukrainians to a country that makes no effort to find a space for them. Nothing except for the sheer horror of Russia. It will be worse there; here it’s just bad. What is better – worse or bad? Bad is better, of course! That’s all the choice you are given.
“You don’t like it here? Then fuck off.” Well, thanks for that. At least you are allowed to leave the world where you grew up, once loved, dreamed. They’ll fill up the void with a trustworthy citizen. Unless you’re a man of conscription age, of course. Then you can’t go fuck off anywhere.

When interrogating activists, Russian #cops sometimes ask whether you support “the Ukrainian #ideology”. You inevitably wonder what that is. It happens that an activist replies with a counterquestion: “What do you mean by ‘the Ukrainian ideology'”? And the enforcer of Russian law says: “You must know. You are an educated person, aren’t you?”
Is there an English, French or Spanish ideology? The French one is claimed to exist. As one emigrant said, “It is #liberty, #equality, fraternity and #secularity (the #church has no dominance over principles of secular humanism). This is literally an official formula”. However, a question remains of why a certain nation became for Russians a personification of any ideology. Since the #USSR collapsed, no other former republic of the union has become such a personification. A Nihilist reporter talked with Ukrainians and Russians about this phenomenon and the peculiarities of #police mentality.
There is an opinion that Russians believe the very idea of the existence of the Ukrainian language and #culture, as well as of an independent Ukrainian state, to be a hostile ideology. Some argue that the police, out of their ignorance, simply do not understand the meaning of the term, confusing “ideology” with #pacifism, #humanism or who knows what.

Of course, Suslov is just one man, and he was never a political dissident. But his presence at #HSE is emblematic of the uncomfortable affinity between Russian #liberalism and #Kremlin #imperialism, underscoring the former’s limits as a politically transformative force. However, since the 2011−2012 protests,# Putin has effectively unleashed a cold #civilwar inside the country, polarising Russian #society and labelling all those who disagree with him as ‘traitors’. He had resorted to the ‘divide and rule’ strategy before. One well-known example is the statement he made in the autumn of 2007 about people begging for scraps at foreign embassies. However, ten years ago this polarising rhetoric became an integral part of the narrative disseminated by the government’s #propaganda. At present, the society is more divided than ever between the supporters of the regime and the #opposition: the two camps have nothing in common at all. And this is a bad signal for Russia’s future.

As soon as the full-scale invasion began, Ukrainians everywhere asked only one question: “Why? Why do they hate us so much? ”
Then the whole #society united in one movement, to tell the truth to so-called ordinary Russians.
We would massively send them photos and videos of the atrocities committed by Russian soldiers in #Ukraine. We would call our acquaintances and relatives in #Russia to explain the horrors of this #war. Hoping to arouse their sympathy. We thought that when the Russians saw all the atrocities, they would definitely condemn this lawlessness.
Instead, we saw en masse the absence of any #compassion.
Not to a 1-year-old boy from the city of #Izium, who was raped by two Russian soldiers simultaneously and died. Not to a 16-year-old girl from #Irpin, whose nails were torn off by Russians, then she was raped and shot in the head.
The majority of Russians have not condemned all these #warcrimes. They begin to show #pride and approval.

The world has about 10 weeks of wheat supplies stored as Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its fourth month, a food insecurity expert told the UN.

Sara Menker, the CEO of agriculture analytics firm Gro Intelligence, told the UN Security Council that the Russia-Ukraine war was not the cause of a food security crisis but "simply added fuel to a fire that was long burning."

Menker said droughts across the world are contributing to declining wheat resources. Menker said global food supplies are also being impacted by climate change and fertilizer shortages.

"We currently only have 10 weeks of global consumption sitting in inventory around the world. Conditions today are worse than those experienced in 2007 and 2008," she said.

Menker said estimates from official government agencies from across the world show that wheat inventories at 33% of annual consumption, but added that models created by Gro Intelligence show that the figure may actually be closer to 20%, a level not seen since 2007 and 2008.

"It is important to note that the lowest grain inventory levels the world has ever seen are now occurring while access to fertilizers is highly constrained," she said. "And drought in wheat growing regions around the world is the most extreme it's been in over 20 years. Similar inventory concerns also apply to corn and other grains."
