They are hardly obvious bedfellows: the Anne Frank Trust #UK and an activist who has condemned “Zionist scum”, compared Jews to #Nazis and justified #Hamas rocket attacks.
But last week, the #charity founded in Anne Frank’s name was forced to apologise for inviting Nasima Begum – a “performance poet, producer and creative practitioner” – to host one of its storytelling workshops.

Animal Environment Associated (AEA) in #Bethlehem #Palestine is the only animal #shelter situated in the #WestBank. Founded by Diana Babish in 2016, the organisation provides a safe environment for thousands of #dogs and #cats and works with the local authorities to prevent the poisoning and shooting of dogs as a brutal form of animal control. AEA-Bethlehem is the only shelter that provides #treatment to injured dogs, cats and other #animals, and arranges formal animal #fostering and adaptions. They also provide #spay and #neutering services to the animals in their care, and to those who will be adopted. AEA-Bethlehem is also working to change policies that allow the abuse and the poisoning of dogs without penalty and for vets that witness these atrocities to be held accountable.. AEA-Bethlehem receives no government #funding, relying completely on urgently needed #donations. They also encourage local people to #volunteer at the shelter and visit schools to educate children about #AnimalWelfare and the #environment.

Why should you care if 80% of your #donation goes on fancy parties, if the end result is better for good causes? And how many brilliant people end up as bankers, not fundraisers, because we're so sniffy about charities paying big bucks?

Harry Chapin: When in Doubt, Do Something is the inspiring story of Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/activist Harry Chapin (“Cat’s in the Cradle”). Chapin sold over 16 million albums and was one of his generation’s most beloved artist-activists who spent his fame and fortune trying to end world hunger before his tragic passing.
The film features Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Peter Seeger, Sir Bob Geldof, Kenny Rogers, Graham Nash, Pat Benatar, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Robert Lamm, Richie Havens, and Harry Belafonte intimately reflecting on Chapin’s larger-than-life impact on music and the world including his founding, along with Bill Ayres, of WhyHunger – the nonprofit organization leading the movement to end hunger and advance the human right to nutritious food in the U.S. and around the world.

Probably from Reverand John Whatson, pseudonym Ian MacLaren, in 1897.
The original form substitutes "pitiful" for "kind":
Be pitiful, for every man is fighting a hard battle
The archaic meaning being:
pitiful, A. adj. 1. Full of or characterized by pity; compassionate, merciful, tender. Now rare.
Modern terms might be charitable, empathetic, or understanding. I'll note that there are times when outright kindness is somewhat dampened by the fact that the other's battle seems to be pitched in whole or part against me.
A relatively modern (1965, Chicago Tribune) explanation expands the concept:
Most of us are acutely aware of our own struggles and we are preoccupied with our own problems. We sympathize with ourselves because we see our own difficulties so clearly. But Ian MacLaren noted wisely, “Let us be kind to one another, for most of us are fighting a hard battle.”
MacClaren's own original explanation:
This man beside us also has a hard fight with an unfavouring world, with strong temptations, with doubts and fears, with wounds of the past which have skinned over, but which smart when they are touched. It is a fact, however surprising. And when this occurs to us we are moved to deal kindly with him, to bid him be of good cheer, to let him understand that we are also fighting a battle; we are bound not to irritate him, nor press hardly upon him nor help his lower self.
One element of the concept I refer to as #manifestation addresses this, in that personal lived experience and history are extraordinarily difficult to express or perceive, and that much behaviour which seems hostile or irrational may well have some validity in personal history.

**Victory 75 **is a moving collection of short stories, written to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day.
These stories are filled with thoughtful reminiscing, friendships, loves found and loves lost, spirituality, and even a bit of hilarity..
Patricia, Annie and Jean by Paul White tells of relationships, Butterflies of Dunkirk by Claire Plaisted gave me chills and goosebumps, and Rosemary for Remembrance by Julia Blake brought tears to my eyes.
There is a story or two for everyone. I guarantee that they will stir your emotions and thoughts and stick with you long after you close the book.
