August 13, 2024. 5:30 PM. What a day, a fire in the building in the early morning hours, and then this....

Oh!! Wow!! A big thunderstorm has just blown in. Wind, rain thunder and lightning! I've run around and opened all the windows so fresh air will blow in. I also opened my front door for Cross Ventilation - to blow some of the fire smoke smell in the hallway....somewhere else.
From hurricane experiences in the Southern states, I instinctively turn off the lights and fans. The strong wind inside my home is causing papers to fly around in the air, and things are crashing to the floor. That's OK. Everything outside is getting a good wash and cooling off..and inside has been 'refreshed.'
It won't last long. I can already smell the strong fire smoke out in the hallway. I've closed the front door. The wind is just a slight breeze. There's no longer any 'Cross Ventilation'. Turning the fans back on. Turning lights back on. All that's left is an occasional sound of thunder. No lightning. No rain. The temperature has wonderfully..gone down.
This day isn't over yet.

Message from a Relative in New York City

- "All is as good as can be. So much to do with no time. Woah your windows!! I would have never thought of that. Impressive!
The heat is crazy and everyone and every living thing is feeling it.

It sucks to be in the city in these temperatures.

The subways feels like Satan is going to pop out any second and the streets sinks of human feces and pee just baking in an oven with no ventilation.

I’m so happy I have a house in Long Island that I can come back to every day and can breathe some fresh air."

How the Stream Deck rose from the ashes of a legendary keyboard

A computer keyboard showing on its left side showing two columns of 5 keys each with a small display under the key cap.
The keyboard was just a concept, dreamed up by Art Lebedev, a Russian design firm, and it was an ambitious idea at that: called the Optimus Maximus, it would require over 100 built-in screens using display technology that wasn’t readily available at the time. With all the excitement, the firm decided to make it real.

“You’re on a sinking ship, you’ve got to figure out what you’re going to do,” recalls Elgato’s Julian Fest, whose parents originally founded the company in 1999.

A very interesting read, and also a lesson in how imminently bankrupt companies can turn their whole game around by doing something different (think also of Netflix).

Dear #developer,
I’m reaching out to you to offer you an #opportunity to make you and your #projects better known.
#Unitoo (unitoo.it/en), in 2019 started a #radio (radio.unitoo.it) dedicated to #FOSS and #CreativeCommon #music.
I’d love for you to join them and contribute to some content.
You’ll be entitled to a 3 minutes free #audio recording, to #promote your #code #repository and a chance to discover new #opportunities in the #world of #Software #Development.
A looped #broadcasting of such content/media will be scheduled to grant everyone the chance to promote their #work.
At first a recording in #English would be preferable to reach a wider #audience.
How to join? Send them an email with the following:

- #voice recording
- a #title
- #Author’s name
- a brief #summary of your project
- #link to the code repository in question at radio dot unitoo dot it and they’ll handle the rest.

This is just the #beginning.
They have #planned a #series of #podcast that can feature your project.
We believe FOSS is severely lacking in #visibility and want to #change that by providing a stage for you all to perform on. Your #contribution is greatly appreciated.

Happy #HackListening!

An (incomplete) list of every terrible #policy the Conservatives have inflicted on #Britain since 2010

Source: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/jul/03/list-terrible-policy-conservatives-britain-2010

… the point is clear: in a vast number of ways, in almost every realm of #government activity, this lot have made life worse. The policies referred to in every sentence in this article have damaged untold thousands of lives. The #Conservative party has created exactly the broken Britain it claimed its mission was to repair.

Who knew!!! I just found out today that it's WINTER IN AUSTRALIA!!

I had been searching on the Internet for a cool place I could run away to and escape the blazing heat waves in Utah.

  • Antarctica is the coldest continent on Earth. The average temperature in the interior throughout the year is about -57°C, with the minimum temperature being -90°C during the winter season. Although the coast is warmer and temperatures can reach a maximum of between -2°C and 8°C during the summer.
  • * know there's going to be mass Climate Change Refugees all over the planet Earth. I'm not the only one thinking of escaping dire circumstances. Like the birds and animals - they migrate from season to season to different places to survive. I think that's how it will be for us. We won't have just one home, and will travel not only because of dire weather conditions, but also for food.* Back to the Future. If too many of us head to Antarctica, we will destroy it.
