Denouncing critics of Israel as ‘un-Jews’ or antisemites is a perversion of history

The Guardian

The story of Jewish suffering means there is a moral necessity to fight oppression everywhere. (...)

The story of Zuckerman and his erasure is one of many told by Geoffrey Levin in his new book Our Palestine Question, on the forgotten history of Jewish dissent in America in the decades following the founding of Israel. It is one of several accounts that will be published this year exploring the history of American Jewish opposition to Zionism and support for the Palestinian cause. (...)

For many Jews, the existential threat posed by Hamas gives Israel the right to take any measures necessary to eliminate the organisation. For others, whatever the horrors of the Hamas attack, the destruction of Gaza, the deaths of more than 25,000 people and the displacement of almost the entire population is unconscionable and cuts against the grain of Jewish ethical traditions. (...)

In 2021, an essay in the Jewish magazine Tablet labelled Jews too critical of Israel or Zionism as “un-Jews”. Three years on, it is a description that seems to have found greater resonance.

Perhaps in no country is official ostracism of “un-Jews” more entrenched than in Germany. “To be a leftwing Jew in today’s Germany is to live in a state of permanent cognitive dissonance,” says Susan Neiman, a Jewish American philosopher and director of the Einstein Forum in Potsdam for the past quarter of a century. “German politicians and media talk incessantly about protecting Jews from antisemitism,” but many who “criticise the Israeli government and the war on Gaza have been cancelled and certainly attacked. I’m an Israeli citizen and I’ve been accused of being a Hamas supporter, and even a Nazi, in mainstream media. Need I add that I am neither?” (...)

According to the researcher Emily Dische-Becker, almost a third of those cancelled in Germany for their supposed antisemitism have been Jews. There is, as the Israeli-born architect and academic Eyal Weizman has acidly put it, a certain irony in “being lectured [on how to be properly Jewish] by the children and grandchildren of the perpetrators who murdered our families and who now dare to tell us that we are antisemitic”. (...)

What guided Jewish critics, particularly of Israeli policies towards Palestinian refugees, in the late 1940s and 1950s, was, as Levin shows, their attachment to Jewish traditions that reject discrimination or barbarism against any group. (...)

What makes all this particularly troubling, Neiman observes, is the upsurge in antisemitism in Germany and elsewhere. Rather than policing Jewish intellectuals and activists, “insisting on unconditional loyalty to Israel” and “downplaying the suffering in Gaza”, what is needed, Nieman argues, is to support those individuals and organisations that are building forms of solidarity that can both challenge antisemitism and anti-Muslim bigotry, and promote justice in Palestine and Israel.

1948: Creation & Catastrophe (Full documentary)
Through riveting and moving personal recollections of both #Palestinians and #Israelis, 1948: Creation & Catastrophe reveals the shocking events of the most pivotal year in the most controversial conflict in the world. It tells the story of the establishment of Israel as seen through the eyes of the people who lived it. But rather than being a history lesson, this documentary is a primer for the present. It is simply not possible to make sense of what is happening today without an understanding of 1948. This documentary was the last chance for many of its Israeli and Palestinian characters to narrate their first-hand accounts of the creation of a state and the expulsion of a nation. Hear stories from the Israelis and Palestinians who personally lived through events in Haifa, Jaffa, Dayr Yasin, Acre, Jerusalem, Ramla, Lydda and more. These shocking and dramatic events reveal the core of what drives the conflict today.

The height of #Blinken's hypocrisy: "The only road to lasting peace and security in the region is through two states for two peoples.

Even as we address this immediate crisis, we must redouble our collective efforts to build an enduring political solution to the conflict between #Israelis and #Palestinians."

They Won’t Fight for Israel

So why should anyone else? Neither #BenShapiro nor #YairNetanyahu, the son of the Prime Minister, have any interest in #defending their fellow #Israelis against #Hamas, #Hezbollah, or any other enemies who might harm them.

The #son of #Israel’s Prime Minister #BenjaminNetanyahu has been blasted for staying in #Miami while #reservists returned home to #fight against Hamas. Yair Netanyahu, 32, has been in #Florida since at least April, after his father told him to stop making inflammatory posts on social media, which saw him sued for defamation multiple times.

Meanwhile an unprecedented 360,000 #reservists have been called up – many of them dropping everything to fly back to Israel, even abandoning #honeymoons. But #Yair has remained in Miami, to the #irritation of some of the #troops. ‘Yair is enjoying his life at #MiamiBeach while I’m on the #front lines,’ one #soldier, a volunteer serving on Israel’s northern front, told The Times.

‘It’s us who are leaving our work, our families, our kids, to protect our families back home and the country, not the people who are responsible for this situation. Our brothers, our fathers, sons, are all going to the front line, but Yair is still not here. It does not help build trust in the leadership of the country.’

Israeli soldiers blast Benjamin Netanyahu’s son Yair, 32, for ‘abandoning’ them by staying in Miami while 360,000 reservists are called up to fight against Hamas, 24 October 2023

There should not be any discussion of one single #American soldier being sent to the #MiddleEast until every single #Jew #resident in the #USA between the ages of 18 and 40 has been sent there first. There is absolutely no reason to defend a #nation that literally refuses to defend itself.

And the fact that #Netanyahu’s own son is living the #high-life in Miami while his father #screeches about Hamas and Hezbollah should be sufficient cause to ignore all of the non-stop #propaganda. If it’s not their problem, it certainly isn’t ours.

Rallies by human rights and pro- #Palestinian activists around the world have called for an immediate ceasefire between #Israel and #Hamas. Many of those rallying have only good intentions at heart: they seek no more harm to innocents. They seek to protect the children of #Gaza, who have no responsibility for the crimes of members of their parents’ generation. They seek to mitigate the chances of an outbreak of a regional war that could cause further damage to even more innocents across Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt. They seek peace.

Seeing Israel as the stronger party, these well-intentioned activists have come to a simple conclusion: if only Israel stopped its military operations, a #ceasefire would emerge. #Hostages would eventually be returned. Lives would be saved. The problem is, as the leadership of the US and EU have already concluded, that is not #realistic. In past wars with Hamas, Israel has ceased fire and increased economic development for Gaza. Each time, Hamas used the time and money they siphoned off to build #weapons of war and aim those at both #Israelis and the #Palestinians who disagree with their #theocratic #dictatorship. Which is why the only way for the #Left, us #progressives, to live up to our morals and keep the high ground is to call for the immediate unconditional #surrender of Hamas.

Calling for the unconditional surrender of Hamas would prove that the Left cares about children of all countries, without ascribing to a hierarchy of human life. It avoids the moralistic laziness of publicly funded intellectuals such as Nicholas Kristof, among others, who essentially argue that a person planning to shoot you or your children has the same right to life as his victims. It avoids the abdication of responsibility by progressive leaders who forgive the war crimes of the party dedicated to carrying them out.(...)

Hamas depends on #international opinion far more than Israel. Hamas cannot exist without international aid, without international diplomatic air cover.

Those who care deeply about protecting the lives of #innocents need to think not just about today, but tomorrow.

Calling for a ceasefire would mean Israel #accepting a certain number of innocents dead by the hands of Hamas tomorrow in order to save innocent lives today. Calling for an alternative — for the unconditional surrender of Hamas — would solve this problem. Without Hamas in power, the threat to innocent lives on both sides drops precipitously. A ceasefire is made possible because the promise of future bloodshed is virtually eliminated.

There are those who would say that calling for Hamas’ unconditional surrender is unrealistic. That Hamas would not do it, and therefore the Left should focus on the only party who can be pressured by the international community: the democratic State of Israel. That, in my opinion, is worse than moralistic laziness. It is an abdication of morals, a cynical pragmatism that sacrifices Israeli innocent lives due to a lack of self-confidence that the Left should advocate for the truth. It is the path of least #resistance that leads towards the #victory of #evil over good.

Moreover, it is wrong. Because, again, Hamas depends on international opinion far more than Israel. Hamas cannot exist without international aid, without international diplomatic air cover. Without suitcases of cash coming from #Qatar with the active assistance of the #Netanyahu governments over the ages. If anyone can be influenced to stop the violence — if the Left’s progressive voice can have any impact whatsoever — it is by calling for the unconditional surrender of Hamas.

Because if Hamas emerged from its #bunkers, weapons down, hostages free, there would be no international justification for Israel to go to war, and Israel’s war aims would be met. Israelis who recognize now that there is no solution to the conflict that does not include a #political #transformation of the region would join with those #progressives who aided in freeing Gaza from Hamas to envision a new regional order. And there very well might just be peace
