#WTFWednesday "Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov instructed culture minister Musa Dadayev to make Chechen music 'conform to the Chechen mentality,' the statement continued. 'Borrowing musical culture from other peoples is inadmissible,' said Dadayev. The “conflict”, i.e. the armed invasion, started in southern #Ukraine when the Russian #army occupied #Crimea in February 2014. The Russian-inspired separatist #uprising in the east started later, in about a month.
It was clear to us from the beginning that Russia could not do any good in Ukraine. By 2014, a reactionary authoritarian regime had already been established in #Russia that denied all individual and social rights and brutally persecuted and destroyed all independent activity. Of course, we still have many questions about the Ukrainian state and the ruling class in Ukraine. But at least the anarchist movement, the socialist movement in Ukraine was able to operate relatively freely for some years. It suffices to say that throughout the existence of the independent Ukrainian state, there has not been a single political anarchist prisoner here. At the same time, many dozens of our comrades in Russia ended up in Russian prisons – guilty solely for their anarchist convictions. So, we were well aware of what #Putin did for libertarian ideas.
The #RKAS reaction was therefore irreversible: it was necessary to resist the Russian attack by all means.

Many wonder what has become of humanity as they witness the horrors of the invasion of #Ukraine and its worldwide consequences. In the 21st century, how is it possible to wage such a sadistic #war? Having achieved such progress in knowledge, #science, and #democracy, why is humanity reverting to the dark ages of global #violence and barbarism?
The long answer includes the corruptibility of Western #business, a lack of strategic instinct, the fundamental ineffectiveness of the #UN and other international institutions, the Western public’s ignorance of #history, and the resulting inability to anticipate and plan for the future.

In fact, the Russian Federation was rarely referred to as an empire before the 2008 invasion of #Georgia: indeed, it itself had remained unsure of exactly what it was for much of the preceding period, with various versions of ‘Russia’ – multicultural federation, nation-state, and, indeed, #empire — competing against each other for much of that period. And, besides, many in the #West were too committed to the ‘liberal’ Boris Yeltsin, and too taken in by Vladimir Putin’s demonstrative enthusiasm for the Global War on #Terror to turn the brutal — and very imperial — wars in #Chechnya, and indirect ‘divide-and-rule’ meddling elsewhere into a point of principle.
#Russia’s post-2014 aggressions against #Ukraine have now unequivocally pushed the dial. Calls for its breakup, and the self-determination of its 83 internationally recognised federal subjects and over 190 ethnic groups have also become more vocal of late.

In 2017, thanks to an investigation by independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, the world learned about the repressions #queer people face in the #NorthCaucasus. Stories of torture and kidnappings appeared on the homepage of the New York Times, and Vladimir #Putin had no choice but to comment. Soon, people began evacuating from #Chechnya. The majority of evacuees in the first wave were men, but #humanrights advocates have since seen an increase in the number of requests from women, not all of them #LGBT+. To learn more about the threats #women face in Chechnya, Meduza spoke to two human rights advocates and two Chechen women who managed to escape.

The consequences of the #war are already felt in #Russia. The #economy is set to contract as much as it did during the Soviet collapse. The war also ended many of the already weak civil liberties of Russia’s citizens, who now live under de facto martial law. Some have speculated that defeat will lead to a Russia without #Putin. Others argue that one-man-rule will continue with Putin at the helm, though weakened. Others have argued that Russia’s defeat, economic collapse, international pariah status and increased Russian #chauvinism will bring an end to the Russian Federation itself.
The possibility of a collapse of the Russian Federation along the lines of the Soviet collapse has been a feature of commentary on Russia since December 1991. Every now and again these views resurface, and Russia’s evident failures in #Ukraine have brought similar theories. Given the unprecedented scale of the war and the profound consequences it is to bring, the argument on Russia’s imminent collapse deserves scrutiny. Are the forces of #collapse already at play in Russia?

Bohdan is an airfield service employee at #Hostomel Airport, which was the site of heavy fighting at the very start of the war. For three weeks, he and his family lived in the basement of their apartment building, right across from the occupied airport. The building, which came under heavy fire at times, was occupied first by Chechen riot #police, then by an airborne assault unit from #Omsk. In mid-March, all of the basement’s inhabitants were forcibly taken to #Belarus. Bohdan told Meduza his story.

Russians plunder $5M #farm vehicles from #Ukraine -- to find they've been remotely disabled

source: https://edition.cnn.com/2022/05/01/europe/russia-farm-vehicles-ukraine-disabled-melitopol-intl/index.html

Some of the machinery was taken to a nearby village, but some of it embarked on a long overland journey to #Chechnya more than 700 miles away. The sophistication of the #machinery, which are equipped with #GPS, meant that its travel could be tracked. It was last tracked to the village of Zakhan Yurt in Chechnya.

The equipment ferried to Chechnya, which included combine harvesters -- can also be controlled remotely. "When the invaders drove the stolen harvesters to Chechnya, they realized that they could not even turn them on, because the harvesters were locked remotely," the contact said.

The #equipment now appears to be languishing at a farm near Grozny. But the contact said that "it seems that the hijackers have found consultants in Russia who are trying to bypass the #protection."

You may think that in this case it hits the right ones, but think about the following scenario: the world is facing a #starvation catastrophe and is in urgent need of tractors for #food production. But the farmer can't pay his debts at the moment. Then the tractors are deactivated regardless of whether people starve to death. Damn #DRM and damn #capitalism - why do people buy such #bullshit #technology?

Nearly six weeks ago, on February 24, 2022, #Russia launched a full-scale invasion of #Ukraine. From that moment, the #history of the Russian state’s past crimes ceased to be history, argues Meduza’s Ideas editor, Maxim Trudolyubov. Russia’s shared present once again includes a fight against the country’s own population, the trials of “enemies of the people,” deportations, occupations of neighboring countries, and “cleansing operations” in countries that were once part of the Soviet bloc. In the war against Ukraine, all of the Russian #state’s worst facets in its Imperial, Soviet, and post-Soviet guises have coalesced. This war is a living indictment that brings together all the things Russian #society can no longer ignore.
