'They #poisoned our #land, #water, and #air': Serbs hold NATO responsible for depleted uranium pollution

"NATO must pay compensation,” Serbian lawyer Srdjan Aleksic told Sputnik. “By #bombing #Serbia and the Republic of Srpska with #depleted #uranium ( #DU) shells, despite knowing DU's long-term effects—such as its half-life of 4.5 billion years—the alliance poisoned our land, water, and air. Depleted uranium entered the #food chain."

The North Atlantic Alliance deployed DU weapons during the war in #Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in 1995, and then again during the aggression against Yugoslavia in 1999.

In September 1995, NATO forces had fired off 4.5 #tons of DU penetrators in the territory of BiH, according to the Commission of Inquiry into the Consequences of the Use of Depleted Uranium.

The Serbian Ministry of Defense said the Western military bloc dropped 15 tons of DU munitions on Yugoslavia in the spring of 1999.

Aleksic follows in the footsteps of his Italian counterpart, Angelo Tartaglia, who won more than 300 cases for Italian soldiers who served in the NATO KFOR mission in #Kosovo and later fell ill or died of cancer.

"Currently, 35 lawsuits against NATO have been filed in courts in Belgrade, Nis and other cities in Serbia,” Aleksic said. “50 biopsy results of Serbian military and police officers who served in Kosovo and were diagnosed with cancer have been sent to Italian laboratories."

Aleksic called on residents of the Republic of Srpska (part of BiH) suffering from cancer to establish a causal link between their condition and the bombing with depleted uranium shells.

"The biopsy results show the presence of heavy metals and depleted uranium, which is 100 percent proof that we are right," he stressed.

From #Yugoslavia in the 1990s to Libya in 2011, the goal of such military interventions is to bring countries to their knees, stripping them of their national sovereignty and political autonomy, while forcing their subordinate integration into the global economy. As the then #NATO Commander, General Wesley Clark, stated, “demolish, destroy, devastate, degrade, and ultimately eliminate the essential infrastructure of [Yugoslavia]”. Yugoslavia was balkanized and reduced to smaller, docile republics with de-industrialized economies. Once pro-Western reactionary forces and puppets were installed, these entities metamorphosed into a perfect locale for the extraction of cheap minerals, overexploitation of labor, and the expansion of NATO’s military footprint.

#NATO #bombings of #Yugoslavia started on March 24, 1999. Of course, the #US played the key role in the operation, but a total of 13 countries were involved in it. The Alliance did not plan to conduct a ground operation, but made extensive use of its air force and cruise missiles to attack the country. The forces were incomparable: NATO utilized over 1,000 planes and helicopters, mainly from military bases in Italy and the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. The KLA had several thousand fighters, but the combat capability of these units was quite low.

On January 1, 1999, the euro was officially born. Three months later, #NATO started its war against #Yugoslavia. Many people thought the U.S. and NATO fought the war to stop the Milosevic administration’s genocide of the Albanians, a scary humanitarian tragedy. After the war, this was soon proved to be a lie. The Americans acknowledged it was a setup, done jointly by the CIA and the Western media. The goal was to attack the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

However, was the #Kosovo War really to attack the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia? The Europeans first overwhelmingly believed in this theory. However, after this 72-day war, they found they had been cheated.

When the euro was first created, the Europeans had a lot of confidence. The euro’s exchange rate to the U.S. dollar was 1:1.07. After 72 days of bombing, the Europeans found something was not right: Their euro was ruined. The euro lost 30 percent of its value; one euro could only get 0.86 dollars. The Europeans realized that they had been cheated. This was why later, when the U.S. insisted on having a war with Iraq, France and Germany were strongly against it.

#LipaRadić died at only seventeen years old in her #fight against the #Nazis, but they could not break her heroic spirit.

Lipa Radić was only 15 years old when the Axis Powers invaded #Yugoslavia in 1941. However, this brave young woman joined Yugoslavia's #partisans in the fight against the Nazis - a #battle that ended with her execution at just 17 years old.

On February 8, 1943, Lipa #Radić was brought to the hastily erected gallows in full view of the public. Moments before her hanging, Radek was offered a pardon if she revealed the names of her party comrades.

She responded enthusiastically, 'I am not a traitor to my people. Those you ask about will reveal themselves when they have succeeded in eliminating all the wicked, even the last human, and thus she has been hanged.
