MITM Instagram

image

Dear Lazyweb,

It has been over two years since I last asked this, so I'll ask again:

How do I mitmproxy the Instagram app, from macOS, iOS (real or emulated), or Android (emulated)?

Answer only if you've seen it work with your own eyeballs, please. No guessing. No "here's a 4 year old page that says it should work."

Please read the extensive comments on the previous post for all of the things that didn't work last time.

Last time, I was able to solve my problem by proxying the Flume app, but it hasn't been updated in 3 years and that binary now crashes at startup, even on macOS 10.13.

The proximate goal is to figure out what goes in a 'configure_to_story' request when adding a 'link' sticker, using the private instagram API.

Previously, previously.

Not smart but clever? The return of 'dumbphones'

... Ms West's decision to ditch her former smartphone two years ago was a spur of the moment thing. While looking for a replacement handset in a second-hand shop she was lured by the low price of a "brick phone".

Her current handset, from French firm MobiWire, cost her just £8. And because it has no smartphone functionality she doesn't have an expensive monthly data bill to worry about.

"I didn't notice until I bought a brick phone how much a smartphone was taking over my life," she says. "I had a lot of social media apps on it, and I didn't get as much work done as I was always on my phone." ...

And on cue, another article on the re-emergence of the dumb phone. I'd been engaged in a discussion with @tom grzyb and @Wayne Radinsky on the topic in this thread. The argument I made there was that various vendors are strongly incentivised to push increasingly user-hostile "smartphones" on the public for reasons which serve the vendors but not purchasers. It's nice to see some pushback.

When it comes to dumb phones, my principle issue isn't the phones but the system --- I don't want a device any idiot in the world can reach, but one that only the specifici idiots I wish to be able to reach me can. Phone spam has reached levels that the entire premise of universal direct-dial access is called into strong question.

And that's before the tracking and surveillance issues --- somewhat reduced with a dumb-phone, but you're still broadcasting your location whenever the device is on.

I would like a device to run interference between any more-trusted devices and the cellular network --- I'd rather have a tethered mobile data dongle than a SIM carded tablet or laptop. But I'd also prefer that mics and cameras be separable from my devices as well.

The problem of sorting out how to filter out all but selected call traffic is a major challenge, however.

XScreenSaver 6.02 out now

XScreenSaver 6.02 is out now, including iOS and Android.

Two new hacks this time, Marbling and Binary Horizon, plus a few minor updates.

Several of the old hacks have been re-enabled on Android, because it turns out that while they didn't work in the emulator, they do work on real Android hardware (of which I have none).

This release was built on macOS 11.6 instead of 10.14, so I think that means that it has native Apple M1 code in it -- though I doubt you'll notice any performance difference over the Rosetta2 emulation.

Also Apple completely changed how code signing works again, because hey, six more months have passed, it's clearly time for a redesign of the most incomprehensible part of their entire ecosystem, right? Is it better? No. No it is not, it's just differently awful. Again. Anyway, let me know if there are signing issues.

I also had to update Sparkle (the "Check for Updates" library), so hopefully auto-updates still work. Let me know.

About Marbling, the new one written by me. It started out fairly simple, but then it took the optimization train to crazytown. Here's the comment from the top of the source:

This generates a random field with Perlin Noise (Perlin's page, SIGGRAPH 2002 paper, Wikipedia entry), then permutes it with Fractal Brownian Motion (Wikipedia page, Book of Shaders, Shader Toy) to create images that somewhat resemble clouds, or the striations in marble, depending on the parameters selected and the colors chosen.

These algorithms lend themselves well to SIMD supercomputers, which is to say GPUs. Ideally, this program would be written in Shader Language, but XScreenSaver still targets OpenGL systems that don't support GLSL, so we are doing the crazy thing here of trying to run this highly parallelizable algorithm on the CPU instead of the GPU. This sort-of works out because modern CPUs have a fair amount of parallel-computation features on their side of the fence as well. (Generally speaking, your CPU is a Cray and your GPU is a Connection Machine, except that your phone does not typically require liquid nitrogen cooling and a dedicated power plant).

Update: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. A while back someone requested an Apple TV version of XScreenSaver, so I took a crack at it. There's a tvOS target in the Xcode project, but when you launch it, it never instantiates SaverRunner. I imagine there's some xib or storyboard problem, but I couldn't figure it out so I gave up. If someone can get me past that, I'll take another look. BTW, it turns out that one of the hurdles of porting iOS to tvOS is that tvOS doesn't have newfangled UI elements like checkboxes and sliders.

Best Smartphone Cameras in September: Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus: XDA Developers tests

For many the camera is their deciding factor of the choice of phone (yes most others tend to stick to a brand). It often just comes down to Samsung vs Apple, so this is interesting in that Xiaomi and OnePlus are also compared (both being very popular brands now).

But an important resource to also consult is DXOMARK which does a range of detailed standardised camera tests on most mobile phone cameras. I see they have published "The best ultra-premium smartphones for photography [Summer 2021]" where the Huawei P50 Pro comes out top in the benchmarking. But always also look at the type of test for the use-case you'd be using for your camera.

I DO IT BECAUSE I CAN.

I can live very happily without a cellphone, so I do. This is my primary telephone. A vintage landline with the most beautiful bell chime and excellent sound quality. It’s such a pleasure to hear it ring. I had an amazing green one, but it was damaged when it accidentally fell to the floor. They don’t make phones like this anymore. There are modern replicas, but the sound quality is very low. I have a backup replica.

The phone is usually in my bedroom. From time to time STATIC ELECTRICITY builds up in the room and it shows up on my receiver. For one thing, my bedroom is where I have all of my electronics, such as a PC, monitor, scanner, and printer.
The air also gets very dry which contributes to the static. The static electricity won’t harm me, but it can fry electronic components. The static on my receiver is a good warning that I have anti-static procedures to do. In the meantime, with its long cord, I park my phone in the bathroom sink. The small room turns into an echo chamber, making the sound of the ringing bell chime even more glorious. The room is static free, and the bathtub is filled with water which puts moisture into the air. Soon, there is no static on the receiver, and I can use the phone to test the static electricity in my bedroom.
