"Kostenloses Update" wird teuer werden
Vor 6 Jahren beim Start von Windows 10 hatte Microsoft noch beteuert, dass dies das letzte und beste Windows sein solle. Nun ist seit 3 Tagen der Wechsel zu Windows 11 möglich. Von den ca. 1,3 Milliarden Windows 10 Installationen werden mehrere hundert Millionen Nutzer schon bei der Prüfung iher Hardware an einem Update scheitern, wenn sie sich nicht ein neues Gerät zulegen wollen. Sie müssten sich weiter mit Windows 10 begnügen oder zu einem freien Betriebssystem wie Linux wechseln.
Bei allen anderen Nutzern steht einem "kostenlosen Update" nicht im Wege, aber für die Neukäufer müssen die Hersteller der Geräte je 25$ an Microsoft abdrücken - auch das schon ein Milliardengeschäft.
Das ist aber noch nicht alles, denn auch die Nutzer selbst werden animiert, doch etwas Geld in die Hand zu nehmen. So wird zukünftig das Kommunikationstool Microsoft Teams in Windows integriert sein, "um eine noch schnellere und einfachere Kontaktaufnahme mit Kollegen, Freunden und der Familie zu ermöglichen" - und wieder werden einige hundert Millionen Nutzer nicht um das darin integrierte kostenpflichtige Office365 Paket herumkommen - anstatt einfach das freie und kostelose Libre Office zu nutzen ...
Als Sahnehäubchen kommt noch das Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 dazu - und das ist ganz und gar nicht kostenlos!
Als erstes muss die Hardware den dazugehörigen Chip bereits besitzen - also recht neu sein, mindestens 2017 oder neuer, sonst geht das Update überhaupt niicht. Und dann soll dieser Chip zusammen mit Windows 11 dafür sorgen, dass sich keine "Cyberkriminellen" an dem Gerät und der Software zu schaffen machen.
Der Preis dafür ist die eigenen Privatsphäre, denn die auf den Nutzer registrierte Windows 11 Version wird zusammen mit dem "Trusted Module" genau prüfen und nachvollziehbar machen, was für Dummheiten der Mensch damit anstellt. Insbesondere das Lizenzmanagement der installierten Programme wird vom TPM genau unter die Lupe genommen. Da nach Aussagen von Microsoft "der TPM-Chip (unter anderem) ein sicheres Hochfahren der Rechner ermögliche", wäre es vorstellbar, dass je nach Geschäftsinteressen des Internetgiganten, der Rechner sich weigert, bei "unregistrierten Softwarepaketen" (wie z.B. freier Software) oder dem Anschluss von Geräten politisch unliebsamer Hersteller (wie z.B. Huawei) überhaupt zu arbeiten.
Deshalb können wir nur unseren Aufruf zur Nutzung freier Software zur Bewahrung unserer Privatsphäre und der Unabhängigkeit von den großen Internetfirmen zu bewahren. Linux bietet so viele Möglichkeiten und ein fast unbegrenztes Spektrum an Programmen für jeden Lebensbereich.

This sort of blustery rhetoric tends to be dismissed by #Americans in the aftermath of the #wars against #Arabs in the #MiddleEast, but it shouldn’t be when it comes from #China in response to various diplomatic #provocations by the #US State Department using #European #proxies.
Diplomatic measures alone are obviously not enough. If the US and the #Taiwan island change the names, they are suspected of touching the red line of China’s Anti-Secession Law, and the Chinese mainland will have to take severe #economic and #military #measures to combat the #arrogance of the US and the island of Taiwan. At that time, the mainland should impose severe economic sanctions on the island and even carry out an economic #blockade on the island, depending on the circumstances.
Militarily, Chinese mainland’s fighter #jets should fly over the island of Taiwan and place the island’s #airspace into the patrol area of the #PLA. There is a rational argument for the US #military provoking a #confrontation with China sooner rather than later, as the technological and production trends are clearly working in China’s favor. The Chinese are fully aware of these trends, which is why they have resolutely avoided military confrontation with the USA for decades. And that’s why it is so significant that at least some parties in China believe, and are willing to publicly declare, that the right time for resolving “the Taiwan question” is right now.

US Guided-missile destroyer #USS #Benfold trespassed in waters near the #Meiji-Reef in the #SouthChinaSea Wednesday without permission from China. The Chinese side mobilized aircraft and ships to warn off and expel the ship from the waters. In a 7th Fleet news release, the US side acknowledged that USS Benfold sailed within 12 nautical miles of Meiji Reef. But it said the warship was asserting navigational rights and freedoms. It claimed the Meiji reef “is not entitled to a territorial sea under international law,” and “the land reclamation efforts, installations, and structures” built on the reef “do not change this characterization under international law.”
China and the US don’t agree on the nature of the 12 nautical miles of Meiji Reef. Other different views exist worldwide. But international law doesn’t empower any country to challenge others’ sovereign claim with an intrusion by a warship. The US in particular has no right to do so given the fact that it has not ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Why? Because RPM had never properly checked revoked certificate key handling. Specifically, as Linux and lead RPM developer Panu Matilainen explained: "Revocation is one of the many unimplemented things in rpm's #OpenPGP support. In other words, you're not seeing a bug as such; it's just not implemented at all, much like expiration is not."
This is a bad #security #vulnerability but with open source you have the chance to find it and better late than never. You can't say this often enough: "Open source can increase your security but someone with experience has to do a #codereview. If no one checked the code then everything is possible :(

After having been under low-maintenance mode for almost 3 years, I've released the latest version 3.0.1 of the WP to diaspora plugin.
On this note, the project has come to a halt and is looking for new maintainers, since both lead developers aren't using it actively any more.
