Harris Baits Trump in Fiery Presidential Debate - WSJ

#US #politics

Vice President Kamala Harris put former President Donald Trump on the defensive in their first presidential debate, provoking him over crowd sizes at his rallies and his felony convictions—a sign of how the race has been upended with her ascent to the top of the ticket.

The debate Tuesday, which was hosted by ABC News at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, came after weeks of bickering over debate rules, which were set before Harris became the nominee. The prior debate, in late June, resulted in President Biden’s exit from the race after his halting debate performance against Trump. Harris, 59, the first woman of color to lead a presidential ticket, presented a starker contrast on the debate stage with Trump, 78, than the octogenarian Biden did.

Trump attacked Harris for the Biden administration’s record on immigration and the economy, and she was also pressed by the moderators on the many issues she has reversed positions on since her unsuccessful campaign for the 2020 Democratic nomination.

The race was essentially tied heading into Tuesday night’s event, polls showed, and it didn’t appear that the event would shake up the contest. Still some Republicans worried afterward about Trump’s performance, and Trump himself wavered on whether he would agree to another debate.

Unlike the Biden-Trump debate, this one began on a civilized note, with the vice president initiating a handshake with the former president. Their exchanges grew progressively more combative, with the candidates shaking their heads at each other’s answers. Trump at one point grew irritated when the vice president suggested that people leave his political rallies early out of boredom. He responded by attacking her rally turnout and touting his own, and by claiming that America is on the verge of World War III and its citizens are living in squalor under the Biden-Harris administration.

Trump, who at times meandered off topic, repeated an unfounded social-media claim—previously amplified by his running mate, Sen. JD Vance—that Haitian migrants are traveling to places like Springfield, Ohio, and “eating the dogs…They’re eating the pets of the people that live there and this is what’s happening in our country, and it’s a shame.”

Harris from the start contrasted her economic agenda and middle-class upbringing with Trump’s, calling the former president’s proposal to raise tariffs a “Trump sales tax” and criticizing his plans to extend tax cuts for the wealthy.

“I am actually the only person on this stage who has a plan that is about lifting up the middle class and working people of America,” she said, adding: “Donald Trump actually has no plan for you, because he’s more interested in defending himself than he is in looking out for you.”

Later in the debate, Trump was asked about his repeated criticism of the Affordable Care Act and whether he had an alternative plan to offer. “I have a concept of a plan,” he said.

The former president painted a picture of a nation that has plunged into chaos and despair since he left office. He aggressively pinned Harris to the Biden-era migrant crisis, reiterating his unsupported claim that the administration is allowing people from prisons, mental institutions and “insane asylums” to enter the country illegally.

“They’re coming in, and they’re taking jobs that are occupied right now by African-Americans and Hispanics and also unions,” Trump asserted. “They’re going in violently. These are the people that she and Biden let into our country, and they’re destroying our country.”

On abortion, Trump declined to say if he would veto a national ban on the procedure, though he said he wouldn’t support one. “It doesn’t matter, because this issue has now been taken over by the states,” Trump added.

Asked if she would support any restrictions on access to abortion, Harris said she would “absolutely support reinstating the protections of Roe v. Wade.”

Trump was asked to revisit previous comments he made questioning Harris’s racial identity, saying, “I don’t care” how she identifies. In July, he suggested that Harris, whose mother is originally from India and whose father emigrated from Jamaica, “turned Black.” On Tuesday, he said, “Whatever she wants to be is OK with me,” but added that he read somewhere that she isn’t Black.

Harris responded that it is a tragedy that Trump has used “race to try to divide” the country.

Although the candidates agreed to muting the mics of their opponents while they were speaking as part of the debate rules, Harris could be heard saying, “Come on,” as Trump questioned whether Harris would restrict abortions at all.

The idea that women would ask for abortions after a full pregnancy term, Harris said, is “insulting to the women of America.”

Harris reiterated her support for a bipartisan Senate border deal negotiated earlier this year that was blocked by Republicans after Trump asked members of his party to oppose it. That bill would have given the president the authority to stop processing asylum seekers if crossings rose too high. At the same time, that measure would have increased legal immigration to the U.S. “He’d prefer to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem,” Harris said of Trump.

After repeated attempts by Trump to tie her to Biden, Harris reminded Trump: “You’re not running against Joe Biden, you’re running against me.”

But the former president continued to press Harris on why she hadn’t enacted any of her policies during the current administration: “I just ask one simple question, why didn’t she do it?” he asked.

Trump dismissed the moderator’s suggestion that he should have acted differently on Jan. 6, 2021, when a mob of his supporters attacked the Capitol. He suggested the rioters had been prosecuted unfairly.

Harris, who was at the Capitol on Jan. 6, said Trump’s response to the attack wasn’t an “isolated situation,” bringing up incidents when the former president has refused to condemn hate groups. “For everyone watching who remembers Jan. 6, I say, we don’t have to go back,” she said.

Trump continued to assert that the 2020 election was rigged against him and brushed off the fact that dozens of court challenges failed, and reviews, recounts and audits in battleground states all affirmed Biden’s win.

“There’s so much proof—all you have to do is look at it,” he said. “Our elections are bad.”

Harris used Trump’s continued false allegations about the 2020 election to make her case that he didn’t have the temperament to be president. “Donald Trump was fired by 81 million people, so let’s be clear about that, and clearly he is having a very difficult time processing that,” she said.

Citing her experience as a prosecutor and former attorney general of California, she warned against re-electing someone who is a convicted criminal and cited Trump’s repeated state and federal indictments as indications that he would manipulate the power of the presidency to further his personal ambitions.

The two candidates also exchanged heated accusations about foreign policy—particularly the continuing war between Israel and Hamas. “She hates Israel,” Trump accused. “If she’s president, I believe that Israel will not exist within two years from now.”

“I have my entire career and life supported Israel and the Israeli people,” Harris responded. She also said that in her travels overseas, “world leaders are laughing at Donald Trump,” adding: “He’s trying to again divide and distract from reality, which is very well known, that Donald Trump is weak and wrong on national security and foreign policy,” she said.

Trump repeatedly refused to answer whether he wanted Ukraine to win its war against Russia. He touted his ability to negotiate a peace deal between the two countries and asserted that Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to invade Ukraine because he doesn’t respect Biden. Trump added the hypothetical assertion that Putin wouldn’t have gone through with the invasion if he were in office.

Harris said the Ukraine war would end quickly under Trump because he would “just give it up” to Putin, who, she told Trump, “would eat you for lunch.”

The vice president also defended Biden’s decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan and said that Trump had cut a bad deal with the Taliban.

The vice president has offered herself as the change candidate and has made a subtle attempt to distinguish herself from Biden on certain issues while also celebrating their joint accomplishments since taking office in January 2021.

Her performance Tuesday night quickly earned her one of the most coveted endorsements—that of megastar Taylor Swift, who posted on Instagram that she would be voting for the vice president.

Trump, who was thrown off by Biden’s exit, has struggled to form a consistent line of attack against Harris even as polls show the race essentially tied.

It remains unclear whether Harris and Trump will have another debate, given how contentious negotiations over the terms of the event were, although both candidates have stressed their view that presidential debates are an important part of the electoral process.

Trump’s campaign previously said it wanted more debates, but Trump said Wednesday morning on Fox & Friends that he felt “less inclined” to have another debate because he thought the ABC moderators were biased.

Quentin Fulks, Harris’s principal deputy campaign manager, said on CNN that Harris was “open to a debate in October. But if I were Donald Trump, I would not want to debate Kamala Harris.”

The vice presidential contenders—Vance and Democratic nominee Tim Walz—are scheduled to debate Oct. 1.

Trump vs Harris is just a front - UnHerd

#US #politics

Until the Seventies, conventions continued to play a central role in bringing party groups together. Delegates were considered ambassadors from around the country, representing both local political machines and rural courthouse gangs. To secure the nomination, the winning candidate had to make concessions to these various party factions, even if it meant choosing a running mate from a different wing of the party.

All of this, however, is now ancient history, in no small part thanks to two structural changes: the rise of party primaries and the deregulation of campaign finance.

Democracy is not a valid system. You can vote, but if you vote the wrong way, something will happen and you’ll end up with the same people you had before. We need to end democracy. It’s a totally failed system. Unless you’re Jewish or like, an arms contractor, this is a system that has failed you.

We’ve said it from the beginning: there is no actual way for AfD to take over the government. Germany is militarily occupied by the United States, and they’re not going to let some party they don’t like take over the government.

Cold War Canada: Ongoing state support for East European émigré groups with deep fascist roots

“Manufacturing Consent”

... for fascism

“If the triumph of communism

is the worst imaginable result,

the support of fascism abroad

is justified as a lesser evil.”

In 1988, just before the destruction of the USSR, #Herman and #Chomsky published a theory on the use of mass media "to inculcate individuals with the values, beliefs, and codes of behavior" that "integrate them into the institutional structures of the larger society." (p.1.) The media’s "societal purpose," they explained, is to "defend the economic, social, and political agenda of privileged groups that dominate the domestic society and the state." (p.298.)

This propaganda model focused on five thematic "filters" of the mass media:

1) size, concentrated ownership, owner wealth and profit orientation...;

2) advertising as primary income source ...;

3) reliance... on info. provided by government, business and "experts" funded and approved by these primary sources and agents of power;

4) "flak" as a means of disciplining the media;

5) "anticommunism" as a national religion and control mechanism. (p.2.)

With the "specter" of communism as "the ultimate evil," the media created a "cultural milieu in which anticommunism is the dominant religion." By "elevating opposition to communism to a first principle of Western ideology and politics," the media used it as a "potent" "political-control mechanism." This "fragment[ed] the left and labor movements" and sidelined "social democrats" accused of being "too soft on communists." While many Cold War "liberal" progressives supported US-led wars justified with anticommunist pretexts, "others lapsed into silence, paralyzed by the fear of being tarred with charges of infidelity to the national religion." (p.29.)

By stirring "anti-Communist fervor ... the demand for serious evidence in support of claims of ‘communist’ abuses is suspended, and charlatans can survive as evidential sources." These "charlatans" take "center stage" as media "experts" and "remain there even after exposure as highly unreliable, if not downright liars." (p.30.)

"U.S. President Joe #Biden's administration is engaged in urgent discussions with Congress to allow it to use up $6 billion in military aid for Ukraine before a Sept. 30 deadline," Reuters reports, citing a number of sources familiar with the situation

"The effort comes at a high-risk moment for Ukrainian forces, who are advancing into #Russia's #Kursk region while trying to hold off Russian forces threatening the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk," the publication writes.

Most of the $7.8 billion allocated in April has not been used, and "officials scrambling to find a way to keep the remaining $6 billion from expiring as the Sept. 30 deadline - the end of the 2024 fiscal year - approaches".

Meanwhile, congressional sources told #Reuters that the flow of #weapons to #Ukraine has slowed this year.

A True Shock? Economist Jeffrey Sachs Reveals Secret at Heart of U.S.-Russian Relations

It seems that the interest in #peace is secondary. Greed for power and resources is more important. Therefore, there will be #war as long as the warmongers face no real resistance and are strong enough to stir up trouble.

Leading US diplomats, led by the great stateman-scholar George Kennan, warned at the time that the NATO enlargement would lead to disaster: “The view, bluntly stated, is that expanding #NATO would be the most fateful error of American policy in the entire post-cold-war era.” So, it has proved.

Here is not the place to revisit all of the foreign policy disasters that have resulted from US arrogance towards #Russia, but it suffices here to mention a brief and partial chronology of key events. In 1999, NATO bombed #Belgrade for 78 days with the goal of breaking #Serbia apart and giving rise to an independent #Kosovo, now home to a major NATO base in the #Balkans. In 2002, the US unilaterally withdrew from the #Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty over Russia’s strenuous objections. In 2003, the US and NATO allies repudiated the UN Security Council by going to war in #Iraq on false pretenses. In 2004, the US continued with NATO enlargement, this time to the Baltic States and countries in the Black Sea region (Bulgaria and Romania) and the Balkans. In 2008, over Russia’s urgent and strenuous objections, the US pledged to expand NATO to #Georgia and #Ukraine.

Not from The Onion: US Attorney General Merrick #Garland announces that the Department of Justice has filed criminal indictments against six senior Hamas officials, including Yahya Sinwar, for "conspiring to kill American citizens" and "using weapons of mass destruction" following the death of six hostages in the #Gaza Strip, one of whom was an American dual citizen.

Yemen news via Russian sources: Ansar Allah movement published details of yesterday's attacks on merchant ships: two oil tankers were targeted.

▪️According to the spokesman of the Yemeni Houthis, General Yahya Sarie, the vessel MV BLUE LAGOON I, carrying about 2 million barrels of oil, was attacked with two ballistic missiles west of the port of As-Salif.

This is almost twice as much as the Greek-owned MV DELTA SOUNION, which the Yemenis attacked on August 21 and which is still burning.

▪️West of the port of Al-Hudaydah, a drone strike hit the Saudi-flagged and Greek-operated ship MV AMJAD.

🔻Both tankers were damaged, but the extent of the damage is still unknown. The information about the successful #AnsarAllah attacks is confirmed by the US Central Command.

Meanwhile, according to the #US agency, work is underway in the #RedSea to prevent an environmental disaster due to the oil spill from the damaged MV DELTA SOUNION.

Specific Authors of the Ukrainian War

In the early 80s, our ambassador Alexander #Yakovlev (a classic example of the genre - bed and whiskey) was recruited in Canada. In 1985, he became Mikhail #Gorbachev's chief adviser, and it was through Yakovlev that the last General Secretary was instilled with a plan to reform the USSR economy. In essence, the plan was very simple - to get rid of the superfluous Union republics and then, with the help of the USA, to become a prosperous capitalist state. It was this plan that Gorbachev proposed to Ronald #Reagan at his very first meeting.

And here is the first remark - historians will probably argue endlessly whether Gorbachev knew or not that this plan was foisted on him by the Americans themselves, or was simply a fool. Personally, I think that he knew and openly and purposefully destroyed the Union. Because this plan included not only the collapse of the country's rather strong economy under the guise of reforms, but also the bringing to power of outright renegades - #Yeltsin and the group of American advisers who stood behind him, who came to "help" the Soviet Union.

...

Specifically, for the deployment of military operations in Ukraine, a number of contractors were involved, both already well-identified Russophobes and specially established ones at that. Here, we will only list some of them and, accordingly, their main sponsors:

The Atlantic Council- Sponsored by SAAB, Raytheon, and Lockheed. This is the director of the Ukrainian project. Their main lobbyist, by the way, is the same Alperovich who recently authored "The World on the Brink."

The Center for Analysis of European Policy (established in 2005) - Sponsored specifically by Lockheed, BAE System, Bel Helicopter, and Raytheon, and was designed to promote the agenda in the media.

The German Marshall Fund- Sponsored by the Ministry of Defense of Latvia, Airbus, Boeing, and Raytheon. The main lobbyist is still the same William Kristol, and the former president of Estonia and our old enemy McFaul are also involved.

The Institute for the Study of War (2007) - Sponsored by Raytheon and General Dynamics Dean Corporation. The director of the institute is Kimberly Kagan (wife of Victoria Nuland's husband's brother).

These are just a few of the contractors that, by various estimates, handled up to $7 billion in U.S. government and private spending on military corporations to fuel the Ukrainian war. Much of that money ended up in the pockets of the #Nuland family and the #Kagan clan, who are connected to the #Clinton and #Obama families.
