Une autre fois, Maman m'emmena au jardin d'enfants sous prétexte de profiter du beau soleil.
Je maugréais en chemin : ce n'était pas la peine de marcher jusqu'à là-bas si je n'avais même pas le droit de jouer avec les enfants. Le soleil, je le voyais très bien de la fenêtre de ma chambre.
Maman, apparemment de bonne humeur, me répondit d'un ton léger :
« On verra bien ce qui va se passer. »
Ce qui se passa ce jour-là dans le jardin d'enfants était peu ordinaire : Maman adressa la parole à une dame qui se trouvait là, comme si c'était son amie, genre :
« Quel beau temps on a, aujourd'hui ! »
La dame lui répondit sur le même ton. Pourtant, elles ne se connaissaient pas. Ce n'était vraiment pas le genre de Maman de discuter avec des étrangers. Je n'y comprenais rien.
Maman demanda à la dame si elle voulait bien que je jouasse avec sa fille. Jouasse ? Tout le monde le fut, apparemment. La dame demanda à sa fille de m'emmener jouer avec elle.
La fille me prit par la main et m'emmena non pas sur le tourniquet mais sur le grand rocher qui était derrière les jeux parce qu'elle voulait jouer à se promener… m'enfin bon… en plus, étant moi-même une fille, j'aurais préféré rencontrer un garçon… m'enfin bon… en plus, je ne la trouvais pas très belle… m'enfin bon… en plus, je ne la trouvais pas très intelligente… m'enfin bon… je voulais bien quand même faire sa connaissance et la suivre dans ses jeux… si ça pouvait faire plaisir à Maman.
Son jeu préféré, c'était parler, parler beaucoup. Moi, je lui posais des questions. C'est comme ça que j'appris qu'elle venait souvent au jardin d'enfants et qu'elle y rencontrait toujours du monde : un jour moi, un jour quelqu'un d'autre… elle jouait indifféremment avec tous les enfants qu'elle trouvait sur son rocher. Sa mère ne s'y opposait jamais ; elle était libre.
Ça, c'était les réponses à mes premières questions. Après, ses réponses devinrent vaseuses ; même, elle ne me répondit plus du tout. Elle parlait, elle parlait beaucoup mais ne disait que des choses vides, répétait plein de fois les mêmes choses.
Elle parlait fort. Ça, oui. Était-ce seulement à moi qu'elle parlait ? Elle semblait poursuivre des aventures imaginaires dans lesquelles je ne figurais pas.
Quand je parvins à la sortir de ses rêveries, elle me dit :
« T'as qu'à y aller, sur ton tourniquet. Moi, je suis celle qui joue sur le rocher. Quand tu auras envie de jouer à mon jeu, tu reviendras. »
Elle avait raison. J'aurais volontiers suivi cette stratégie mais avec ma mère derrière, je n'osais pas m'y risquer. Je ne voulais même pas retourner auprès d'elle pour lui demander si j'avais le droit d'aller sur le tourniquet. Si c'était pour qu'elle me refît le coup de la fois précédente, non merci !
Ma mère avait voulu que je devinsse amie avec la fille du rocher. Pourquoi ? Je n'en savais rien mais il fallait que j'y parvinsse si je ne voulais pas qu'elle me traitât encore de sauvage et qu'elle m'obligeât à rester assise avec elle, sur son banc.

Noting his highly-conditioned and narrowly-scoped criteria (arrests are ongoing, and few to date), data obtained directly from Parler puts multiple members directly at the scene of the coup:
At least several users of the far-right social network Parler appear to be among the horde of rioters that managed to penetrate deep inside the U.S. Capitol building and into areas normally restricted to the public, according to GPS metadata linked to videos posted to the platform the day of the insurrection in Washington.
The data, obtained by a computer hacker through legal means ahead of Parler’s shutdown on Monday, offers a bird’s eye view of its users swarming the Capitol grounds after receiving encouragement from President Trump — and during a violent breach that sent lawmakers and Capitol Hill visitors scrambling amid gunshots and calls for their death. Greenwald's argument hinges on emotion, insinuation, invective, a completely unfounded premise, an absolute absence of evidence, and no consideration of alternative explanations: an overwhelmingly plausible ongoing law enforcement and national security operation, likely under sealed or classified indictments or warrants, in the face of ongoing deadly sedition lead by the President of the United States himself, including against the person of his own vice president and credible threats against the President-Elect and Inauguration.
Such an legal action is, of course, extraordinarily difficult to prove, and I cannot prove it. A key clue for me, however, is the defection not just of Apple, Google, Amazon, Facebook, Stripe, and other tech firms, but of Parler's legal counsel, who would have to be an exceptionally stealth-mode startup to fit Greenwald's, or other's, "it's the tech monopolists" narrative. I've tempered my degree of assurance and language ("plausible" rather than "probable"). Time will tell. But a keen and critical mind such as Grenwald's should at least be weighing the possibility. He instead seems bent only on piking old sworn enemies, with less evidence or coherence than I offer.
This is the crux of Greenwald's argument. It's all he's got:
On Thursday, Parler was the most popular app in the United States. By Monday, three of the four Silicon Valley monopolies united to destroy it.
I'm no friend of the tech monopolists myself. The power demonstrated here does concern me, greatly. I've long railed against Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple, among other tech monopolists. Largely because as monopolies they are power loci acting through their occupation of a common resource, outside common control, and not serving the common weal. Hell: Facebook, Google (YouTube), Reddit, and Twitter played a massive role in creating the current fascist insurrection in the US, along with even more enthusiastic aid and comfort from traditional media, across the spectrum. Damage that will take decades to repair, if ever.
But, if my hypothesis is correct, the alternative explanation would bet he opposite of this: the state asserting power over and through monopolies in the common interest, in support of democratic principles, for the common weal. And that I can support.
I don't know that this is the case. I find it curious that I seem to be the only voice suggesting it. Time should tell.
And after this is over, yes, Silicon Valley, in its metonymic sense standing for the US and global tech industry, has to face its monopoly problem, its free speech problem (in both sincere and insincere senses), its surveillance problem (capitalist, state, criminal, rogue actor), its censorship problem, its propaganda problem (mass and computational), its targeted manipulation adtech problem, its trust problem, its identity problem, its truth and disinformation problems, its tax avoidance problem, its political influence problem.
