Mayan beekeeper who fought Monsanto GMO plantings in Mexico wins Goldman Environmental Prize

Leydy Pech, a Mayan beekeeper who led a coalition that stopped #Monsanto from planting genetically modified crops in seven states in southern #Mexico, was recently awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize.

Pech, a 55-year-old Indigenous woman from the state of Campeche in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, works with a rare, stingless, native bee species (Melipona beecheii) that has been cultivated by the Mayans since pre-Columbian times. Beekeeping is a key part of Mayan culture, and quite important economically. In Campeche, an estimated 25,000 families, many Indigenous, rely on the honey trade for their livelihoods, and Mexico is the sixth-largest producer of honey worldwide.

In 2012, after failing to consult with local and Indigenous communities, the Mexican government granted Monsanto permission to plant GMO Roundup Ready soybeans in seven Mexican states, including Campeche. Pech formed a coalition of NGOs, beekeepers and activists who filed a lawsuit against the Mexican government. Her coalition advocated for research into the effects of the GMO plots, resulting in evidence that GMO soy pollen was present in local honey, and that glyphosate, a chemical best known from the widely used pesticide Roundup, was found in the water supply and urine of people in Pech’s hometown of Hopelchén.

Today is V-Day. It's a great day for many but not so great for others. The campaign to end violence against all women, gender expansive people, girls and the planet began with the Vagina Monologues 25 years ago with a call to action launched this day in 2012 by One Billion Rising. 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. Consider this day a continued call to action. Take a stand with us not against us.

"V-Day has unleashed vast grassroots, anti-violence work on college campuses and in communities – visionary work that has been survivor-led and focused, all the while revealing the power of art and activism to change culture and systems. V-Day has inspired women, men and communities all over the world and raised collective consciousness about how violence and gender intersect. The Vagina Monologues and other artistic works curated by V-Day have been performed across the world by local activists, survivors and artists, raising over $120 million dollars for grassroots anti-violence groups, rape crisis centers, domestic violence shelters, and safe houses, shattering taboos and changing the way activists make change in their communities. V-Day’s campaigns include the City of Joy, a revolutionary center for women survivors of gender violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has graduated over 1900 women leaders; One Billion Rising, the largest mass action to demand an end to violence against women in history; and now, to kick off V25, Voices – an audioplay centered around the voices of Black women across the African Diaspora; and V’s new memoir, #Reckoning."

Attempting to “manage” an endless conflict is like managing a preschool of pyromaniacs. There will be fire. The only question is when.

In his Letter from Birmingham Jail, MLK wrote: " I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate [...] who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."
Last week was just another reminder of how dangerous it is to wait for “the right time” to end occupation. There are those who are happy to end the occupation in theory - just not now. Instead they’re more invested in making sure right-wing folks feel comfortable showing up to protest for “democracy.”
There won’t be justice for Israelis without Justice for Palestinians - a truth Israeli moderates need to understand. There is no democracy with occupation, and ignoring the occupation has dire consequences. We must remember this, especially now, as Ben-Gvir and the new ultranationalist government play with fire.
At every protest, moderate Israelis demand we ignore justice for Palestinians. They think this conflict we ‘manage’ is so perfect, so controlled, that it can wait – until it explodes in all our faces.

France’s eight major trade unions united for the first time in 12 years to combat government proposals to raise the retirement age to 64.

Schools closed and transport systems were thrown into chaos on Jan. 19 after France’s eight major unions joined forces to call a multisector strike against President Emanuel Macron’s proposed pension reforms. The unions and left-wing political parties are calling for the immediate withdrawal of the reforms, which would raise France’s retirement age from 62 to 64. This video is part of a special Workers of the World series on the cost of living crisis in Europe.

As we head into the new year 2023, I thought about a man who has been an influencer of so many careers and the evolution of music throughout his entire career. He's 81 years young and on his farewell your set to end in January 2023. Active on stage since 1955 through the early days of Motown, into the civil rights movement, the push to end the Vietnam war, the Woodstock era, merging rock and jazz rejecting the Motown box they tried to put him in.

On many record labels as Parliament, then Funkadelic, and eventually P-Funk and his own label. He was the champion of upcoming youth artists powering the evolution of funk, hip-hop, and rap with cross-overs into pop If you haven't guessed it yet, this man is none other than George Clinton, the godfather of funk.

Here is an interesting documentary worth the watch! Be inspired by the evolution of P-Funk from the Mothership to One Nation Under a Groove and more. I hope to have his energy and courage continuing to his age and beyond - speak truth to power in your own way! 2023 and 2024 are both election years of consequence - let his farewell tour be your beginning or continuation of the journey!
