I “started” out on smartphones with a jailbroken iPhone 3 and then moved through various Android phones (being burnt by a Google Nexus 6P), often rooting them for enhanced functionality, before I moved back to an iPhone 12 Pro. The reason I moved back to an iPhone were that it had really improved a lot with regards to allowing custom keyboards, browsers, now had real copy-and-paste, widgets, etc. I was finding that around 2020 it was no longer really necessary to root or jailbreak phones to get what you needed. Also my bank was restricting access for their app to non-rooted phones only, and Magisk was no longer cloaking the rooting very well.
Wanting an Apple Watch (to replace wearing a Fitbit and a smartwatch, and Android Wear watches were a bit dismal) meant basically needing an iPhone to setup the Watch and take full advantage of it, and I really do like the fact that iPhones get a good 7 years of software OS updates.
But coming from an Android world meant painfully realising that the Truecaller anti-spam app I used (and all others that I also tested over a year) has no control over the phone dialler so it is severely crippled, and seriously, Apple’s Shortcuts comes nowhere near what Tasker offers on Android. Luckily Airtags were launched and that solved one problem that Shortcuts could not do ie. notify me if I’d forgotten a WiFi connected device behind. Apart from having to rebuy a few apps, the iPhone has been really slick, well built, stable, and has a very good camera. The spam calls though have been getting to me, and the fact that some ham radio apps are not available for it.
So I decided about two weeks back to buy a cheap, good value for money, Android phone for the ham radio apps. The Samsung A13 is actually an incredible bargain at under R3,000 ZAR (about $172) with 4GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage with an SD card, dual SIM, radio, and a 5,000 mAh battery. It’s camera is noticeably not as good as the iPhone and also does not seamlessly zoom through the lenses. It is not close to the same league as the iPhone.
BUT it runs Tasker, it runs Truecaller oh so well with 3x the functionality that the iOS would allow, my Call Recorder apps work again so no need to carry around a PR-200 recorder around, the battery lasts for two real days of use, and I could remove the SIM from my mobile hotspot, and put this in the 2nd SIM slot so that I no longer have to carry a mobile hotspot around (all my other devices connect to the Samsung’s Mobile Hotspot, and Tasker automatically activates that when I leave home, and disables it when I return).
So whilst it can take OK photos, I would really take the iPhone out if I want to record really good photos. The difference is actually noticeable. Interestingly the Apple Watch works basically 100% as long as the iPhone sits at home with WiFi connectivity. The Watch connects to the WiFi hotspot on the Samsung phone and can do Walkie Talkie, iMessages, Apple Pay, etc and will sync Health data when I get home (if it is not doing it via WiFi). It also has NFC, which the Samsung does not have. What about the different phone number the iPhone now has? Well actually not a problem as iMessage etc all sync on your Apple ID and not the actual phone number, so my three iMessage contacts are oblivious really to the number change.
A bonus on the Samsung side was also to find that their software has really progressed with any app being able to go picture-in-a-picture mode, split screen, digital wellbeing, gestures, eye comfort, focus modes, nearby share, dual messenger profiles, and lots more. Phones are now getting good enough to be able to live with the lower end models. To be honest all I really get from paying 6x more is a way better camera and some more speed.
So when this Samsung is up for replacement I’m going to have a long hard think about what next. I’m really not sure I’ll be paying so much again for another iPhone. For that price I could by 6 of these Samsung A13’s. I’ll likely keep a “cheap” iPhone to supplement the Watch, but by then I may also give serious thought to what the Samsung or Pixel watch is doing.
For me it will come down to the camera, dual SIM now (don’t want to lug a mobile data hotspot around again), anti-spam phone call management, and pairing with a good health tracking Watch. For others the list may well be different. iMessage is “nice” but I have about 3% of the people I’m in regular contact with, who actually have it, so a vendor specific messenger is not a draw card for me.
It was Apple’s Watch that actually drew me back into Apple, but I’m now already finding the few limitations too stifling again. I can say the limitations are far fewer now, but Apple’s philosophy is one of control and quality, and that does jar a bit on me liking flexibility and features…
My next choice is probably due only in about 2 to 3 years time, and it will be an interesting month of studies, comparisons, and short-listings before I decide anything. But what I do know now, is I’m taking a slightly different approach. The two phone ecosystems are very similar in some regards, but also differ very fundamentally in others. It does often come down to the philosophy that fits best for each person.
PS: Sadly the real detail of the linked photo is a bit lost with compression and resizing, but take my word for it the colour and finer sharpness of the iPhone photo is better when you zoom into both images.

The world has about 10 weeks of wheat supplies stored as Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its fourth month, a food insecurity expert told the UN.
Sara Menker, the CEO of agriculture analytics firm Gro Intelligence, told the UN Security Council that the Russia-Ukraine war was not the cause of a food security crisis but "simply added fuel to a fire that was long burning."
Menker said droughts across the world are contributing to declining wheat resources. Menker said global food supplies are also being impacted by climate change and fertilizer shortages.
"We currently only have 10 weeks of global consumption sitting in inventory around the world. Conditions today are worse than those experienced in 2007 and 2008," she said.
Menker said estimates from official government agencies from across the world show that wheat inventories at 33% of annual consumption, but added that models created by Gro Intelligence show that the figure may actually be closer to 20%, a level not seen since 2007 and 2008.
"It is important to note that the lowest grain inventory levels the world has ever seen are now occurring while access to fertilizers is highly constrained," she said. "And drought in wheat growing regions around the world is the most extreme it's been in over 20 years. Similar inventory concerns also apply to corn and other grains."

...Another existential threat to the vast fortunes of the early oiligarchs was to require an even greater effort at social engineering: public transportation.
By the end of World War I, private car ownership was still a relative rarity; only one in ten Americans owned a car. Rail was still the transportation of choice for the vast majority of the public, and city-dwellers in most major cities relied on electric trolley networks to transport them around town. In 1936, General Motors formed a front company, "National City Lines," along with Firestone Tire and Standard Oil of California, to implement a process of "bustitution": scrapping streetcars and tearing up railways to replace them with GM's own buses running on Standard Oil-supplied diesel. The plan was remarkably successful.
As historian and researcher F. William Engdahl notes in "Myths, Lies and Oil Wars":
"By the end of the 1940s, GM had bought and scrapped over one hundred municipal electric transit systems in 45 cities and put gas-burning GM buses on the streets in their place. By 1955 almost 90% of the electric streetcar lines in the United States had been ripped out or otherwise eliminated."
The cartel had been careful to hide their involvement in National City Lines, but it was revealed to the public in 1946 by an enterprising retired naval lieutenant commander, Edwin J. Quinby. He wrote a manifesto exposing what he called "a careful, deliberately planned campaign to swindle you out of your most important and valuable public utilities — your Electric Railway System." He uncovered the oiligarchs' stock ownership of National City Lines and its subsidiaries and detailed how they had, step by step, bought up and destroyed the public transportation lines in Baltimore, Los Angeles, St. Louis and other major urban centres.
Quinby's warning caught the attention of federal prosecutors, and in 1947 National City Lines was indicted for conspiring to form a transportation monopoly and conspiring to monopolize sales of buses and supplies. In 1949, GM, Firestone, Standard Oil of California and their officers and corporate associates were convicted on the second count of conspiracy. The punishment for buying up and dismantling America's public transportation infrastructure? A $5,000 fine. H. C. Grossman, who had been the director of Pacific City Lines when it oversaw the scrapping of LA's $100 million Pacific Electric system, was fined exactly $1.
Unsurprisingly, GM and its associates did not remain in the doghouse for long. In 1953, President Eisenhower appointed Charles Wilson, then the President of General Motors, as Secretary of Defense. Wilson, with Francis DuPont of the Rockefeller-connected DuPont family as Chief Administrator of Federal Highways, oversaw one of the largest public works projects in American history: the creation of the interstate highway system. With a war-era excise tax on train tickets still in place and federally funded highways and airports providing cheaper alternatives, rail travel declined a startling 84% between 1945 and 1964.
This social engineering paid off well for Standard Oil and its growing list of petrochemical associates. In the two-and-a-half decades after the outbreak of World War II, vehicle production in Detroit almost tripled, from 4.5 million cars a year in 1940 to over 11 million in 1965. As a result, sales of refined gasoline over the same period rose 300%.

Entomological warfare is a type of biological warfare that uses insects to transmit diseases. The US military has been funding research using insects to transmit bioweapons in US run biolaboratories in the former Soviet Union state of Georgia. The Pentagon has allegedly performed such entomological tests in Georgia and Russia.

2014 The Lugar Center was equipped with an insect facility and launched a project “Raising Awareness about Barcoding of Sand Flies in Georgia and Caucasus”. The project covered a larger geographic area outside of Georgia – Caucasus. In 2014-2015 Phlebotomine sand fly species were collected under another project “Surveillance Work on Acute Febrile Illness” and all (female) sand flies were tested to determine their infectivity rate. A third project, also including sand flies collection, studied the characteristics of their salivary glands.
As a result Tbilisi has been infested with biting flies since 2015. These biting insects live indoors, in bathrooms, all year long, which was not the typical behaviour of these species in Georgia previously (normally the Phlebotomine fly season in Georgia is exceptionally short – from June to September). Local people complain of being bitten by these newly appeared flies while naked in their bathrooms. They also have a strong resistance to cold and can survive even in the sub-zero temperatures in the mountains
Biting Flies in Dagestan, Russia
Since the start of the Pentagon project in 2014 flies similar to those in Georgia have appeared in neighboring Dagestan (Russia). According to local people, they bite and cause rashes. Their breeding habitats are house drains.
Flies from the Phlebotomine family carry dangerous parasites in their saliva which they transmit through a bite to humans. The disease, which these flies carry, is of high interest to the Pentagon. In 2003 during the US invasion of Iraq American soldiers were severely bitten by sand flies and contracted Leishmoniasis. The disease is native to Iraq and Afghanistan and if left untreated the acute form of Leishmoniasis can be fatal.
A 1967 US Army report “Arthropods of medical importance in Asia and the European USSR” lists all local insects, their distribution and the diseases that they carry. Biting flies, which live in drains, are also listed in the document. Their natural habitats, though, are the Philippines, not Georgia or Russia.

The Pentagon has a long history in using insects as vectors for diseases. According to a partially declassified 1981 US Army report, American bio warfare scientists carried out a number of experiments on insects. These operations were part of the US Entomological Warfare under the Program for Biological Weapons of the US.

Operation Big Itch: Field tests were performed to determine coverage patterns and survivability of the tropical rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis for use as a disease vector in biological warfare.
Operation Big Buzz: 1 million A. Aegypti mosquitoes were produced, 1/3 were placed in munitions and dropped from aircraft, or dispersed on the ground. The mosquitoes survived the airdrop and actively sought out human blood.
Parts of the 1981 US Army report such as the “Mass production of Aedes Aegypti” have not been declassified, potentially meaning that the project is still ongoing.
Aedes Aegypti, also known as yellow fever mosquito, have been widely used in US military operations. The same species of mosquitoes are alleged to be the vectors of dengue, chikungunya and the Zika virus, which causes genetic malformations in newborns
Operation Bellweather
The US Army Chemical Research and Development Command, Biological Weapons Branch, studied outdoor mosquito biting activity in a number of field tests at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, in 1960. Virgin female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which had been starved, were tested upon troops out in the open air.
Military Experiments with Tropical Mosquitoes and Ticks in Georgia
Such species of mosquitoes and fleas (studied in the past under the US Entomological Warfare Program) have also been collected in Georgia and tested at The Lugar Center.
Under the DTRA project “Virus and Other Arboviruses in Georgia” in 2014 the never-before-seen tropical mosquito Aedes albopictus was detected for the first time and after decades (60 years) the existence of Aedes Aegypti mosquito was confirmed in West Georgia.
Aedes Albopictus is a vector of many viral pathogens, Yellow fever virus, Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika.
These tropical mosquitoes Aedes Albopictus having never been seen before in Georgia, have also been detected in neighboring Russia (Krasnodar) and Turkey, According to data provided by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Their spread is unusual for this part of the world.
Aedes Aegypti Mosquitoes have been distributed only in Georgia, Southern Russia and Northern Turkey. They were detected for the first time in 2014 after the start of the Pentagon program at The Lugar Center.

The Pentagon has invested at least $65 million in gene editing.
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded 7 research teams to develop tools for genome engineering in insects, rodents and bacteria under DARPA’s Safe Gene program, using a novel CRISPR-Cas9 technology.
Under another military program –Insect Allies, GM insects are engineered to transfer modified genes to plants. The $10.3 million DARPA project includes both gene editing in insects and in the viruses that they transmit. Ecological Niche-preference Engineering is a third ongoing military program for genome engineering in insects. The Pentagon’s stated objective is to engineer GM organisms so that they can resist certain temperatures, change their habitat and food sources.
Besides gene editing in insects and in the viruses they transmit, the Pentagon wants to engineer humans as well.
DARPA Advanced Tools for Mammalian Genome Engineering Project seeks to create a biological platform inside the human body, using it to deliver new genetic information, and thus altering humans at the DNA level.
DARPA wants to insert an additional 47th artificial chromosome into human cells. This chromosome will deliver new genes that will be used for engineering the human body. SynPloid Biotek LLChas been awarded two contracts under the program totaling $1.1 million (2015-2016 – $ 100,600 for the first phase of the research; 2015-2017 – $ 999,300 for work which is not specified in the federal contracts registry. The company has only two employees and no previous record on bio-research.
