Omslag boek
Wolf ontwikkelde zich na de financiële crisis van 2008 tot een stevig criticus van ons bancaire systeem. Hij hekelt dat private banken aan het beheer van de maatschappelijke betaal- en spaarfunctie verdienen: ‘Bankiers zijn gewoon de best betaalde ambtenaren die we hebben; dat is belachelijk,’ zei hij in 2015.
Toen in maart 2023 de Amerikaanse en Zwitserse overheid opnieuw moesten ingrijpen om grote systeembanken (SVB, First Republic en Credit Suisse) te redden, beschreef hij ons bancaire systeem in de FT opnieuw als ‘een systeem dat essentieel is om de markteconomie te laten functioneren, terwijl het zelf niet volgens die regels werkt’. De groeiende populariteit van nationalisten en ‘would-be autocraten’ verontrust hem: van Jair Bolsonaro in Brazilië tot Boris Johnson in het VK, van Viktor Orbán in Hongarije tot Narendra Modi in India [en Trump in de VS]. (...)
De opkomst van autocraten is volgens Wolf onlosmakelijk verbonden met economische onzekerheid, financiële crises en de stagnatie van onze economie. ‘Mensen verwachten dat de economie ze een redelijk niveau van welvaart en kansen zal bieden. Gebeurt dat niet, of minder dan verwacht, dan raken ze gefrustreerd en rancuneus.’ (...)
Dat bancaire winsten worden verdeeld onder bankiers en hun aandeelhouders, terwijl bankreddingen, steunprogramma’s en garanties met publiek geld worden betaald, is tekenend voor een bredere trend. Onze economie is veranderd van een ‘productieve economie’ die welvaart voor velen oplevert in een ‘rentenierseconomie’ die alleen voor the happy few werkt. (...)
Zo legt hij stap voor stap uit hoe de samenleving binnen onze rentenierseconomie lijdt onder winstbejag, verkeerde toewijzing van middelen, monopolistische markten, zwakke concurrentie en belastingontwijking. (...)
De kracht van het democratisch kapitalisme is volgens Wolf dat daarbinnen de economische en politieke macht (relatief) goed van elkaar zijn gescheiden. De competitieve markt speelt er een cruciale rol in; die geeft mensen zonder politieke macht de vrijheid om zich economisch te ontplooien. Het democratische element zorgt ervoor dat rijkdom geen voorwaarde is om politieke invloed te kunnen uitoefenen. (...)
Dit delicate evenwicht kan volgens Wolf op twee manieren worden verstoord. ‘In het verleden kwam het gevaar van links. Ik was hartstochtelijk anticommunistisch.’ ‘Volledig socialisme’ is volgens hem ‘inherent antidemocratisch en tegen concurrentie’, aangezien binnen dat systeem ‘politieke macht en controle over waardevolle hulpbronnen versmolten zijn’.
‘Maar het autoritair socialisme is vrijwel verdwenen,’ zegt Wolf. ‘En voor het eerst in mijn leven denk ik dat het grootste gevaar nu van rechts komt.’ Het gevaar zit ’m in ‘de overname van de staat door degenen die de economie controleren’. ‘Would-be autocraten’ als Trump en Johnson zijn lid van de groep insiders met goede connecties, afkomstig uit de zakelijke elite die ze pretenderen te bestrijden. Wolf ziet verontrustende parallellen met het interbellum: ‘Het is geen geheim dat de Duitse zakenelite Hitler steunde.’ (...)
‘Democratisch kapitalisme beschouw ik als een huwelijk tussen democratie en kapitalisme,’ legt Wolf uit. ‘Het lijkt erop dat de democratie als eerste zal breken, maar we moeten naar het kapitalisme kijken om de belangrijkste reden voor dat falende huwelijk te vinden: de economie ondermijnt momenteel de democratie.’
Om het huwelijk te redden, moeten we de economie hervormen. Wolf haalt inspiratie uit de New Deal, het omvangrijke sociaal-economische hervormingsprogramma waarmee de Amerikaanse president Franklin D. Roosevelt in de jaren 1930 de economie uit het slop wist te halen. Wolf stelt een nieuwe New Deal voor die, net als Roosevelts plan, moet zorgen voor ‘duurzame economische groei die iedereen ten goede komt, goed en lonend werk, kansengelijkheid, en bestaanszekerheid voor wie dat nodig heeft’. De hervormingsmaatregelen die Wolf voorstelt, hebben we stuk voor stuk eerder gezien: uitbreiding van de welvaartsstaat, zwaardere belasting op vermogens, internationale afspraken om belastingontwijking tegen te gaan. En handhaving van antitrust-wetgeving om monopolies op te breken en de corporate invloed op politici te beperken. Tot slot wil hij speculatie met een financiële transactiebelasting ontmoedigen – want financiering moet weer naar de productieve economie. (...)
Radicalere ideeën – zoals een universeel basisinkomen, of degrowth (een politieke stroming die een economische paradigmaverschuiving voorstaat, weg van economische groei en consumentisme) – wijst hij af als utopisch. Hij zet liever in op de verduurzaming van onze energiebronnen dan op het minderen van consumptie. ‘Ik weet niet of dat volstaat om een klimaatcatastrofe te voorkomen, maar ik zie het andere gewoon niet gebeuren.’
Dat heeft alles te maken met politieke haalbaarheid. (...)

Het meest radicale voorstel in Wolfs nieuwe New Deal is de hervorming van de bancaire sector. Hij is voor de invoering van ‘een digitale munt, uitgegeven door de centrale bank, die bankdeposito’s kan vervangen’ oftewel Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). ‘In plaats van zoals nu te profiteren van het door de overheid verleende recht om geld te scheppen door leningen te verstrekken, zouden banken dan slechts tussenpersoon zijn.’ (...)
Of deze fundamentele hervorming van de bancaire sector wordt doorgevoerd, is zeer de vraag. Wolfs voorstel gaat veel verder dan dat van de Europese Commissie of de plannen van de Europese Centrale Bank, waarbij iedereen slechts 3000 euro op zijn rekening mag hebben. ‘Politici zijn doodsbang om die weg in te slaan, omdat het in wezen betekent dat ze slaags zullen raken met de machtigste belangen in onze maatschappij: de banksector.’ (...)
Zijn voorstellen zijn enerzijds weinig revolutionair; het is onzeker of ze ver genoeg gaan om de groeiende ongelijkheid en de gevolgen van klimaatverandering tijdig een halt toe te roepen. Dat zegt hij zelf ook. Anderzijds zijn vergelijkbare ideeën om belastingontwijking en financiële speculatie aan banden te leggen al vaak geopperd, maar zelfs zulke voor de hand liggende ingrepen zijn moeilijk te realiseren. Wolf ziet zijn werkgever, de Financial Times, nog steeds als ‘het politieke midden’. (...) De ideologie van de vrije markt, het klassieke liberalisme, is vrijwel verdwenen.’
Maar ook op links is er volgens Wolf veel veranderd. ‘Vroeger had links het altijd over gelijkwaardigheid, sociale zekerheid en de welvaartsstaat. Er was een levendig debat hoe radicaal de herverdeling moest zijn, hoe hoog de belastingen moesten zijn, enzovoorts.’ Maar die economische thema’s zijn verdrongen door ‘identiteitskwesties’. Hij acht dat een grote fout. ‘Een strijd om identiteitspolitiek zal rechts altijd winnen.’ (...)
‘Dat iemand als ik bij de Financial Times – de krant van de zakenelite – kan schrijven over doorgeschoten liberalisering, over beteugeling van winstzucht en herstel van het machtsevenwicht ten gunste van de arbeidersklasse, en dan mijn baan gewoon houd, laat zien hoe extreem de situatie is.’ Het is een uitnodiging: ‘Ik hoop dat dit de deur opent voor jongere mensen die revolutionairder zijn dan ik, en die betere ideeën hebben om het democratisch kapitalisme te redden.’

A) Motivation 1: Indirectly trying to control human effect on the environment
Well I think it’s logical that if things go wrong in nature: when there is suffering, when there’s destruction, pollution, chaos, etc. that one tries to look for the reason, the culprit, for all of this. By asking who/what is responsible for this mess on earth?
(Since reality is very complex not going to try to make any assumptions.)
Logically something; someone or some group of people or all people are responsible for the mess on earth …
Yet, it seems the CBDC is designed to put all the shame blame & indirect responsibility on the shoulders of the people.
Personally, I think this is wrong reasoning and a wrong way of trying to fix the mess.
Error 1 of the CBDC concept: putting responsibility & blame on the people instead of on the big companies.
For it are the big companies, those who produce things, that have the most impact on the products we use and how fast the change can go to more environmentally friendly products and packaging and living etc.
Motivation 1: Solution: Different method for achieving the same:
Thus I think that the reason for implementing the CBDC to ultimately get control over our pollution of the environment could much better be achieved if this responsibility, the severe control and need to change was put on the shoulders of the “big” companies.
The advantage of making companies responsible and controlled and not the users, is that the change would go way faster. The change to a world more in equilibrium with nature as well as forward evolution. It would give a smoother transition into a more balanced and prosperous world.
B) Motivation 2: Indirectly trying to evolve in to a different justice system: social credit score type?
Control up to this level over each individual will eventually miss its goal.
Because it’s a system that tries to be all knowing.
But the all knowing field “akashic records” do not work that way.
The all knowing field is, as far as I know, composed of all thoughts, all emotions, all events, all energies, …
No system or AI can replace the all knowing field. Thus no system will always make the right choices/judgements. But in merging with that type of power, because of its erroneous ways, it can destroy a lot.
Total and absolute control by a digital system will thus eventually only lead to more distortion and disbalance and thus disaster within the system.
This is the wrong way to use technology and AI to get to beter structures!
Motivation 2: Solution:
Is there another way forward to a more honest and just world in alignment with the highest capacity of humanity?
Can we evolve towards a new system wherein everybody counts?:

◉choice = able to follow intuition, and have new ideas and inventions, unique expression of the soul, free from excessive control

Correlates with trying to limit people’s privacy and thus freedom of choice. As a result people won’t be able to follow their intuition, have new ideas and inventions, unique expression of the soul. Thus it’s the opposite of creating freedom on this planet. It’s also the opposite of natural evolution. And it’s dangerous because all theories/opinions/beliefs are prone to flaws and changes over time … Thus enforcing one theory will always cause problems down the line.
Motivation 3: Solution:
Only higher awareness/consciousness of the interconnectedness of everything and everyone can solve this. But I don't know if it's realistic to get everyone to this stage of awareness.
