This is a listing of the largest passenger ships built, by completion date, from 1831 to 2018, with tonnage and length.

With some edits and gawk, we can get a listing of the span elapsed (in years) from the previous record-holder:

That's interestingly bi-modal. The 1900s peak was expected. The 2000s one somewhat less so, though it speaks to how much the cruise industry had grown since the 1980s. The long nearly-dry spell from 1936 to 1996 is particularly notable. That's 60 years, and though there were some entrants, the SS Normandie at 314m (1,029 ft) and 83,404 GRT was very nearly the longest and highest-tonnage vessel through the entire period. The RMS Queen Elizabeth and SS France managed to just edge her out in length, and the Elizabeth was just slightly higher in tonnage. The post-1990 era ships are heavier (to 137,308 GT), but remain shorter than the Normandie. The age of transoceanic airline travel (beginning seriously in the 1950s) and jet airliners (especially with the Boeing 707, beginning in October 1958) heralded the end of regular transoceanic commercial passenger service (and much continental passenger rail travel), as well as the notable subsidies of postal delivery ("RMS" stands for "royal mail ship", and carried mail under contract to the British Royal Mail. Other countries' ships offered similar services, and postal trains, with dedicated mail-sorting cars, were a huge boon to domestic rail service, being phased out in the US with the introduction of the Zone Improvement Plan, or ZIP code, in 1963). The subsequent cruise industry was dedicated far more to the voyage than the destination.

The SS Great Eastern, launched in 1858, at a time of very heavy reliance on trans-Atlantic sea shipping, is even more notable. At 18,915 GRT and 211m (692 ft), she held records for 41 years (tonnage) and 43 years (overall length), with her reign ending with her scrapping, and the title-holders from 1888-1899/1900 actually being smaller in dimension or displacement. The Great Eastern was near the limits of technology of the time, and proved uneconomical for much of her life.

The period since 2018 has seen no new recordbreaking ships commissioned, and in a post-Covid world, that spell may last a while.

• Rare exemple de maison de tradition espagnole à Mons ! la Maison espagnole remonte aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles, mais elle fut fortement restaurée au début du XXe siècle. Alors que le rez-de-chaussée compte deux baies du XVIe siècle, le premier étage et l’étage supérieur s’ouvrent sur plusieurs petites ouvertures de tailles différentes du siècle suivant. Une construction en briques y a été adjointe au XVIIe siècle. Restauré au XIXe siècle, la Maison espagnole fut rétablie par la suite dans son état primitif.

• Zeldzaam voorbeeld van een huis in Bergen in traditionele Spaanse stijl ! Het Spaanse Huis dateert uit de 16e en 17e eeuw, maar werd aan het begin van de 20e eeuw gerenoveerd. Alhoewel de gelijkvloers twee ramen uit de 16e eeuw heeft, hebben de eerste verdieping en de bovenste verdieping verschillende openingen uit de volgende eeuw. Een stenen constructie werd in de 17e eeuw toegevoegd. Het Spaanse Huis werd in de 19e eeuw gerenoveerd, maar werd dan in zijn oorspronkelijke staat hersteld.

• Rare example of a house in traditional Spanish style in Mons ! The Spanish House dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, but is was renovated in the beginning of the 20th century. Although the ground floor has got two windows of the 16th century, the first floor and upper floor have got many different openings dating from the next century. A stone construction was added in the 17th century. Renovated in the 19th century, the Spanish House was then restored to its original state.

Ein Backsteingebäude wurde im 17. Jahrhundert hinzugefügt. Das im 19. Jahrhundert renovierte spanische Haus wurde danach in seinem ursprünglichen Zustand restauriert.

COVID-19 in Iceland: Violated Isolation and Infected Over 100

Around 100 domestic cases of COVID-19 that have arisen in Iceland the past few days can be traced to a pair of French tourists that came to the country in mid-August, Vísir reports. The two were put into isolation after testing positive for the novel coronavirus, but broke regulations. Three different strains of SARS-CoV-2 are responsible for Iceland’s 281 active cases.

In the last five days, 196 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Iceland. Over half of the new infections can be traced to the Irishman pub and Brewdog restaurant, both in downtown Reykjavík. “Most of the infections in recent days originate from these two places. These are probably around 100 people or just over that,” Chief Epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason stated. ...

The infected count is now 400 per Worldometers. At a 4% global mortality rate, 16 are likely to die (Iceland's death rate has been lower, at 0.5%, suggesting possibly 2 deaths). These are at the least negligent homicides if not premeditated murder.

I found myself recently attempting to explain to someone who seems strongly motivated not to understand the principle that a crisis can be both enduring and critical, in answer to the false assertion that "ongoing crises are not emergencies."

This thing is with us until it isn't. Covid operates on its own schedule, not ours. People not being selfish idiots would help one fucking hell of a lot to speed the process and lower risks, deaths, and costs, however.

COVID-19: Florida is the new Iran. Pandemic meets Spring Break

Unpardonable malpractice and incompetence by local, state, and federal officials threaten to trigger widespread distribution of COVID-19 through the US by way of a treasured college tradition: spring break.

Florida officials are not releasing testing results. Spring break is effectively now (Feburuary 29 - March 7).

As of 2015, half of all college students plan some kind of spring-break vacation or travel.

There's been news coverage of this. On February 25, the Chicago Tribune carried a story "Spring break is coming and the coronavirus is spreading. Here’s what to know before you go.", predicated on the information that:

The head of the World Health Organization said Monday the virus has “pandemic potential" but is not spreading uncontained across the globe “for the moment.”

What a difference four days makes.

At present, there are in fact multiple instances of community transmission within the US, though the CDC COVID-19 status page (archive) claims otherwise:

At this time, this virus is NOT currently spreading in the community in the United States.

Further, there are imediments on testing (insufficient materials, inappropriate protocols, official refusal to grant testing permission, as at UC Davis Medical Center), and confusion at the national and state levels in how to address the disease.

We know that cruise ships are about the worst possible place to be.

And we're about to see roughly ten million young people (half of the nineteen million college students in the US go out, get their mental states altered, congregate, exercise poor judgement, and then return to the campuses from which they came, all over the country, largely through the air travel network.

Remember that COVID-19 broke out in China just as its major travel event, Chinese New Year, hit. This helped spread the disease throughout the country.

The US are about to run the same experiment.

• En 1878, Van Gogh obtient une mission d'évangéliste en Belgique, auprès des mineurs de charbon du Borinage, dans la région de Mons. Il arrive à Cuesmes pour s'occuper des mineurs en proie à des conditions de vie misérables. Allant au bout de ses convictions, Van Gogh décide de vivre comme ceux auprès desquels il prêche, partageant leurs difficultés, jusqu'à dormir sur la paille, dans une vieille baraque.
• In 1878 werd Van Gogh naar de Borinage (o.a. in Cuesmes, in de omgeving van Bergen) gestuurd, waar hij op 1 februari 1879 aan een proefperiode als lekenprediker tussen de mijnwerkers begon. Hij werkte er in bittere armoede en was depressief. Hij woonde in een barak en sliep op stro. Hij voelde de ontberingen van de mijnwerkers diep aan en wilde zich met hen vereenzelvigen.
• In 1878 Van Gogh took up a post as a missionary in the coal-mining district of Borinage (inter alia in Cuesmes, not far away from Mons in Belgium). To show support for his impoverished congregation, he decided to live in a small shack where he slept on straw. He wanted to identify himself with the miserable plight of the mineworkers.
• Im Jahre 1878 fand Van Gogh eine Anstellung als Hilfsprediger im Borinage, einem belgischen Steinkohlerevier (unter anderem in Cuesmes, nicht weit von Mons), wo die Menschen unter besonders harten Bedingungen lebten. Dort identifizierte er sich in hohem Maße mit dem Schicksal der Bergarbeiter : er lebte in ärmlichsten Verhältnissen und schlief auf Stroh in einer alten Baracke.
• Nel 1878 Van Gogh andò a vivere nel Borinage (tra l'altro in Cuesmes, vicino a Mons), una regione carbonifera belga dove i lavoratori vivevano in condizioni di estremo disagio. In questo miserabile centro minerario, povero tra i poveri, van Gogh si prese cura dei malati. Dormiva sulla paglia, in una baracca decadente : voleva identificarsi con le dure condizioni di vita dei minatori.
