#solidarity

This is not a #Maidan, although many political analysts are trying to present it this way. Where did such amazing #self-organization come from? This is the experience and tradition of the workers. Strikes have been shaking the #Mangistau region since 2008, and the strike movement began back in the 2000s. Even without any input from the #Communist Party or other leftist groups, there were constant demands to nationalize the oil companies. The workers simply saw with their own eyes what privatization and foreign capitalist takeover was leading to. In the course of these earlier demonstrations, they gained enormous experience in struggle and #solidarity. The very life in the wilderness made people stick together. It was against this background that the working class and the rest of the population came together. The protests of the workers in #Zhanoazen and #Aktau then set the tone for other regions of the country. Yurts and tents, which protesters began to put up in the main squares of the cities, were not at all taken from the “Euromaidan” experience: they stood in the Mangastau Region during the local strikes last year. The population itself brought water and food for the protesters.
In Kazakhstan today there is no legal #opposition, the entire political field has been cleared. The Communist Party of #Kazakhstan was the last to be liquidated in 2015. Only 7 pro-governmental parties remained. But there are plenty of #NGOs working in the country, which actively cooperate with the authorities in promoting a pro-Western agenda. Their favorite topics: the famine of the 1930s, the rehabilitation of participants of the Basmachi movement and collaborators of World War II, and so on. NGOs also work on the development of nationalist movement, which in Kazakhstan is completely pro-government. Nationalists hold rallies against #China and #Russia which are sanctioned by the authorities.

“His Spirit Reflected a Giant”: Mumia Abu-Jamal Remembers Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s Visit on Death Row

Mumia Abu-Jamal remembers South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who died on Sunday at the age of 90. Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for fighting to end apartheid in South Africa. In 2007, Tutu visited Mumia when he was still on death row. “His spirit reflected a giant,” says Abu-Jamal.

“He struggled for change with his prophetic voice, his sweet humor, his deep love and his boundless sense of compassion.”

AOC & Noam Chomsky: The Way Forward

*In this historic, inter-generational meeting of minds, Laura Flanders brings together New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and MIT professor emeritus Noam Chomsky—for the first time ever—to discuss the way forward for people, politics, and the planet. From labor strikes to racial uprisings to climate action to the Great Resignation, they reflect on the renewed power of collective organizing and the changing tide in economic thinking and electoral politics. Their insights demand that we think differently about everything from our nation’s history and its place in the world, to who can run for office in America and win. In their first face-to-face conversation, the mutual admiration is palpable. Laura closes with some thoughts on thinking the unthinkable. *

“We’re now having one of the major strikes in American history when workers are simply saying, ‘We're not gonna go back to the rotten, oppressive jobs, or precarious circumstances, with no health[care].’ The one-sided class war of the last 40 years is becoming two-sided…” —Noam Chomsky

“There are already communities actively experimenting and developing solutions… What I work on is not how we find solutions but how we scale [them] to transform our society.” —AOC

December 1st - A Day to Write To Prisoners!

Prisoners for Peace Day

December 1st is Prisoners for Peace Day. On this day (and every day) we encourage you to show #solidarity with the #activists and #ConscientiousObjectors imprisoned due to their #peace work and their refusal to take #arms and perform #military service.

This year we want to highlight and denounce how countries like #Singapore, the Republic of #Korea, #Eritrea and #Tajikistan continues to prosecute and imprison conscientious objectors.

Find a list of #prisoners for peace here, download the list here or below.

As we get closer to this day, what can you do?
We have been told repeatedly by people who have been sent messages of solidarity while in #prison, either via #letters or solidarity actions, that the moral support of like-minded people has been invaluable. Your solidarity is crucial to remind the #imprisoned refusers and peace activists that they are not alone and that we are aware of the significance of their #resistance. On this day,

  • Join many others from across the world and write to those imprisoned for their peace work and conscientious objection.
  • Encourage your friends, peace group, student, faith or community group to organise a card-writing session (online, or if the Covid-19 regulations allow, physical).
  • Help us spread the word on social media. Use the hashtag #PfPday21 and post your messages of solidarity with prisoners for peace on social media, and invite others to write to those in #jail.

If you have details of other prisoners for peace not yet listed, please write to info@wri-irg.org.

If we are unable to confront reactionary ideas in our own movement, we will always be inhibited in pursuing our ultimate aim: the #socialist transformation of #society.’

Daniel Randall’s book is a socialist analysis of #leftantisemitism, which asks: ‘How did the political #left, a movement apparently committed to #equality, become a site of #antisemitism, and how can antisemitism on the left be overcome?

Randall traces left antisemitism’s origins to primitive critiques of #capitalism that conflated #Jews with #capital; Stalinism’s “anti-cosmopolitan” and “ #antiZionist ” campaigns of the 1950s onwards; and a form of “ #anti-imperialism ” which designates any #opposition to western #imperialism, including #Israel, as necessarily #progressive.

He argues that, far from representing a logical continuation or inevitable endpoint of left-wing ideas, left antisemitism represents a distortion of them, and that by re-anchoring the socialist project in a #class-struggle #politics of #solidarity and #equality, the left can confront and overcome antisemitism within its own ranks.

As Keir Starmer's Labour leadership launches a new wave of proscriptions and expulsions, Randall argues that these administrative responses are inadequate at best, and counterproductive at worst. He argues that only a political-educational campaign, targeting the #ideological roots of left antisemitism, can overcome it.

This is the second original title published by No Pasaran Media and comes as debates about the response to antisemitism in the #Labour Party continue, and after a spike in antisemitic incidents following an escalation of violence in Israel/ #Palestine in May 2021.

We are workers and activists divided by geography and our role in the global economy but united in our commitment to Make Amazon Pay fair wages, its taxes and for its impact on the planet.

On Black Friday 26 November 2021, from oil refineries, to factories, to warehouses, to data centres, to corporate offices in countries across the world, workers and activists are rising up in strikes, protests and actions to Make Amazon Pay."

The Response

The Response: How Puerto Ricans Are Restoring Power to the People

In the wake of Hurricane Maria, a quiet revolution began percolating on the island of Puerto Rico. What started as an impromptu community kitchen meant to help feed survivors in the town of Caguas quickly grew into an island-wide network of mutual aid centers (Centros de Apoyo Mutuo) with the ultimate goal to restore power — both electric and civic — to the people.

In 2018, a little more than nine months after Maria, Shareable began working with a team of filmmakers, writers, audio engineers, partners, and funders on “The Response” documentary to share this story with the world.

The 30-minute award-winning micro-budget documentary explores community-led disaster response and recovery efforts in Puerto Rico; letting the people involved in the mutual aid centers tell their own stories of the storm, recovery, and the tenuous relationship between the Puerto Rican people and the government.

Despite the grave nature of this storm, which many believe to be the worst disaster to hit the United States or its colonies in the past 100 years, this story is also celebratory. For some, there is a deep joy that has accompanied the sadness; a feeling of solidarity and possibility that didn’t previously exist in the same way before the storm.

The film also acts as a reminder of how damaging climate-fueled disasters can be and urges us to consider how resilient our communities are, how best to adapt for the changes ahead, and how to respond and rebuild in a just and equitable way with extra consideration for the most vulnerable populations.
