„Es ist ein fataler Irrtum zu glauben, dass sich die Zukunftsaussichten der Ukraine verbessern, je länger der Krieg dauert“
“It is a fatal mistake to believe that #Ukraine's future prospects will improve the longer the war lasts”

It is obvious that Washington is leaving the war by shifting all responsibility to Europe and is instead prioritising the procurement of #contracts for the American #military-industrial complex, which is what the bulk of the 10-year plan with Kiev will revolve around - rearming Ukraine and enriching American companies. Although the US is slowly leaving the war, it does not indicate that Washington is serious about #negotiations, which Kujat highlights Moscow had been urging for from as early as 2021.

I was just scrolling yesterday through my stared posts in looking for something and I found this - which just seems way too relevant today in light of the #TuckerCarlson interview with #Putin.

Always remember what #peace means for #Russia whenever that #Kremlin idiot says it wants #negotiations. Always remember what #concessions by #Ukraine in exchange for #peace actually means for #TerroRussia. The only #peace which is acceptable for #Putler is the one where Ukraine gives up all its territory. Then #Moscow can start its #ethniccleaning and the erasure of #Ukrainian identity, just like it did with all the people in its empire. And when that happens, other countries are endangered of following suite - #Moldova, #Georgia, #TheBaltics, even #Poland and #Romania.

At this point, you could comfortably say that Russia is the last classical style #colonialempire of Europe. The only way to #EndTheWarInUkraine is to #defeatrussia.

To those who thinks that #Ukraine should negotiate peace with #Russia, then Medvedev has just removed any reason to do so:https://twitter.com/MedvedevRussiaE/status/1691545649299304448

US Railroad Workers ‘Under the Thumb’

https://www.counterpunch.org/2022/12/05/us-railroad-workers-under-the-thumb/

'This past week both the administration and Congress have made a #railroad #strike #illegal by passing legislation to that effect. Railroad workers in the US have always been a target of government #strike-prevention. The RailwayLaborAct in 1926 set the pattern that was taken up for the rest of the US labor-force with Taft-Hartley in 1947 and all #anti-strike measures that followed.

The current 2022 railroad negotiations and government intervention is but the latest example of joint corporate-government intervention in labor negotiations designed to #prevent-workers-from-striking.' We are in a period when the US ruling elites are willing to attack any challenge to their hegemony and power #domestically, as well as internationally. The government’s recent intervention to #deny #railroad #workers #the-right-to-strike is but the latest and most visible expression of the elites’ #class-war-policy-at-home.'

Continued fighting is the worst choice for ordinary people

In recent weeks, the leaders of the three largest EU countries by population — France, Germany, and Italy — have all come out in favor of negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow as a way to end the fighting in Ukraine.

Unlike President Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi have all spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

The three European leaders have all signed off on sending weapons to the Ukrainians but have also been calling for a ceasefire. After speaking with Putin by phone on Friday, Scholz wrote on Twitter: “There must be a ceasefire in Ukraine as quickly as possible.”

In an address to European Parliament last week, Macron said, “We are not at war with Russia.” He said that Europe’s “duty is to stand with Ukraine to achieve a ceasefire, then build peace.”

Ukrainian Pacifists: War is a crime against humanity

On April 17, 2022, Ukrainian pacifists adopted a statement reposted here...

Ukrainian Pacifist Movement is gravely concerned about the active burning of bridges for a #peaceful #resolution of #conflict between #Russia and #Ukraine on both sides and signals of intentions to continue the #bloodshed indefinitely to achieve some sovereign ambitions.

We condemn the #Russian decision to invade Ukraine on 24 February 2022, which led to a fatal escalation and thousands of deaths, reiterating our #condemnation of the reciprocal #violations of the #ceasefire envisaged in Minsk agreements by Russian and #Ukrainian combatants in #Donbas prior to the escalation of Russian #aggression.

We condemn the mutual labeling of parties to the conflict as Nazi-alike enemies and #war criminals, stuffed into legislation, reinforced by the official #propaganda of extreme and irreconcilable #hostility. We believe that the law should build #peace, not incite war; and #history should give us examples how people can return to peaceful life, not excuses for continuing the war. We insist that accountability for crimes must be established by an independent and competent judicial body in due process of law, in result of unbiased and impartial investigation, especially in the most serious crimes, such as #genocide. We emphasize that the tragic consequences of military brutality must not be used to incite #hatred and justify new #atrocities, on the contrary, such #tragedies should cool the fighting spirit and encourage a persistent search for the most bloodless ways to end the war.

We condemn military actions on both sides, the hostilities which harm civilians. We insist that all shooting should be stopped, all sides should honor the memory of killed people and, after due grief, calmly and honestly commit to peace talks.

We condemn statements on the Russian side about the intention to achieve certain goals by military means if they cannot be achieved through #negotiations.

We condemn statements on the Ukrainian side that continuation of peace talks depends on winning the best negotiating positions at the battlefield.

We condemn the unwillingness of both sides to cease fire during the peace talks.

We condemn the practice of forcing #civilians to conduct military service, to perform military tasks and to support the army against the will of peaceful people in Russia and Ukraine. We insist that such practices, especially during hostilities, grossly violate the principle of distinction between militaries and civilians in international #humanitarian law. Any forms of contempt for the human right to conscientious objection to military service are unacceptable.

We condemn all military support provided by Russia and NATO countries for militant radicals in Ukraine provoking further escalation of the military #conflict.

We call on all peace-loving people in Ukraine and around the world to remain peace-loving people in all circumstances and to help others to be peace-loving people, to collect and disseminate knowledge about peaceful and #nonviolent way of life, to tell the #truth that unites peace-loving people, to #resist evil and #injustice without #violence, and debunk myths about necessary, beneficial, inevitable, and just war. We don’t call for any particular action now to ensure that peace plans will not be targeted by hatred and attacks of #militarists, but we are confident that #pacifists of the world have a good imagination and experience of practical realization of their best dreams. Our actions should be guided by hope for a peaceful and happy future, and not by fears. Let our peace work bring closer the future from dreams.

War is a crime against humanity. Therefore, we are determined not to support any kind of war and to strive for the removal of all causes of war.”

Oxford Energy Podcast – COP26: This time it’s serious

In this OIES podcast James Henderson talks to Malcolm Keay, a Senior Research Fellow at OIES, about his article “COP26: This time it’s serious” which was published in the latest edition of the Oxford Energy Forum. Malcolm discusses the history of COP agreements since Kyoto, and in particular focuses on the importance of COP21 in Paris and the agreement reached there which is now being reviewed and updated at COP26. He also talks about the main challenges that will face governments and policy-makers during the COP26 negotiations and also considers the real issues that will be faced in the implementation of any agreement. He outlines his views on the need for a whole energy system approach that will require radical policy shifts from governments as well as changes in behaviour from energy producers and consumers. He concludes that, while COP26 is likely to see a continuation of the policy momentum towards a net-zero future, the real challenges will come once the meeting is over.
