The Most Hopeful Chart in the World - by Ed Conway

#environment #energy #pollution #climate #resources

Our politicians might not like to discuss this. But in Europe in particular, the transition depends rather heavily on buying cheap Chinese technology to enable us to meet all those mandates for green vehicles and power. We probably couldn’t afford it otherwise. And that also means depending on Chinese coal. What else did you think was powering most of those factories?

Why #Russia will never attack the #EU:

I know there is a lot of #military and patriotic #propaganda out there and the military industrial complex is on the rise because everyone wants to arm themselves because of the Russian #threat.

Let's pause for a moment and think about the reasons why #war is still being waged today:

1) The number one reason is still #religion. Religion serves to unite one's own #community, but is also always a demarcation against others. In Europe and Russia, religion only plays a subordinate role and the churches are struggling with insignificance.

2) The second important reason is natural #resources. Western Europe has long since used up its natural resources and is therefore plundering other countries, mainly in #Africa. Russia has enough natural resources of its own.

3) Population growth so that new living spaces are needed. In #Europe and #Russia, the #population is declining. As a result, many families only have one child and they don't want to lose it to the war.

4) Important geostrategic positions. Europe is losing importance. Russia's most important trading partners are in #Asia. Europe is strategically insignificant.

Europe is increasingly losing importance and therefore wants to feel important militarily. For Russia, an attack would bring no advantage and only high losses. Russia can infiltrate the weakened political system in Europe much more easily by manipulating elections and causing social unrest with propaganda. This hybrid warfare is much more successful than an open war.

#Humanity ushered in the end of mammalian dominance.

They do not use the planet's resources to sustainably expand their dominance, but only in the short term and only for their species and to allow their livestock to grow disproportionately.

In doing so, they destroy the necessary diversity and foundations of resilience that are able to cope with natural and self-induced changes.

They destroy both the basic biomass and the diversity on which it was based. All species are being decimated or have already been wiped out.

Instead, they use the resources for consumption, vanity, comfort and even worse for senseless wars.

We are leaving young people a completely destroyed, heated planet that will become a dance on a volcano for them.

The image above was created with the help of #AI. I didn't want to endanger a real teenager for a photo. Why am I using an image at all for my #warnings to humanity? You are the reason because you only like and share what has a picture and ignore text.

Lost Materials #1: Malachite - by Ed Conway

#environment #resources

Back when I was writing Material World, a question I often wondered about - and never really satisfactorily answered - was whether there were any materials humankind had entirely exhausted.

The Race for Copper Hots Up - by Ed Conway - Material World

#environment #energy #resources

So the supply side of things is challenging. But then there’s the demand side. Copper is perhaps the single most important metal in the energy transition. As I wrote in the conclusion of the book, “On the basis of one calculation, we will need to mine more copper in the next 22 years than we have in the entirety of the past 5,000 years of human history.”

The #AI #supply chain:

"It makes visible the #connection between an #engineer training an #algorithm in the #UK, a miner extracting #tantalum in #Kazakhistan, an engineer in #Mexico working in a #data centre, a #worker in #Taiwan #manufacturing GPUs and a worker in #Kenya dismantling e-waste"

#China's #population drops for second year, with record low #birth rate

Source: https://www.reuters.com/world/china/chinas-population-drops-2nd-year-raises-long-term-growth-concerns-2024-01-17/

The country's retirement-age population, aged 60 and over, is expected to increase to more than 400 million by 2035 - more than the entire population of the United States - from about 280 million people currently.
The state-run Chinese Academy of Sciences sees the #pension #system running out of money by 2035.

Population reduction is good for the #environment. Perpetual growth is nonsense on a finite planet. Why not solve this problem now while we are still doing relatively well? I forgot, because it means work for politicians and they're not so good at that. Besides, many people don't want to change and adapt and believe that everything was better in the past. We used to cause the problems in the past that are now threatening to ruin our #future!

#Nations don't get rich by plundering other nations

source: https://www.noahpinion.blog/p/nations-dont-get-rich-by-plundering

Anyway, there are two more sophisticated cases you can make for the “imperial plunder” #theory of national wealth. The first is that continuing plunder is responsible for income differences between countries. The second is that plunder was necessary to initiate the process that eventually led to industrial #production and modern science. The first of these arguments is wrong; the second can’t easily be disproven, but there’s major reason for doubt.

The Hump - by Ed Conway - Material World

#environment #climate #pollution #resources

The charts underline an important point. We use an extraordinary amount of fossil fuels each year (far, far more than most people appreciate). And the main message from this chart is that while we’ll certainly need to do a lot of mining to get the copper, lithium, cobalt etc we’ll need, that weight of “new” stuff will be far less than the weight of all the fossil fuels we’re no longer using.

But the chart, which begins at around 2020, seems to suggest that this is happening now.

In other words, far from increasing in the short to medium term, as I wrote in my book, it looks tantalisingly as if humanity’s material footprint is actually about to fall immediately.
