RAMSA to expand New-York Historical Society for LGBTQ+ museum

New-York Historical Society expansion from Central Park West

The New-York Historical Society will be extended by Robert A M Stern Architects to create a permanent home for The American LGBTQ+ Museum.

New York City's oldest museum will gain 70,000 square feet of classroom, gallery and library space that it will share with the city's first museum dedicated to LGBTQ+ history and culture.

Robert A M Stern Architects (RAMSA) received unanimous approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission for its plans for the building at 170 Central Park West.

"It's been a privilege to work with the New-York Historical Society to design an expansion of its landmark building, enabling it to extend its broad and vital mission to a growing audience that ranges from local schoolchildren to international visitors," said studio founder Robert A M Stern.

"With input from engaged and supportive neighbors and in response to the historic neighboring townhouses, the design of the expansion is sympathetic to the palette and rhythm of the 1908 building and its 1938 additions."

The majority of construction will occur at the rear of the building, along West 76th Street. The first phase involves creating below-ground spaces for the Patricia D Klingenstein Library, which contains rare copies of America's foundational documents.

These are currently housed off-site and will require state-of-the-art storage in order to be preserved and made accessible for library users.

Next, three storeys of galleries and a classroom will be built above the new library and integrated with the current layout during phase two.

A stack of rooms for meetings, conservation and mechanical services will also be constructed on top of the junction where the old and new sections will connect.

The American LGBTQ+ Museum will occupy the entirety of the extension's fourth floor, encompassing two galleries with access to the roof garden, and areas for offices and storage.

During construction, its team will partner with New-York Historical Society to develop programming in the existing building and outdoor spaces for the museum's visitors and school children.

"The respect and rigor with which New-York Historical Society has approached this process, including their consultation with local communities, mirrors our own commitment to building a thoughtful, welcoming, queer, and inclusive experience for our visitors and partners," said chair of the board of directors at The American LGBTQ+ Museum Richard Burns.

"We look forward to bringing a dynamic new museum to life within this cherished, deeply-respected, and growing New York City landmark."

New-York Historical Society trustees purchased the lot behind the museum as far back as 1937.

The institution, which was founded in 1804 and aims to tell stories of New York and the nation's diverse populations through its exhibits, is finally embarking on its plans for expansion after receiving financial backing from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

"How gratifying it is to realise the dream of telling the American story in all its complexity in state-of-the-art educational spaces and a brand-new gallery dedicated to the struggle for civil rights of the American LGBTQ+ community," said New-York Historical Society president and CEO Louise Mirrer.

New-York Historical Society is located a block to the south of the American Museum of Natural History, which is also undergoing expansion work overseen by Studio Gang.

On the other side of Central Park, the controversial extension to the Frick Collection by Selldorf Architects is underway, while its Renaissance artworks are displayed at the Marcel Breuer building that was previously used by The Whitney Museum and then The Met.

Historic Palacio Pereira in Santiago turned into Chile's Ministry of Culture

Chile's Ministry of Culture

Architects Cecilia Puga, Paula Velasco and Alberto Moletto have restored Santiago's Palacio Pereira, an abandoned 19th-century neoclassical mansion, turning it into offices where Chile's new constitution will be written.

The building, which was designed in the mid 1800s by French architect Lucien Hénault is now the headquarters for the country's Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage.

Cecilia Puga and Paula Velasco, who collaborate in a partnership, worked with Moletto Arquitectos founder Alberto Moletto on the project.

The trio of Santiago-based architects, led by Puga, won the competition to renovate the building in 2012.

Instead of restoring the building to an exact copy of its original state, the architects added contemporary additions to places where the historic building had crumbled away .

"The project's material strategy sought to draw attention to the complexity of inhabiting such a structure," said the architects.

"Prioritizing neither the new intervention nor the character of the elegant wreckage of the Palacio Pereira."

A complex grid of concrete pillars restores the shape of the original courtyard where the building had been partially demolished.

The courtyard originally separated the family rooms from the services areas when the building was a grand house. Now levels of offices with floor-to-ceiling glazing look out through the concrete pillars onto the courtyard.

"Given the collapse of original mezzanines in many areas of the building, such as the ones destinated to be a public cafeteria and book store, we let the fabric of the building exposed and in full height without rebuilding ceilings or covering surfaces," added the architects.

In these areas, the 15-metre-high ceilings have been accentuated by a pair of helical staircases clad in bronze.

Throughout its lifetime the building suffered damage in earthquakes and after the 1973 coup d'état.

When it was designated a national monument in 1981 it was already in a state of disrepair that worsened over decades of abandonment

Palacio Pereira was bought by the government in 2011 and it launched a competition to restore and convert the mansion into offices for the culture ministry.

The offices will be one of the venues for Chile's Constitutional Convention, where a new constitution will be written for the country following protests and riots that began in October 2019.

Local photographer Cristobal Palma documented the city's boarded-up streets during this period of unrest in a photo essay for Dezeen.

More historic buildings given a new lease of life in the city include a 1930s mansion that's now a fintech startup's offices and an abandoned public education building that's been turned into a family health centre.

BeijingSpring

Beijing Spring

Beijing Spring chronicles modern China’s first democracy movement and forgotten struggle for freedom of expression. In 1978, Deng Xiaoping tolerated the open posting of grievances, liberal ideas and art on Democracy Wall near Tiananmen Square.

The “Stars”, a group of self-taught artists (including Ai Weiwei) exposed the inhumanity of the Cultural Revolution and challenged propaganda art, while Wei Jingsheng called for democracy.

By 1979, Deng became fearful and cracked down, closing Democracy Wall, imprisoning some, and shutting the door on this brief period of reform.

One filmmaker, Chi Xiaoning, dared stand on top of Democracy Wall, camera in hand, recording it all.

When he died, no one knew his film’s whereabouts. After years of searching, this never-before-seen footage was tracked down by the film’s director, now shown for the first time ever in Beijing Spring.

These brave voices of this officially censored moment in Chinese history will surely inspire all of today’s freedom fighters.

POMEGRANATE

China, Late Southern Song dynasty, or early Yuan dynasty, about 1200-1340

-- Cultural History of the Pomegranate --

Pomegranate is native to a region from Iran to northern India. Pomegranates have been cultivated throughout the Middle East, South Asia, and Mediterranean region for several millennia, and also thrive in the drier climates of California and Arizona.

Carbonized exocarp of the fruit has been identified in early Bronze Age levels of Jericho in the West Bank - Palestine, as well as late Bronze Age levels of Hala Sultan Tekke on Cyprus and Tiryns. A large, dry pomegranate was found in the tomb of Djehuty, the butler of Queen Hatshepsut in Egypt; Mesopotamian cuneiform records mention pomegranates from the mid-third millennium BC onwards.

It is also extensively grown in South China and in Southeast Asia, whether originally spread along the route of the Silk Road or brought by sea traders. Kandahar is famous in Afghanistan for its high-quality pomegranates.

Although not native to Korea or Japan, the pomegranate is widely grown there and many cultivars have been developed. It is widely used for bonsai because of its flowers and for the unusual twisted bark the older specimens can attain. The term "balaustine" (Latin: balaustinus) is also used for a pomegranate-red colour.

Celebrities posing #naked while #pregnant began as a fiercely defiant and provocative stunt. #Demi_Moore’s 1991 Vanity Fair cover—an undeniably confident woman fully #nude, cradling her pregnant belly—was #progressive in its mere existence: the overt #sexualization and #celebration of a #bodyImage that the #American public had, generally, been taught not to think of as #sexy.

It was a transgressive moment in its #controversy (in 1991, many more #conservative people were none-too-pleased to see a nude pregnant #woman staring at them from the shelves of the grocery store cashier aisle), but also in how it paved the way for the image to eventually become #uncontroversial almost entirely; to be #normalized.

(Go figure something as #natural as a pregnant woman’s body needs to be normalized. #Humans are awful.)

In the decades since Moore’s cover, the nude pregnant #photo has almost become a rudimentary rite of passage for celebrities, especially those whose careers were built on—and at times #exploited—their sexuality. #Christina_Aguilera, #Jessica_Simpson, #Britney_Spears, #Nia_Long, #Cindy_Crawford, #Claudia_Schiffer, #Mariah_Carey, #Monica_Bellucci: the nude photo shoot evolved from #progressive act of #rebellion to an #essential part of the Pregnant Celebrity Publicity Tour. As essential, even, as the “Check Out My Post-Baby Bod!” photo shoot that would typically follow.

It’s easy—and at this point #lazy and #unoriginal—to #attack any news Kardashian makes as a #shameless ploy for more press. The fact of the matter is that Kardashian has built a #career as an expert #manipulator of a #realityTV genre that’s mandated that #media take its stars #seriously, because the many #fans of these shows already do.

She’s an aficionado of #branding, a polarizing #fashion maven, and, after years in the public eye, a bona fide #cultural #influencer.

As such, Kardashian’s treatment of her #celebrity spotlight has #matured along with our #perception of her #influence. She’s no longer the #girl made famous by the #sexTape, but a #person with a #platform who is given a megaphone to speak about #feminism, #sexism, #sexualizing, and, god help us, real things.

There’s something sort of #admirable about this #evolution.
