She helped win a $ #15-minimum-wage for #Seattle #workers, pushed the council to #tax #Amazon, and championed #renter #protection as the #Chair-of-the-Renters-and-Sustainability-Committee. US Railroad Workers ‘Under the Thumb’

https://www.counterpunch.org/2022/12/05/us-railroad-workers-under-the-thumb/

'This past week both the administration and Congress have made a #railroad #strike #illegal by passing legislation to that effect. Railroad workers in the US have always been a target of government #strike-prevention. The RailwayLaborAct in 1926 set the pattern that was taken up for the rest of the US labor-force with Taft-Hartley in 1947 and all #anti-strike measures that followed.

The current 2022 railroad negotiations and government intervention is but the latest example of joint corporate-government intervention in labor negotiations designed to #prevent-workers-from-striking.' We are in a period when the US ruling elites are willing to attack any challenge to their hegemony and power #domestically, as well as internationally. The government’s recent intervention to #deny #railroad #workers #the-right-to-strike is but the latest and most visible expression of the elites’ #class-war-policy-at-home.'

#Remote #workers are wasting their #time proving they’re actually #working

source: https://www.vox.com/recode/2022/9/22/23360887/remote-work-productivity-theater-back-to-office

#Productivity #theater is when workers frequently update their status on #Slack or toggle their mouse to make sure the status light in #Microsoft #Teams is green. They say hello and goodbye, and they drop into different channels throughout the day to chitchat. They check in with #managers and just tell anyone what they’re working on. They even join #meetings they don’t need to be in (and there are many more meetings) and answer emails late into the night.

Political stunt harms asylum seekers and businesses

"Why are they sending them there when we need the people here. We could utilize them," said Gautem.

Asylum seekers are legally able to work in the United States while they await their asylum cases. During that waiting period, those seeking asylum can apply for work permits — a process that usually takes 180 days before they are authorized.

Bernie backs railroad workers union

Quote below from https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/3643255-sanders-blocks-proposal-to-force-rail-unions-to-accept-labor-deal/

[Bernie] argued that railroad companies are making huge profits and should start treating their workers more fairly.

“The rail industry has seen huge profits in recent years and last year alone made a record-breaking $20 billion in profit,” Sanders said. “Last year, the CEO of CSX made over $20 million in total compensation, while the CEOs of Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern made over $14 million each in total compensation.”

By contrast, Sanders said that workers in the freight rail industry are “entitled to a grand total of zero sick days.”

Quotes below from https://www.axios.com/2022/09/13/with-rail-strike-looming-two-unions-are-holding-out

Working conditions — more than pay demands — are holding up the resolution of a years long labor dispute between the nation's largest freight rail companies and their unions.

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, and The SMART Transportation Division say in statements that they need paid sick leave and better policies around work hours, before they sign onto the deal, according to a recent statement.

There is no need for a #strike if #management agrees to reasonable #pay and #leave policies for #railroad #workers.

Ukraine’s anti-worker law comes into effect

On 17 August, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyi ratified Law 5371, which removes rights for workers at small and medium-sized companies. It will be effective for as long as the country is under martial law – a qualification added at the last minute, under pressure from trade unions.
Under the new law, people who work for firms with up to 250 employees will now be covered by contracts they negotiate as individuals with their bosses, rather than the national labour code.
In practice, this means that around 70% of workers in Ukraine have been stripped of many labour protections. Collective agreements negotiated by unions – over salary or holidays, for instance – no longer apply. The law also removes the legal authority of trade unions to veto workplace dismissals.

So now you know.

British PM wannabe Liz Truss is a disgrace!

Liz Truss has promised a further crackdown on trade unions, widening restrictions to a significant new number of industries, but her proposals were immediately criticised as the “biggest attack on civil rights” since the 19th century.

Truss said she would legislate for minimum service levels on critical national infrastructure in the first 30 days of government under her leadership. The pledge would go further than the Tories’ 2019 policy, which promised a minimum service should operate during transport strikes.

The new law proposed by Truss would potentially restrict teachers, postal workers and the energy sector. Tailored minimum thresholds, including staffing levels, would be determined with each industry.

Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT said unions would organise mass resistance if the plans went ahead, calling it “the biggest attack on trade union and civil rights since labour unions were legalised in 1871.”

“Truss is proposing to make effective trade unionism illegal in Britain and to rob working people of a key democratic right,” he said. “If these proposals become law, there will be the biggest resistance mounted by the entire trade union movement, rivalling the General Strike of 1926, the Suffragettes and Chartism.”

Automation Isn’t the Biggest #Threat to US #Factory #Jobs

source: https://www.wired.com/story/robots-automation-jobs-manufacturing-labor-germany-us/

#Manufacturing firms that hope to maintain global competitiveness will need workers with the requisite technical backgrounds who are willing to engage with new #technology, and hopefully stick around for long enough to knowledgeably contribute to factory improvements. As digital transformations across the economy automate repetitive tasks while requiring increased problem-solving, the need for better-trained and more engaged #workers is likely to be similar across other sectors. But to meet these demands of the future, we’ll need policies that help managers see their workers not as costs to be minimized and discarded, but as assets to be strengthened over time.

#GERMANY'S #GUEST #WORKERS (1984)

source: https://www.nytimes.com/1984/08/19/magazine/germany-s-guest-workers.html

He would soon be going home to Ankara, Tutkoli said, because the West Germans did not want people like him around anymore. Until recently, the #Government of Chancellor #HelmutKohl was offering foreigners without ''valid'' jobs about $3,600 per adult and $500 per child to leave the country.

...

''We were invited in by these Germans when they had a need for us,'' Tutkoli said bitterly. ''They made full use of us to build their economy, and now they want to kick us out. They are making life extremely unpleasant for us here. There are anti-Turkish marches, our women are molested, our children are abused and beaten up.

Know Your Enemy: How to Defeat Capitalism

by #MichaelALebowitz

https://socialistproject.ca/content/uploads/2022/02/know-your-enemy.pdf
https://socialistproject.ca/content/uploads/2022/02/know-your-enemy.mp3

We must put an end to #capitalism. To do that, we must know the #enemy#capital. We will never defeat that enemy if we do not understand it – its effects, its strengths and weaknesses. If, for example, we don’t know capital as our enemy, then crises within capitalism due to overaccumulation of capital or the destruction of the #environment will be viewed as crises of the “economy” or of industrialization – calling for us all to sacrifice.

Indeed, so long as #workers do not see capital as their own product and continue instead to think of the need for healthy capitalists as common sense (and as in their own interest), they will hold back from actions that place capital in crisis. Even if we are successful in struggling to gain control of the state, even if we manage to take government away from capital, we’ll continue to think of capital as necessary if we don’t understand it.

Something important happens when you struggle along with others. You win sometimes, and you learn the importance of #uniting. But it’s not only that your prospect for victory improves. Also, you change. You begin the process of shedding those sides of yourself that capital has produced. You are changing your social relations: in place of separation, there is #solidarity. You know yourself as part of a #community and you come to recognize others as part of that community too. You change in another way in the process. You develop new capacities. It’s what #Marx called “ #revolutionary-practice” – the simultaneous changing of circumstances and human activity or #self-change.
