This is a song that was born in Poland but has become a true folk song in Ukraine as well. I decided to record it as a sign of my immense gratitude to all the Polish people for their incredible support of Ukraine in this difficult time. Thank you! Together to victory!

Protest can change everything. Which is why governments around the world want to suppress it. In a week when thousands in the US expressed their fury over Roe v Wade, we look back at some of the images that helped rewrite laws and change the way we think.
Governments tend to define democracy as narrowly as possible. The story they tell goes as follows: you vote; the majority party takes office; you leave it to govern on your behalf for the next four or five years. (...)
We have seen what happens if we leave politics to governments. Fairly elected or not, they will, without effective public pressure, abuse their power. (...)
Trust in governments destroys democracy, which survives only through constant challenge. It requires endless disruption of the cosy relationship between our representatives and powerful forces: the billionaire press, plutocrats, political donors, friends in high places. What challenge and disruption mean, above all, is protest. (...)
A government that cannot tolerate protest is a government that cannot tolerate democracy.
Such governments are becoming a global norm. In the UK, two policing bills in quick succession seek to shut down all effective forms of protest. (...)
In the US, state legislatures have been undermining the federal right to protest, empowering the police to use catch-all offences such as “trespass” or “disrupting the peace” to break up demonstrations and make arrests. (...) In Russia, a new law against “discrediting the armed forces” has been used to prosecute dissenters engaging in actions as mild as writing “no to war” in the snow. Similar draconian laws are being imposed by governments in many other nations.
Why do governments want to ban protest? Because it’s effective. Why do they want us to accept their narrow vision of democracy? Because it makes our power ineffective. (...)
The extraordinary people in these images understand this – from suffragettes picketing the White House in 1917 to Patsy Stevenson being manhandled by police at last year’s Sarah Everard vigil; from relatives of those killed at Amritsar in India in 1919 to those taking to the streets after George Floyd’s murder in the US.
Almost everything of importance is disintegrating fast: ecosystems, the health system, standards in public life, equality, human rights, terms of employment. (...) Business as usual is a threat to life on Earth. Disrupting it is the greatest civic duty of all. (...)

The Kastus Kalinouski Battalion has seen active service in the Russo-Ukrainian #War and contributed to Ukraine’s victory in the Battle for #Kyiv. Belarusian troops reportedly played a particularly prominent role in fighting to the north of the Ukrainian capital around #Irpin. While most of the battalion remains based in the Kyiv region, some elements have since redeployed to the front lines in eastern Ukraine.
In addition to the Kastus Kalinouski Battalion, Belarusians are also fighting in the Pahonia unit, which was founded by Belarusian former businessman and army officer Uladzimir Prakopieu. This formation is composed of men with military backgrounds and is primarily located in the Kyiv region. There is also a Belarusian contingent within #Ukraine’s Brotherhood Battalion which includes one fighter from #Belarus whose distinctive moustache has helped make him something of a front line celebrity with popular #Instagram and #TikTok accounts covering daily life at war.

In the witchhunt for #fascism among fringe groups in #Ukraine and especially in the campaign to find #Nazis among the #Azov Regiment, commentators have overlooked the emergence of genuine state fascism in #Russia. This happened because Russian #propaganda abuses political illiteracy to justify its military intervention into Ukraine since 2014. Its goal is to plant the seeds of distrust in Ukraine as broadly as possible. It was this message that was bought all over the world when exposing Ukrainian fringe groups with no actual influence or public support. But in fact, it is Russia that embraced the main principles of fascism and incorporated them into its official #ideology.
In 77 years since the end of World #War II and the #Holocaust, matters of fascism are close enough since some survivors, perpetrators, and bystanders are still alive, but at the same time are far away enough to crystallize an amateur understanding of it as the ultimate evil with recognizable visible attributes.

The War in Ukraine Is a Colonial War
For centuries, the country has lived in the shadow of empire. But its past also provides the key to its present.

When Vladimir Putin denies the reality of the Ukrainian state, he is speaking the familiar language of empire. For five hundred years, European conquerors called the societies that they encountered “tribes,” treating them as incapable of governing themselves. As we see in the ruins of Ukrainian cities, and in the Russian practice of mass killing, rape, and deportation, the claim that a nation does not exist is the rhetorical preparation for destroying it.
Empire’s story divides subjects from objects. As the philosopher Frantz Fanon argued, colonizers see themselves as actors with purpose, and the colonized as instruments to realize the imperial vision. Putin took a pron#warounced colonial turn when returning to the Presidency a decade ago. In 2012, he described Russia as a “state-civilization,” which by its nature absorbed smaller cultures such as Ukraine’s. The next year, he claimed that Russians and Ukrainians were joined in “spiritual unity.” In a long essay on “historical unity,” published last July, he argued that Ukraine and Russia were a single country, bound by a shared origin. His vision is of a broken world that must be restored through violence. Russia becomes itself only by annihilating Ukraine.

Nearly four million refugees have fled #Ukraine since #Russia invaded. But these are hardly the only refugees fleeing war-torn countries today. Starting in 2021, the government of #Belarus has cynically used thousands of refugees displaced by wars in #Syria, #Afghanistan, #Iraq, #Ethiopia, and elsewhere as a weapon with which to exert pressure on the European Union. #EU governments have responded callously, leaving these refugees trapped in limbo between two militarized borders and establishing a restricted zone to ensure that observers could not see them dying. Despite this, anarchists organized in the #NoBordersTeam network have defied the restrictions to provide assistance to the refugees in the name of a world without borders. Wooden terrace acts as "additional room" for Polish house by UGO
A blank exterior clad in corrugated metal conceals a large terrace at this holiday home, which architecture studio UGO has created close to a lake in Wielkopolska, Poland.
The summer residence, called Terrace With a House by the Lake, was designed by Poznań studio UGO to create the feeling of being immersed in nature while having a minimal impact on its rural site.
UGO has created a Polish holiday home with a blank exterior
With an exterior informed by nearby agricultural structures, the U-shaped building encloses a 120-metre-long wooden terrace that UGO designed as an "additional room" for the home.
"The huge terrace is a place for living, resting and eating for the inhabitants of the house," explained the studio.
Corrugated metal lines parts of the exterior
"Its slightly raised platform was intended to allow the household members to commune with nature, without interfering with it," UGO continued.
"The result was not so much a house with a terrace, but a terrace with a house."
The blank exterior conceals a large terrace
Sliding doors create a seamless connection between the terrace and a central living, dining and kitchen area, which looks out in the direction of the lake through double-height glazing.
At either side of this living space are two wings containing the bedrooms. These have their own private connections to the terrace, with seating areas sheltered from the central space by deep cut-outs.
The terrace acts as additional living space for the home
Above the bedrooms are mezzanine areas, providing further sleeping spaces that open onto a roof terrace.
"The side wings additionally protect against the wind and provide full privacy for vacationing residents," said the studio.

The corrugated metal of the exterior is contrasted by Siberian larch panelling in areas where guests have the "most frequent contact", such as the entrance areas and around the courtyard.
Inside, the furniture and materials have been chosen to reflect the colours and textures of the landscape outside, with minimal finishes that retain focus on the home's large windows.

Oversized metal gutters line the edges of the house, with protruding brackets that direct rainwater to irrigate the surrounding plants.
Protruding from the roof is a distinctive cone-shaped chimney that provides ventilation for a fireplace in the living room, as well as ducting for a heat pump.

Alongside the path leading into the main home is an additional smaller building, providing storage space for two cars and a motorboat.
Other Polish houses featured on Dezeen include a lakeside cottage by HOLA Design that incorporates large windows to frame outward views and a gabled house by Kropka Studio that references local agricultural buildings.
