On diffrent planets...

How obvious spyware is not recognized as such by people who should know better.

Sometimes it becomes apparent that people around me live on a completely different planet than myself. A couple of days ago the marketing people at my $DAYJOB posted a nice happy blog post about how to use one of our products to easily integrate Google Analytics (from now on "the spyware") on a website.

When I told them that this seemed inappropriate as the spyware has been (rightfully) found to violate the GDPR and illegal by a growing number of DPA's in the EU, they didn't even know about it. And even worse they clearly don't believe me.

I'm not sure if this is pure (willful?) ignorance, or that they probably use the vendor of the spyware to find information on the web and mainly get their news via commercial spyware (aka "social media") that has the same business model. I do begin to wonder though.

Thanks to @noybeu@mastodon.social for thorough documentation of the issue, and especially the links to the original decisions by the DPA's.

So... Last night I "upgraded" my phone to Android 12. Big mistake. It claimed to have improved battery saving technology and security features. Oh no. It never drained the battery from 100 to 1 in two hours before. Hundreds of new eye candy "features" everywhere added, each with new innovative ways to send data over the network. Unremovable. No choice. This version appeared to have been designed and managed by marketing engineers. All the quiet non-connected settings I had were altered. Or removed. Animations everywhere. No longer possible to set the lockscreen background. It's gone. Now my phone looks like any other branded phone at the cell phone kiosks. Watching the power consumption, it's at least 3x with the screen turned off and locked. Lots of wakeups and network access. All my defaults, like zero "emergency alerts" were turned on again so I could hear scary Amber Alerts all day and night. I'm thinking of all the security attack vectors they've added from all these useless mandatory networking "features." This is Android 12.

This may force me to go to full Linux by the end of the year. The phone is no longer mine. It's been overtaken by unremovable features that like to chat over the network.

well, i hope i managed to promote free software and freedom respecting free software federated coms, before they closed that "free speech" window. and i hope they dont delete/demote those various posts. i wonder if it was the many times i encouraged people set up their own peertube instances... maybe they didnt like me promoting ways out of their managed overton window.

still, was nice to have that fantasy comfort for a while... to hear messages from outside the tightest overton window of the corporate "mainstream". nice to see facilitations at least one level of the matryoshka matrix up n out one more of the onion of plato's caves. :/ when already seen several more layers out yet... can be hard watching people lap up the red-vs-blue duopoly ploys that keep them divided and conquered in the conflationary over-simplifications. painful... knowing there are psychopathic cliques of eugenicists, genocidalists, anthrocidalists, ecocidalists, omnicidalists, and just plain old sadistic murderers, amond the consolidated centers of power-over which so attract the worst. #kakistarchy.

The spyware developer — officially named #DSIRF but which Microsoft tracks under the codename #KNOTWEED — made spyware known as Subzero that was used to target law firms, banks, and consultancy firms in the #UK, #Austria, and #Panama, Microsoft said. Analysis from #MSTIC found that exploits used by DSIRF to compromise systems included a zero-day privilege escalation exploit for Windows and an Adobe Reader remote code execution attack.

According to Google FairEmail is spyware because it uploads the contact list. My guess is this is because of the usage of favicons, which will use the domain name of email addresses to fetch info. This feature has been removed from the Play store version now.

I have removed all my apps from the Play store and I will stop supporting and maintaining my apps. Google won.

The commission became aware of the targeting following messages issued by #Apple to thousands of #iPhone owners in November telling them they were "targeted by state-sponsored attackers," the two EU officials said. It was the first time Apple had sent a mass alert to users that they were in #government hackers' crosshairs.

The EU itself likes to incubate surveillance plans against its own population but the #politicians of course do not want to be monitored themselves.
