The “conflict”, i.e. the armed invasion, started in southern #Ukraine when the Russian #army occupied #Crimea in February 2014. The Russian-inspired separatist #uprising in the east started later, in about a month.
It was clear to us from the beginning that Russia could not do any good in Ukraine. By 2014, a reactionary authoritarian regime had already been established in #Russia that denied all individual and social rights and brutally persecuted and destroyed all independent activity. Of course, we still have many questions about the Ukrainian state and the ruling class in Ukraine. But at least the anarchist movement, the socialist movement in Ukraine was able to operate relatively freely for some years. It suffices to say that throughout the existence of the independent Ukrainian state, there has not been a single political anarchist prisoner here. At the same time, many dozens of our comrades in Russia ended up in Russian prisons – guilty solely for their anarchist convictions. So, we were well aware of what #Putin did for libertarian ideas.
The #RKAS reaction was therefore irreversible: it was necessary to resist the Russian attack by all means.

#Russia’s post-2014 aggressions against #Ukraine have now unequivocally pushed the dial. Calls for its breakup, and the self-determination of its 83 internationally recognised federal subjects and over 190 ethnic groups have also become more vocal of late.

We would call our acquaintances and relatives in #Russia to explain the horrors of this #war. Hoping to arouse their sympathy. We thought that when the Russians saw all the atrocities, they would definitely condemn this lawlessness.
Instead, we saw en masse the absence of any #compassion.
Not to a 1-year-old boy from the city of #Izium, who was raped by two Russian soldiers simultaneously and died. Not to a 16-year-old girl from #Irpin, whose nails were torn off by Russians, then she was raped and shot in the head.
The majority of Russians have not condemned all these #warcrimes. They begin to show #pride and approval.

In early March, insiders told Meduza that President Putin’s decision to go to war horrified most #Kremlin and ministerial officials, who feared that Western #sanctions would ruin their careers and maybe even their lives. Shortly thereafter, however, a “patriotic surge” took hold. By April, several prominent figures were calling publicly to fight “to the bitter end.”
Now, three months into the #war, pessimism is staging a comeback. “It won’t be possible to live like before. Any talk of development is out the window. But life goes on. There are gray imports. There’s trade with #China and #India,” said a source close to the prime minister’s cabinet.
At the same time, officials in the Kremlin still see no realistic scenario in which President #Putin could end the hostilities in Ukraine and retain his high approval rating in Russia. In late March, scores of contract soldiers from #SouthOssetia refused to fight in #Ukraine and left for their homes. According to our source, all of the objectors’ contracts had been voided shortly after. Still, almost a hundred soldiers returned, and some of them will be sent back to the #war zone. Some twenty contract soldiers challenged their dismissals in court. After the return to the self-declared republic, the soldiers had a meeting with South #Ossetia's President Anatoly Bibilov. They described insufferable conditions, broken equipment, and the absence of higher-ups at the front lines.
