Big Pharma ~ Time to End Their Greed

https://www.dailyposter.com/follow-the-pharma-money/

#BernieSanders: "The #pharmaceutical #industry has spent more than $4.5 billion on #lobbying and #campaign #contributions over the past 20 years. That's why we pay the #highest #prices on #earth for #prescription #drugs. #Enough-is-enough. Democrats must have the courage to defeat their #greed. The #business #model of the pharmaceutical industry is #fraud. Their greed is literally #killing #Americans. It is absurd that we have people in this country who every day must choose between being able to afford the #medicines they need to stay alive and being able to afford their groceries. It is no exaggeration to say the greed of the pharmaceutical industry is killing people. They have spent billions buying #politicians & several of their #executives became #billionaires during the #pandemic. Their days of calling the shots in #DC must come to an end."

"For years, the story has gone like this: the pharmaceutical industry spends billions lobbying #Congress to do nothing to #lower prescription drug prices, they get their way. 97% of #Democrats, 80% of #Independents and 61% of #Republicans want #Medicare to negotiate with the #pharma #companies to lower prescription drug prices. Our opponents are not only dead wrong on this #policy, they are also way out of touch with what the American people are demanding. Let me ask you a question. Are you satisfied with a #system that allows the pharmaceutical industry to charge you $98 for the same vial of #insulin that the #Canadian people get for about $12? Maybe I am a little bit of a radical, but I happen to think that in the richest country on the face of the #planet, people should not have to be cutting their pills in half or rationing their insulin." Time to end their greed.

Famed Photographer David Bailey Reveals He Has Vascular Dementia

image

Legendary fashion and portrait photographer David Bailey has revealed that he was diagnosed with vascular dementia three years ago. Sufferers live an average of five years after symptoms are identified.

Born in 1938, the 83-year old Londoner is widely acknowledged as one of the founding fathers of contemporary photography, according to art book publisher Taschen. Bailey has created iconic photographs of celebrities, while his early work intimately captured 1960s London.

His photography also kickstarted a new generation of models, like Jean Shrimpton -- considered one of the world's first supermodels -- and Penelope Tree, an English model who became widely known during the swinging sixties in London.

Bailey's work spans across six decades and he doesn't plan on stopping yet, even though he is in his early eighties and has recently been diagnosed with vascular dementia as reported by The Times. This life-debilitating illness -- which is a type of dementia that is caused by reduced blood flow to the brain -- cannot be cured or stopped, it can only be slowed down with lifestyle changes.

According to the British Heart Foundation, vascular dementia sufferers live on average five years after symptoms are identified. It can cause issues such as forgetfulness, trouble concentrating or planning, hallucinations or delusions, and may cause sufferers to get lost in familiar surroundings among other issues.

"It’s a f***ing bore but it’s just one of those things. In some ways it’s good: I can see a film and forget it, then enjoy it again two years later. And it doesn’t seem to affect my work at all," explains Bailey.

The diagnosis, which was made about three years ago, hasn't changed Bailey's desire to live his life to its fullest or his dedication to the art and photography world. He is just as busy as ever -- he is working on a documentary based on his retrospective Taschen book "Sumo," and three new books with Steidl. These include a volume of Eighties fashion, another one dedicated to the East End area of London, and a sequel to his "Box of Pin-Ups" from 1965, which included 36 portraits of fashionable celebrities of the time.

Although largely involved with fashion elites and different celebrities throughout his career, Bailey has taken part in other projects that also included general members of the public. One such campaign was launched in 2012 when Samsung announced it will give away its new NX1000 mirrorless cameras to anyone named David Bailey in the United Kingdom. The campaign concluded with 142 David Baileys brought together in London for a special event where the "real" David Bailey made an appearance and joined in on a group photo.

Covid surge in Vietnam hits global supply chains

Manufacturers for Nike and Adidas forced to close factories as infections rise

A record surge of Covid-19 infections has forced factories to shut in southern Vietnam, hitting one of the world’s busiest manufacturing centres for clothing and footwear and sending global brands looking for back-up suppliers. The supply chain disruption is a blow to a country that had largely tamed local transmissions of the virus in 2020.

Vietnam was one of few Asian economies that grew and attracted new foreign investment last year despite the pandemic. Vietnam’s daily new cases have been trending between 7,000 and 8,000 and nearly all of the country’s more than 200,000 infections have been recorded since the beginning of July. Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s largest city, has been hit hardest. It imposed strict social-distancing measures on July 9, including rules on worker transport and housing, and the deployment of staff on factory floors. Two big footwear suppliers — Taiwan’s Pou Chen, which makes shoes for Adidas and Nike, and South Korea’s Changshin, which also supplies the US company — suspended operations last month.

Pou Chen stopped production at a Ho Chi Minh City factory, its largest in the country, on July 14, and said the plant would remain closed until at least August 9. The company’s other Vietnamese plants were forced to scale down operations. “Local government requirements have affected workers’ ability to come to work, and that has led to a drop in capacity utilisation,” the company said. Pou Chen shipped 244m pairs of shoes last year, 44 per cent of which came from Vietnam. Adidas warned last week that supply chain constraints could cost it as much as €500m in sales by the end of the year.

Feng Tay, another Taiwanese sports footwear manufacturer, closed several of its factories last month. The company makes shoes accounting for one-sixth of Nike’s annual sales, according to its website. The Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association said recently that more than 30 cent of the country’s garment and textile factories were closed. A report in state-run Vietnam News quoted the chair of the association as saying the vaccination rate among workers in the industry was “still very low”. Vietnam has been hampered by a stuttering vaccine programme after the government was slow to procure jabs.

Only about 1 per cent of the country’s roughly 98m population has been fully vaccinated. Coronavirus cases have been reported across Vietnam and disrupted other sectors, including electronics. “With all provinces in Vietnam being hit by Covid, the situation is so unprecedentedly uncertain that buyers have to adopt a Plan B or C, including offshoring production to another country,” said Vu Ngoc Khiem of Global Sources, an ecommerce platform that links Asian suppliers with overseas buyers.

Samsung, one of Vietnam’s biggest employers, has suffered disruptions to its smartphone manufacturing over recent months after a critical supplier of injection moulding equipment stopped operations. The issue has been resolved but the tech group’s appliance factories near Ho Chi Minh City are running at about half capacity.

Operations are expected to “normalise” this month, the company said. Eurasia Group, the consultancy, said in a research note last week that there were concerns the outbreak in Vietnam “could harm production ahead of peak end-year/holiday season demand”. However, health officials have said in recent days that Covid cases in Ho Chi Minh City were “plateauing”, in a possible indication that the worst of the current wave of infections had passed.

Vietnam has lured new investments and supply contracts from global electronics, apparel and other companies seeking to diversify their operations away from China, Asia’s premier manufacturing centre, at a time of worsening Sino-US trade tensions.

As Vietnam’s coronavirus surge continues, lockdowns take their toll on factory output, small businesses

Vietnam’s Covid-19 hotspot Ho Chi Minh City has twice extended its lockdown, hitting manufacturers trying to export items such as clothing. An economist said the fourth wave is more devastating for labour migrants, informal workers and those in service industries who cannot work from home

University student Tran Thanh Nha has been working 14-hour shifts almost every day for the past two months, delivering food to locked-down residents and assisting medical workers in conducting Covid-19 tests in Vietnam’s southern commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City.

Dressed in a protective suit in the sweltering summer heat, volunteers like her constantly sanitise themselves as they help take up to 250 nasal samples a day. She fears they too may get infected with the Covid-19 Delta variant that has upended Vietnam’s earlier success at managing the coronavirus.

“This time around the situation is very serious,” 22-year-old Nha said. “Everyone is trying so that the outbreak in Saigon could soon come to an end.”

Ho Chi Minh City has emerged as Vietnam’s virus hotspot as the country battles a steep rise in cases – from less than 3,000 infections on April 27 to 114,260 as of Tuesday. By comparison, neighbouring China, where the virus was first detected, has reported 92,065 cases.

The city has twice extended a lockdown that until August 1 only allows residents to leave home for necessities such as food or to go to work at businesses that have been granted permission to remain open. A curfew has also been imposed with people forbidden to leave home between 6pm and 6am. At least one-third of Vietnam’s 63 localities have imposed restrictions on movements.

Residents have also faced unprecedented police checkpoints set up to monitor and curb their movements as the government ramps up testing. The authorities are also trying to relieve pressure on the overwhelmed hospital system by running a pilot programme that allows asymptomatic patients who have tested negative at least twice and have a low viral load to quarantine and be monitored at home instead of in a state-sanctioned facility. The pilot also includes close contacts of identified cases.

While Vietnam’s caseload and 524 fatalities are below those of its Southeast Asian neighbours, Covid-19 has weighed heavily on its manufacturing and export-dependent economy, with factories that churn out products for global giants reporting work suspensions because of movement restrictions.

Factory output

In response, the government has allowed factories in industrial zones to continue operating if they can provide on-site accommodation or transport to ensure employees go straight home after work. Those that cannot fulfil the conditions – including companies in the labour-intensive garment industry – have to temporarily close.

Such shutdowns come as assembly lines gear up for the busy holiday shopping season in the US and Europe. Michael Laskau, founder of Ho Chi Minh City-based Paradigm Shift, which works as an intermediary between manufacturers and overseas customers, told Bloomberg that such delays could mean shoes, suits, sweatshirts and other clothes will not be on department store racks by Thanksgiving Day in November.

An employee of a food exporting company which has factories in southern Vietnam said responding to the government’s requirements has been challenging, such as ensuring sufficient toilet and shower facilities and food supplies for employees who are willing to stay in.

“We are a food factory so they cannot sleep in production areas like say an electronics manufacturer. We need to continue to adhere to all food safety standards,” said the employee, who declined to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media.

‘’We have been stretched, [our] capacity is down to 60 per cent but it hasn’t reached breaking point,” he said.

400 businesses close each day

In the first six months of 2021, 70,209 businesses shut down – a 24.9 per cent increase year on year, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment. This equates to about 400 businesses closing each day. Most of these enterprises were small-scale, less than five years old and in the commercial and services industries which “were continuously affected by recent [Covid-19] outbreaks”, a ministry report published earlier this month said.

In comparison, more than 67,000 new businesses were registered, up 8.1 per cent in the same period, mostly in the manufacturing, car and motorbike retail and repair, and construction fields.

Almost 1.2 million people of working age lost their jobs in the second quarter, the same period the fourth wave hit Vietnam, with those between the ages of 15 and 24 comprising one-third of this group, potentially affecting their long-term employment prospects.

The government needs to hand cash directly and regularly to these affected groups : Economist Phung Duc Tung

Dr Phung Duc Tung, an economist and the director of Vietnam’s Mekong Development Research Institute, said the impact of the fourth wave was “tremendously more significant” than that of previous waves, with the most vulnerable including labour migrants, informal workers and those in service industries who could not work from home, such as delivery drivers.

“They are the most impacted in terms of livelihood and they don’t have an alternative one,” he said.

“The government needs to hand cash directly and regularly to these affected groups, while also providing more financial support for the health care workforce.”

There have been numerous concerns about job losses, suspensions and uncertainty among many Vietnamese, said Ngo Bao Linh, a coordinator at Ngay Mai hotline, a Hanoi-based non-profit initiative offering help for callers dealing with mental health issues.

“These accounts have an effect on couples’ relationships because of the impact on family finances, tension between family members when they have to interact with each other more [under lockdown], generational conflicts, and so on,” she said.

Vaccine roll-out

Vietnam, which has heavily relied on the AstraZeneca vaccine, is trying to accelerate its slow vaccination roll-out. Only around 0.3 per cent of the 97 million population has been fully vaccinated, the second-lowest rate in Southeast Asia.

The government has announced a list of priority groups, although there have been scandals about some beneficiaries. For instance, local media reported over the weekend that Vingroup, Vietnam’s largest conglomerate, managed to secure 5,000 Moderna doses for its staff, as part of the US government’s recent donation to Vietnam. This caused a fierce debate among netizens about the fairness of the vaccine roll-out programme and opaque definitions of priority groups.

Vietnam has so far received more than 10.7 million vaccine doses, according to data from the health ministry, and is expecting millions more through the international Covax Facility and commercial contracts. It is also in talks with different foreign manufacturers to produce their vaccines locally, and has so far produced a test batch of Russia’s Sputnik V.

One of the reasons the country’s inoculation rate is so low is because “Vietnam was waiting to see how the [foreign] vaccines work”, said Bich Tran, adjunct fellow at the Washington-based Centre for Strategic and International Studies’ Southeast Asia Programme. This bumped its orders far back in the queue when it finally placed them, she added.

“But one bright spot is Vietnam’s foreign policy,” she said, referring to the country’s donations of masks and equipment to other countries at the beginning of the pandemic. “In return, when it is too late for Vietnam to secure vaccine deals by itself, several countries, including the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany, have either provided Vietnam with millions of Covid-19 vaccine doses or promised to do so.”

Nha, the frontline volunteer, has received one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The migrant from the coastal province of Ninh Thuan, where movement restrictions are also in place, said her parents at first threatened to disown her when they learned of her intention to volunteer on the Covid-19 front lines in Ho Chi Minh City, fearing for her safety. But they later came around.

“I will come home when the outbreak is over,’’ she said.

FTC Approves ‘Right To Repair’ Policy in Huge Win for the Movement

image

In a colossal win for the Right to Repair movement, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has published a statement where it unanimously approved the prioritization of aggressive action against manufacturers who impose unfair repair restrictions on individuals and independent repair shops.

The statement follows an executive order from President Joe Biden that asked the FTC to review new regulations that would empower customers. For those unfamiliar, the short video below explains the concept of Right to Repair in less than 60 seconds.

As noted in previous coverage, the Right to Repair movement has been championed by tech advocates, many media groups, and outlets like iFixit. In particular, iFixit has been one of the loudest voices in the movement and believes that everyone who owns a product has the right to repair it. The movement does not just encompass the right to repair owned products but expands to preventing companies from making access to equipment or resources proprietary. iFixit notes that the automobile industry tried to block the independent repair of vehicles, but that motion failed in 2012. Similarly, the idea of a “locked” cell phone to a particular carrier was overturned and made legal in 2018.

The FTC's statement today notes that the government agency agrees with tech advocates and repair houses and says that the idea of restricting customers and businesses from choosing how they repair products can substantially increase the total cost of repairs, generate harmful electronic waste, and unnecessarily increase wait times for repairs.

"In contrast, providing more choice in repairs can lead to lower costs, reduce e-waste by extending the useful lifespan of products, enable more timely repairs, and provide economic opportunities for entrepreneurs and local businesses," the FTC writes.

One of the major ways that manufacturers like Apple prevent independent repair of devices is by restricting access to the parts necessary to make those repairs. The FTC specifically has called out this action as one that it finds disagreeable.

"The Commission uncovered evidence that manufacturers and sellers may, without reasonable justification, be restricting competition for repair services in numerous ways including: …asserting patent rights and enforcement of trademarks in an unlawful, overbroad manner; disparaging non-OEM parts and independent repair; using unjustified software locks, digital rights management, and technical protection measures; and imposing restrictive end user license agreements."

In a blog post summarizing the announcement, iFixit writes that the FTC's statement should send a clear signal that the tide has turned against anti-repair manufacturers. Despite the considerable lobbying force of these billion-dollar corporations, the FTC has found the actions to be in violation of its policies.

"If manufacturers continue to restrict independent repair, they could find themselves on the wrong end of an FTC enforcement action, and on the hook for sizable penalties," iFixit writes.

iFixit plans to continue to urge the FTC to take more action against anti-repair manufacturers and create new rules that prohibit unfair and deceptive repair restrictions that it says hurt device owners and stifle competition in the repair market.

The FTC admits that in the past, focusing on unlawful repair restrictions has not been a priority for them, but that changes today.

"The Commission has determined that it will devote more enforcement resources to combat these practices. Accordingly, the Commission will now prioritize investigations into unlawful repair restrictions under relevant statutes such as the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and Section of the Federal Trade Commission Act."

#Attention this is about #Facebook: The #Hacker Way vs Forced Happinesses

To really drive the point home, let’s consider an example entirely outside the realm of engineering: happiness. We all know that we smile because we are happy. That is a causal relationship. What is surprising is that if we #force ourselves to smile we can actually improve our mood. Smiling more makes you happier whether or not the smile was natural. The #brain is a complex system which apparently struggles with causality and we can take advantage of that to achieve a better result for ourselves. It is cheating. It shouldn’t work. But it does. Hacking can literally make you happier.

So they hacked themself - no shit Sherlock :( First of all, this really works. I use this trick when I'm totally bummed and don't want anyone to know. But how inhumanly broken must the exploitation machinery in commercial software development be, if this is part of the standard for the staff. Please promise me that you will immediately run away if your project management ever asks you to do something like that.

How One Man Used Photography to Give Back to His Navajo Community

image

Photographer Mylo Fowler was raised in a small home on the Navajo Reservation of Northern Arizona. In the latest film from director Chris Burkard, Fowler describes his upbringing as "growing up in a 600 square foot home with a 30 square mile backyard."

That backyard was what Fowler and his family valued. The "pile of red dirt" is what they relied on for food, warmth, and security. Fowler spent his childhood learning how to track rabbits and bonding with his horses, of which he had three of before pre-school.

As a child, Fowler did not know what he wanted to be when he reached adulthood. But whatever it was, he never envisioned it would take him away from the home and the land that he loved. That would all change, however, when a spiritual leader in Fowler's life told him that the greatest impact he would have in his community would happen after he moved off of the Navajo Reservation.

While he didn't know what to make of the spiritual leader's words, after a long period of thought, Fowler left the reservation and began his photography journey. He quickly realized he wasn't using his newfound photography skills in a way that lived up to the advice the spiritual leader had given him.

That all changed on August 5, 2015. The most valuable water sources in the Navajo Nation became toxic after the Environmental Protection Agency accidentally spilled three million gallons of mine wastewater into the San Juan and Colorado Rivers. The disaster had dire consequences on many communities, especially the Navajo Nation.

Fowler immediately had the idea to start selling prints of his photography for low prices, with all proceeds being used to buy drinking water for Navajo families. When all was said and done, Fowler had delivered seven semi-trailers filled with water for those in need. This experience changed the young photographer's perspective on what was important to him and what he wanted to use his photography skills for. It also proved that the spiritual leader's vision was correct after all when he said that Fowler's biggest impact on his community would come once he left.

"I think the film and Mylo’s story goes to show that photography can be used as a tool for good," Burkard tells PetaPixel. "I have struggled with the meaning of photography over the years as I have worked on commercial shoots. Sometimes, it feels like the meaning just isn’t there and Mylo’s path shows how someone can use their photography in a meaningful way. It also shows that you don’t necessarily need to do anything huge or life-altering. Just the simple act of selling some of his prints had such a profound effect on Mylo’s community and little things like this are something everyone with a camera is capable of doing."

"It was such an honor to tell Mylo’s story," Burkard describes to PetaPixel what attracted him to Fowler and his work. "I found his work many years ago online and immediately knew we had to work together at some point. His deeply personal storytelling and imagery of the Southwest grabbed my attention from the start. I’ve always loved the Southwest, traveling and shooting there often. I think it’s one of the most beautiful parts of our country with such a unique and important history. I’ve wanted to create a piece about the Southwest and the culture behind it for a long time and I felt like Mylo’s story was the best way to do this."

Being one of the world's most recognizable travel and adventure photographers, Burkard has had his work published in seemingly every publication across the globe, including National Geographic. In recent years, however, Burkard has begun to focus on directing short films that tell meaningful stories of adventure, friendship, and community. His film Under an Arctic Sky was a big hit on Netflix and the success has inspired Burkard to continue to tell his stories through motion pictures.

"I think moving towards short films has just been a natural progression in my career," Burkard says. "For me, it has always been about telling stories, regardless of the medium. After many years of shooting photos I began to realize that you could tell deeper and more intimate stories through short films and since then have continued to work on them. Both are powerful mediums and I think you can tell good stories through either one, but I think with short films you just can go a little bit deeper and create a more cohesive storyline that isn't possible through still photographs."

For those who wish to follow in Burkard's footsteps by incorporating motion pictures into their visual story-telling, he shares some knowledge that he has learned throughout his journey.

"My biggest piece of advice is just to find a story worth telling. That’s really what it’s all about. I wouldn’t stress over the camera gear or the editing or anything like that until you have nailed down a story that’s worth telling and have decided how you want to tell it. Good-looking visuals are nice, but the root of any good film is the story. Focus on telling an interesting story, and the rest will come with it."

With MYLO, Burkard continues his tradition of creating engaging stories that his fans love. Whether it's with his photos or his films, Burkard shows that the world is full of beauty and interesting stories, as long as you make an effort to find them.
