A quotation by Gilligan, James

In short, the contradiction in the old defense of class stratification is that it defends leisure for the leisure class, but not for the underclass. With reference to the underclass, leisure is said to destroy the incentive to work, leads to slothfulness and self-indulgence, and retards cognitive and moral development. When applied to the leisure class, the concept evokes an image of Plato and Aristotle, whose leisure was based on slave labor, creating the intellectual foundations of Western civilization; or patrician slave-owners like Washington and Jefferson laying the foundations of American civilization; or creative aristocrats like Count Leo Tolstoy or Bertrand, Earl Russell; or, even closer to home, of our own sons and daughters (or of ourselves, when we were young adults) being freed from the stultifying tasks of earning a living until well into our adult years so that we could study in expensive universities to gain specialized knowledge and skills.

James Gilligan (b. c. 1936) American psychiatrist and author

Vivek Chibber’s The Class Matrix should give the #Left real confidence in class #analysis and class #politics. Over the span of a brief number of pages, it confronts the driving developments within social #science over the past half-century while also seeking to resuscitate the theories outlined in classical #Marxism with crucial modifications. It does all of this with a precision and thoughtfulness that all serious social analysis should aspire to.
Chibber’s interventions center around three points. First, a defense of a materialist conception of #class structure against a host of critics both within and outside the Marxist tradition; second, a reconceptualization of the process of class formation based on the internally generated macro-dynamics of the capitalist class structure; and finally, the conceptual demotion of hegemony—the #NewLeft’s favorite plaything—below the far more prevalent phenomena of resignation in explaining the stability of #capitalism.
These contributions provide the essential theoretical foundation from which any meaningful progressive politics must proceed. It’s for this reason that The Class Matrix’s placement within the arena of academic debate feels inappropriate, maybe even wasted on individuals with institutional incentives to disregard it. The book’s academic placement makes some sense given the Left’s persistent relegation to #academia—although this is a proportionally diminishing share of the #Left as a whole. It’s unfortunate then that the location of the Left within the middle class receives painfully little treatment by Chibber. In a moment when the ramifications of this are increasingly relevant and debate has been rekindled around terms like “the PMC,” this seems to be a missed opportunity in an otherwise critical #book for the Left.

Every time I go out there is a new #thing. It's a fucking #conspiracy!

I am not joking. What is happening in the #USA right now is the biggest fucking conspiracy in the history of the country. The #wealth #class is colluding with itself to form #anticompetitive #megacartels in an effort to build the #new #feudalism. And they are succeeding. Where are all the conspiracy "theorists" when you need them. Do we even need them. The fucking CEOs (we need to drag a few out into the street, string them up by their feet and slit their fucking throats from ear to ear, and shoot anyone who tries to approach their rotting corpses) talk openly about what they are doing with a giddiness that is unparalleled. I don't know why they waited until #Trump was out of office to kick off the completely fucking illegal anti-competitive, anti-"free"-market, cartel price-fixing bullshit. But they did. And they are acting like the #Twitler himself, talking openly about the crimes against everyone they are committing.

Anyway, it's death by a thousand cuts. Every time I go out, the price on something or other has gone up by 50% or 100% (they give "inflation" as an excuse). And they are all doing the thing where they complain about not being able to hire people, while simultaneously bragging about low unemployment, and forcing people to work 12 hour days for 10 weeks in a row. All of the #paradoxes are mind-boggling. None of these CEO assholes have any fucking idea what they are doing. They just go in, raise the prices, hire consultants to exploit the workforce, pump up the stock price with a never-ending fount of TEDtalk bullshit, and cash out before it all collapses and take their winnings and go… where?

The USA used to be the place that corrupt Third World sociopaths went to when they hollowed out their shithole countries. Now we are just a series of shitholes with nukes and interstates between them. It's insane. It just keeps getting worse and worse. It's like the tail end of the Bush Administration all over again. And we know exactly who is doing it and why. And they are just laughing. NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNTIL WE FUCKING KILL SOME OF THEM.

AOC & Noam Chomsky: The Way Forward

*In this historic, inter-generational meeting of minds, Laura Flanders brings together New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and MIT professor emeritus Noam Chomsky—for the first time ever—to discuss the way forward for people, politics, and the planet. From labor strikes to racial uprisings to climate action to the Great Resignation, they reflect on the renewed power of collective organizing and the changing tide in economic thinking and electoral politics. Their insights demand that we think differently about everything from our nation’s history and its place in the world, to who can run for office in America and win. In their first face-to-face conversation, the mutual admiration is palpable. Laura closes with some thoughts on thinking the unthinkable. *

“We’re now having one of the major strikes in American history when workers are simply saying, ‘We're not gonna go back to the rotten, oppressive jobs, or precarious circumstances, with no health[care].’ The one-sided class war of the last 40 years is becoming two-sided…” —Noam Chomsky

“There are already communities actively experimenting and developing solutions… What I work on is not how we find solutions but how we scale [them] to transform our society.” —AOC

#The Pandemic Response as Contemporary Imperialism

left

Source: https://www.wrongkindofgreen.org/2021/08/22/the-pandemic-response-as-contemporary-imperialism/

The almost uniform support for #totalitarian lock-down measures and mandates from those on the #left has been shocking to see and has resulted in a feeling of political homelessness for those whose leftist values are what lead them to view the response to the #pandemic with a sharp critical eye. This article shows that the reason why so many on the left have abandoned the values of freedom of speech and movement, bodily autonomy, and economic justice is because those people belong to the #ideology of #progressivism, which exists outside the left-right dichotomy.

#Progressivism is an ideology that champions limitless growth, unbridled use of #technology and the control of nature over any intrinsic sense of worth or fulfillment. We all get dragged along on the march of ‘progress’ because progressives assume any deviance from their values is inferior and because they tend to control the world’s resources. #Progress under this model is linear; the future is always an improvement on the past, and any attempt to resist change or divert course is seen as regressive and #unscientific.

Progressives often engage in leftist rhetoric, but their proposals always result in strengthening and expanding the existing, inequitable system and further entrenching the current, elite #class.

Progressivism is the direct descendant of the #imperialism that dominated much of Western history for centuries

Progressivism = imperialism

Imperialism is the practice of one group of people forcibly subjecting other groups of people to its authority and control for its own benefit, though the imperialists often rationalize their actions as an attempt to save or improve its victims.

Progressives show no qualms about manipulating people or depriving them of #freedom or livelihood to coerce them into compliance because they have no respect for personal agency, seeing other humans as just another #resource to be mined.

Progressives view humans as separate from the natural environment, treating nature as something merely to be tamed and conquered.

Progressives are obsessed with using data, technocracy, and standardization to create a false veneer of objectivity that they use to reinforce the belief in the supremacy of their ideas and to discount the viewpoints that are discordant with progressive ideology, often disdaining opposition as unscientific and false.

Imperialists’ belief that they have ownership of truth fuels their belief in their own supremacy in a circular manner. They believe they are better and smarter than everyone else and therefore that their beliefs are also superior.

Like the imperialists before them, progressives’ belief in their own superiority is what is used to justify forcing their will on everyone else. They see no problem with censoring criticism, depriving individuals of freedom, and forcing lifestyle choices on others.

Domestic imperialism today

One can recognize progressive imperialists because they are the ones who think their own beliefs are facts and those of the opposition are misinformation to be censored.

They are the ones who believe they are morally justified in forcing other autonomous humans to bend to their will.

The phrase ‘vaccine hesitancy’ is characteristic of progressive imperialism today. The term is a propagandistic tool to pathologize non-compliance with an imperialist vision. Notably, the term implies that there can be no choice on the matter, that it is only a matter of time until everyone gets the vaccine.
The entire discussion has been framed in starkly imperialist terms—asking how the state can overcome people’s objections and force compliance—rather than in the liberal terms of personal sovereignty and pluralism (acknowledging that different viewpoints are equally valid and that the decision should be based on personal choice).

The assumption of infallibility and the feeling of entitlement to play God with someone else’s health is pure #colonization of other human beings. The tendency to assume that someone else’s personal choices about his or her own life should be subordinate to your beliefs is the essence of imperialism. It is an expectation that one can and should dominate others. Such a person is carrying on the storied legacy of the numerous imperialists before them.
Every generation has them, and these people are this era’s imperialist oppressors, though of course, like all imperialists, they see themselves as heroes.

This is particularly salient when you consider the racial dynamics at play with regard to ‘vaccine hesitancy,’ with reluctance to take the vaccine being higher among blacks and other people of color.

The means that they are employing to entice these communities to comply—using everything from free fast food to hip hop videos—suggests that progressives do not think people of color are capable of having intellectual and philosophical rationales behind their decisions to opt-out.

Once again, we see the privileged white upper class acting as #missionaries to spread their beliefs as absolute truth to classes of people they deem inferior to themselves, the modern-day savages whom they must tame, control, and manipulate in service of their supposedly objective worldview.

That is why, despite claiming that their desires for #vaccine mandates are about saving lives, progressives express little concern for the lives of those people who died after getting these novel technological interventions. Those people died in service of progressive goals so their deaths do not matter. To a progressive imperialist, every such death is a righteous one because humans are just another tool to fulfill progressive ends.

We are no longer permitted to live as human beings have lived for millennia because progressives have decided that such ways of life are outdated and wrong. We cannot opt out of new technologies.

Progressives will not allow any other #philosophy of living but their own.
